Hi Dennis:
The Metro is about 3/10ths of a mile from the Metro - a short walk or cheap taxi ride away - fare is around $2.00

http://www.wmata.com/

Yeah I looked it up on the hotel web-site, WOW nice rooms were getting ( nice you Dennis) didn't know they came with of that, sofa bed, and the like, impressive digs with a great price-tag too  ;)

One question though, is that an underground type rail system?  Are there other options?  Maybe it's another fear to get over.  Watched too many Charles Bronson movies growing up I guess. ;D

Wolfie

I guess you could check the bus route. But the Metro is very nice, it is heaven compared to NYC's, and Union Station is a MUST see. I think you will like it. If nothing else pop a Xanax ;)

Edited to add: the Metro is quite safe also, you will see Police with body armor and Tech9 Machine guns prowling around.  :P

After the whole Whitney thing, I'm cautious about mixing pills with wine... :o  Such poor taste.

What the hell, I'll just add subways to another new adventure.  Hopefully I don't get raped mugged.

Wolfie,

The good news -- you get on the Metro at DCA above ground....  so, get on and open a book, you won't see yourself go "under"!  Of course, be sure to listen for your stop.   ;)

You'll do fine.......  remember, Mark is counting on you to find all the watering holes again.

I can't believe you country podunks are frightened of subway tunnels, or even spending 20 extra minutes on an EXPRESS bus from Dulles Airport -- the subway takes 10 minutes and the express bus about 25 minutes.

Seriously, what's wrong with you people and airport transfers. How the hell do you ever manage to travel around London or Paris.

Heaven forbid if we don't have our SUV gas guzzlers to get around to ever Walmart parking lot in the US.

Does the hotel have a pool? hubby & I looked on the web-site, but we couldn't find one, anyone know?  most hotels we've stay in before (on the road) do have an indoor pool, should I bring my swimming trunks or a sexy speedo  ;D

Does the hotel have a pool?

no, it's a business class hotel, not a Ritz Carlton resort

From what I can tell the Courtyard Marriott in Rossyln 2 blocks away has an indoor pools but not the Residence Inn.

Well seriously -- someone said $50 was the cut off in flying into DCA because of the subway transfer. Cheaper flights to Dulles only mean you take an EXPRESS but right to the hotel ($6)

Taxi from DCA to Rosslyn is ~17; subway is may $3

so anyway if you're looking for lowest flights to the are I don't think Dulles is a lot of hassle. You you girls really stress out over an express $6 bus ride cost from Dulles? Is's only twice what you'd pay from DCA and only takes slightly longer.

You'all a bunch of suburbanites.

Hey Henry and you other guys from Texas, I just got an email from Airtran advertising Sa to Dulles or Reagan for $210, Austin/Dallas are prob similar

Keep in mind the reason all the air fares look higher is because they now have to include all the taxes and fees into the advertised price.

Unfortunately, the only destinations where Airtran flies from Austin are Houston or Cancun.   >:(   Isn't Airtran a reincarnation of Valujet, and uses all those DC9 aircraft that are 40+ years old?   :P

I may just throw down some frequent fliers miles for my flight to Washington.  Heck, I'll ride my motorcycle to Washington if I have to!

I was thinking about taking Amtrak to DC , its only $124 round trip from Birmingham , then I read its a 18 hour trip one way . I'm finding airfare of $378 for nonstop service or $238 if I change planes in Atlanta . I could drive there in about 11 hours ... decisions decisions .

OK, so this is what I came up with

Albuquerque,  NM (ABQ) to Washington (Dulles),  DC (IA

Round-trip for 2 is about $960 ( not bad) but it's South-west-airlines, and i have NO IDEA how to get to the hotel from (Dulles),  DC (IA.....I checked (RR) Ronald Regan airport, but, anything in & outta there, is expensive, and cost twice as much  :-[   so are you saying it's only a $6 to $12 bus-ride to the hotel?

Um Yes, They used to be Valujet, the ones that flew upside down for 3 minutes then crashed in the everglades where most were eaten by gators.

but yeah, that aside, they have the newest fleet of aircraft out there. Ive been flying them for years and love it, the great thing is 90% of the time they will upgrade you to Business class for about $40 if you ask at the gate at the last minute.  8)

I agree with P. Btw, to get to Dulles (from Fredrock) I once took an Amtrak, then the Metro, then a shuttle bus..and I quite enjoyed it. Also that same day I also took a Taxi from the airport to my house. So in one day I took every means of commercial transport possible (except boat). So come on you puss's, buck up!  ::)

Hubby Bob and I already took care of it, found round-trip airfare on Obits.com from ABQ to DCA $946, not a bad price ( If you ask me)  ;)

Seriously, you people act like you're flying into Uruguay.

