Joint Pains and Fatigue???
« on: March 13, 2010, 07:43:35 pm »
I was diagnosed poz in January 2009 and started Truvada/Reyetaz/Norvir in late October 2009. Within the past month to month and a half I have been experience severe joint pains that wake me up multiple times at night from the pressure of laying on the bed. In the morning, I am stiff and I remain achy throughout the day. Also, I am often very tired, feeling that I require naps throughout the day. One day I slept in til 10:30 am, went down for a nap at 1 pm, woke at 6 pm to take my meds, woke again at 10:30 to take my meds, and slept through the night until the next morning when I finally dragged myself out of bed around 9:30. So essentially I slept for 36 hours. The main joints that hurt me are my hips, back, and neck, with the rest of them just hurting moderately. I was wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this before or might know what it was? Thanks!

It's possible that it could be hormonal. Are your levels where they should be? Not just estrogen and testosterone but also thyroid.

I'm pretty sure my doctor checked my thyroid already. I know I have it checked every few months because before I went on the testosterone (I'm FTM) I had hypothyroidism. Since I've been on T, my thyroid has been normal.  But I'll mention it to the doctor and see what he says.

Odyssey, have you ever been checked for hep C? Joint pain and fatigue are common symptoms of hep C. When I had it, my joints were so bad I had to use a walking stick.

I have been having the same problems with most of my pain in the hips and shoulders.  My primary doctor wanted me to have my hips replace but I am against that partly because I do not want to be cut up like chicken legs but mostly I hope there is a less dramatic procedure.  It has been getting worst for the last five years but it is manageable now with help from physical therapy.   I now walk with the use of a cane and I measure the amount of distance I walk during the day.  Going up and down stairs is the worst.  Now I check daily on stem cell research: Treatment of Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head by Bone Marrow Transplantation and you may find it helpful for some have been helped.  There is progress in Colorado in stem cell therapy but it cost around $5,000 plus extras and there is no guarantee, as far as I am concern, that it is a true cure, but I live in hope that more research will be done.  I am not sure if Atripla is making the problem worst or has any affect at all but this is the first time I have read anyone having the same problem like myself.  Thank you for your subject for I have not connected Atripla drug with arthritis and it truly did get worst right after or during the drug treatment.  It should be noted that my Doctor points to the fact that I am 50 years old and this problem should be expected.  Also I have many of the same problems you related in tireness and feeling worn out.

:oHey There!!!  I have been dealing with joint aches and pain on and off for some time now...the meds I take is Atripla and that is one of the side effects....I just take some Nyproxen or  Tylenol when I can't take the pain anymore...also in the colder months the pain is more frequent....I just roll with the punches...nothing more I can do about it but excercising os also helpful...taking hot baths with epsom salt also is good.  I hope this has helped you ...take care...hope you are doing well...Love is in the light....Always, Mimi ;)

Well, I went to see a rheumatologist, and he pretty much ruled out any sort of autoimmune disorder. I think I was tested for Hep C when I was first diagnosed, but I've had unprotected sex another poz guy since then, so I guess I could have picked it up. I'll mention this to my doctor at my appointment on Wednesday and see if he thinks a repeat Hep C test would make sense. I just think in general that this whole pain and tiredness thing is getting really old really fast. I'd really like to find out whats going on and find a solution for it.

I have joint pain both on therapy and before i started. It never really improved and my joints and muscles hurt everyday. I am taking the same meds. I think it's the HIV and not the meds.

Try physical threapy which is mostly stretching and muscle building.  The physical threapy results gave me less pain and more flexiablity.

Well, I went to my doctor today and he said Hep C was really low on his list of concerns, because its not frequently passed sexually. What he did recommend was a period of treatment interruption to see if my medication was actually causing the symptoms. So, today, 3/24, is my stop date. I'm kind of nervous about stopping my meds when they had been working so well for me in terms of getting me to undetectable and bringing up my CD4, but it'll be interesting to see if this stops my joint pains and fatigue.

If you are taking Atripla, I think it is unwise to stop medication and your Doctor should know better.  I maybe wrong but I heard that stopping meds may be harmful to your health.

For the record, I was not taking Atripla, I was taking Truvada, Reyetaz, and Norvir. My doctor said it would be safe to interrupt treatment because all three have extremely short half lives in the body and thus there is very low risk of resistance developing while coming off. Of course, my VL will go back up and my CD4 count will start to go back down, but it wasn't in that bad of a place to start with, so he's pretty sure he knows what he's doing. And I trust that he does.
