Need Dentist that Accepts Insurance and Uses Sedation
« on: July 19, 2010, 09:01:35 pm »
Okay - here is the question, does anyone know of a dentist in Miami-Dade County area that accepts HIV + patients and uses IV sedation?  I have private dental insurance thru my employer (MetLife/Safeguard).  Thanks!

Just talked to a friend of mine who is an HIV Case Manager and he gave me one to call tomorrow, but I  asked him if they can refuse and he said "yep."  While you can try to take legal action, most lawyers won't accept it because the courts down here will still side with the dentist.... can't believe it.  But this is where the whole Kimberly Bergalis thing happened 25 years ago...

There is a very good oral surgeon on Dixie Highway in Aventura I went to, and there is also a good dental office located on Hallandale Beach Blvd just before Federal Highway, you might want to give them a try.

I didn't think they could refuse to treat an HIVer either.  That kind of policy would make people not want to tell their dentist.  What if you needed surgery for something, can they deny to treat you?  If you were in a car wreck, could docs refuse to treat you?

I still don't believe they are actually "allowed" to --- it is just that they aren't going to get into any trouble for refusing to.... no enforcement and courts won't typically side with us --- at least according to the people I have  talked to --- and all of their health questionnaires when you go to register ask if you are HIV +.   I wouldn't think that would matter if they are using universal precautions.

Georgie's is about as edgy as Uncle Charlie's in Manhattan was, which mean it's not at all.  Let me know if you need the addy for the secret Haitian bath house in Hialeah.

Unfortunately I don't.  What I can tell you is this: the dentist office is located on the south side of Hallandale Beach Blvd in between 1-95 and Federal Highway, but closer to Federal Highway;  the oral surgeon, who I highly recommend, is located on the west side of the RR tracks on West Dixie Highway about a 1/4- 1/2 mile north of Ives Dairy Rd..

I'm going to look into it further and if I find anything I'll send you a PM.

When I get back to Miami I'll look for the phone number and address of my dentist (he is in the Gables).  He is the finest gay male you could have working on your teefs.  It makes it a real pleasure to open your mouth for him, and he has no qualms about treating us outcasts with the pooper flu.

You'll have to call and ask about the whole IV thang.  Oh, and don't be making cute eyes at him if he agrees to see you (or I will cut ya, ho).

This is from the ADA's website itself and it seems pretty much to the letter what you're describing, you can split some of the proceeds from owning these dentist's asses with me.

I agree Trey; however, the part that is difficult to prove and that was put into that example is "all".  How do you prove that the dentist categorically refuses to treat all persons with HIV/AIDS?  Unless you can gather enough people together who have tried to get the services -- I'm not saying its unwinnable, but most lawyers know the challenge associated with proving class discrimination - I will still do some checking this way, but I just want to get my dayummm tooth taken care of   :)

Saw the dentist today -- took the x-rays and gave me a referral to an Oral Surgeon.  Also gave me a scipt for Darvocet and Clindamycin (antibiotic).  He was concerned about my lymp nodes under my chin being so swollen and tender.  So, on his advice, called me ID doc and have an appointment to see her on Monday -- I'm thinking its just the tooth infection causing the swelling.

I see the Oral Surgeon on Friday for a consult --- they like to do that before they do the IV sedation - my preferred method of getting a tooth extraction--- which will probably occur next week after the antibiotic has had a chance to do its job.

Thanks everyone for your assistance.  I actually ended up seeing the dentist that is my assigned dentist thru my insurance -- he was cool with the HIV thing - it was just a hike getting to his office (about 30 miles from my house - way down south -- I should have paid a visit down to Key Largo, I was so far down south)...

Make sure you take those antibiotics.  I learned the hard way several years ago when I had to get a molar removed and the infection from it damn near killed me.

Ahhh Key Largo, last time I was down there was in 92 raping the waters of live rock and coral.  I know, not cool, but we made some good money doing it.

I love Key Largo - Islemorada and K. West.  --- each one offers something different depending on a person's mood.

Yeah - I will definitely take the antibiotics - I had a friend a few months back who ended up in the ER and then admitted because the infection from an abscessed tooth had started traveling throughout his body - towards his brain.

God knows I can't afford any type of issues with my brain - I already have a hard enough time deciphering things like MILF, phyllo dough, etc.

Still taking the antibiotic and the "baby aspirin (Darvocet)" - which does absolutely nothing for me.  I should be able to get a few endocets tomorrow - those work much better on me.

Get the tooth extracted on Wednesday at 11:15 - IV sedation style -- got the ride lined up, etc.

See the ID doc tomorrow to make sure everything is cool - lymph nodes are still swollen.  Oral surgeon said that shouldn't be swollen on both sides the way they are... so, we will see what is up....

Hey Phil,

If you are interested in talking to an attorney over some of the dental service providers who refused service  www.findlaw.com  You can chose by state, city and practice area and most attorneys will do the first telephone consultation at no cost.   ;D  Have the best day
Michael

Why would you need an IV sedation? You having wisdom teeth removed?

It's pretty far in the back (a molar  #18, I think) and I'm a chicken shit  ;D

Every attorney listed on Findlaw pays a fee to be listed on that site and with over 150 directories which offers attorney referral, I think they are the best.  The attorneys who originally built Findlaw, have another site  www.justia.com which is also very good as they are associated with Cornel School of Law and of course everyone likes and respects www.nolo.com   ;D  Have the best day

Just back from the dentist - tooth successfully pulled ---
Only bad thing is the dentist gave me Motrin for the pain -
So now I am on the hunt for some little stronger pain reliever -
I have a big food tasting event to go tomorrow that I paid $80 for a ticket for and need to make sure that I am not in any discomfort -

Other than that everything went cool...

That must be a relief.   The Motrin should do you fine, quit being a junkie.   ;)