Also, this is a map of Metrobus 5A: http://www.wmata.com/bus/timetables/dc/05a.pdf

For example, if you board the bus at Dulles at noon you will arrive in Rosslyn at 12:35 PM, making only two stops during that trip as it's an express bus.

That's not much longer than taking the subway from Regan/National to Rosslyn, which is five stops, and maybe 15-20 minutes travel time. Though a difference of 25 miles travel versus 5 miles -- though wait times for buses can, of course, be longer -- the 5A seems to run every 40 minutes. Now, if 20 miles differential is worth $50 extra in ticket price then that says a lot, now doesn't it?

Fare comparison, off peaks -- Airport to Rosslyn is $2.15 off peak/2.35 rush hour
Dulles Metrobus 5A fare: $6

I was thinking about taking Amtrak to DC , its only $124 round trip from Birmingham , then I read its a 18 hour trip one way . I'm finding airfare of $378 for nonstop service or $238 if I change planes in Atlanta . I could drive there in about 11 hours ... decisions decisions .

Amtrak might be nice if you have the time.  Mark will extoll the virtues of train travel via Amtrak.

I suggest you take a plane, make a connection in Atlanta, and use the money you save to take me out to dinner.  :P

...  cause, if i fly that day JULY 26th , I ain't gonna make that 3PM check-in-time, and they might give our room away  ::)

Dear, the 3PM check-in time means that you can't check-in before 3PM.

Wow... where do you live? Idaho? Can't you read a bus schedule? It clearly lists it all in the link I just provided for both weekdays and weekends. You know, local residents take the bus to Dulles -- like they do in NYC to avoid an expensive taxi.

Or fly into Philly -- get a 2 day tour from me, then take Amtrak to DC. $70 RT w/cheapest fare.  But I slum with Greyhound :)

@ Henry, I called them (the hotel) and gave them my confirmation number, and they told me "not to worry, we will hold your room till way after 1AM" and ask me if I wanted them to put it in the notes under my name  ;)

@ Miss P were flying into Ronald Regan, not Dulles, isn't that about 1O to 15 min from the airport on the Metro-train to the Hotel?

Does the hotel have a pool? hubby & I looked on the web-site, but we couldn't find one, anyone know?  most hotels we've stay in before (on the road) do have an indoor pool, should I bring my swimming trunks or a sexy speedo  ;D

Honey, once you're over 29 you're much, much too old to wear a speedo. Anyway,m with that flat ole lipo ass of yours doesn't it look rather odd?

Indeed! How dare these AMG organizers not have a full itinerary six months in advance. What the fuck are they all doing? Personally I am outraged.

Hi Dennis:

Thanks for your question regarding itinerary details for AMG 2012. Typically, the Meet and Greet and Memorial Service are planned around 3-4 months pre-event.

This allows time to get a better idea of when the majority of members attending will be arriving and departing. We wouldn't want to have a Meet and Greet that was held prior to many members getting to D.C. (if only one person were there, that would be quite the masturbatory event  ;) --- and we want everyone to cum come!

Many times in the past these events have been organized by members outside of the AMG Coordinator (Dennis - who has once again done a magnificent job of securing a great hotel - a feat in and of itself) and the Grants Committee. This is, after all, a member-driven event. That is not  to say that the Coordinator or Committee could not arrange or assist in arranging the events.

Keep watching the AM Gatherings area for details on Arrivals/Departures, Memorial Service, Meet and Greet, Things to Do in D.C., and --- of course - Donations, Requests for Assistance, and Member Sponsorship.

Thanks again for your question.

Phil (who is looking forward to meeting so many members in D.C.)

With the help of Dennis I was able to book my reservation at the $109.00 rate.

But the agent did tell me that the block of rooms only has 5 left for some nights, so if you haven't yet booked and plan on attending, then I'd suggest you do so pronto.

Just an FYI.

RAB

Dennis can probably provide more guidance.

It's going to be a great AMG   :D
