First numbers - doctors intrigued
« on: April 30, 2008, 05:25:54 pm »
Hi all,

I was diagnosed 1 week ago today.  I tested negative in January.  However, today I got my CD4/VL and my doctors are intrigued: I am at 400/2,000 and the Western shows immune response to all HIV proteins.  How is all this possible in under 2-3 months?!

They are doing a retest just to make sure.

Have you ever heard any experiences like this?
October 2007 - Chose love/stupidity over protection
23 April - Diagnosed
30 April - CD4: 364/22.1% VL: 2,198
11 July - Started Viramune/Truvada
13 August - Undetectable

I tested negative in January 06, got sick in August 06, and was at 20000 VL in Sept. 06.
I guess this virus can be "dormant" in some for years, but in others, it pops right up.

Yes, I have witnessed it with my bf. He was always very healthy, and tested negative in May 2006 . He tested positive mid-november 2006 right after I did. His first numbers were CD4 300, 13%, and VL 4000. Pretty close to yours. You didn't list your CD4 %. My bf's <14 CD4% meant he had an AIDS diagnosis on that basis from his first HIV+ test. His CD4 then went quickly down to 240, 9%, and VL up to 30,000 by the end of january. His doctor ordered him to go on meds. Ryan White took 2 months to pay for his genotype. Then He finally started HAART in march 2007. He had one OI around the start of atripla, shingles. He switched to norvir/truvada/reyataz in december 2007 due to side effects of the sustiva in atripla. His VL has been undetectable since may 2007, but his CD4s vary greatly. One month they take a dip to 200. The next time back up to 400. He hasn't been above that level, though.

You have a new infection and your immune system will be all over the place to start while your body gets a grip on the virus -- your CD4 will take a hit for a few weeks, but if you follow the usual patten it will settle down (or up even...) somewhere nice for a while (is the answer).

That is interesting, Alexander!  You are similar to my results.  It's craziness.

After my retesting this week, both my aids doc and the primary nurse at the clinic think that I was infected in November (I had many acute infection symptoms early that month, plus an exposure risk with my boyfriend) and that I had a window period false-negative in January.

While it blows me away that I had a false-negative, I guess they don't call it the window period for nothing.

Looks like I need to update my signature...
