Dog and crate
« on: February 09, 2008, 06:20:32 pm »
Hi all!

I have two dogs, Bonnie the lab mix and I have been pet sitting a great dane mix for a few months. I'm trying to find a place for the Dane mix because this was supposed to be temporary and the owner has had problems and cannot get her back.

My dilemna is crating. Bonnie has no problems in the crate, she actually goes in it when I watch TV, the door is always opened, she sleeps in it, no problem.

The Dane is another story. As soon as I put her in the crate, she starts panting, then as soon as i"m out she starts crying and barking. I'm never away for more than 2 hours.

Yesterday I came back and the Dane had pushed the door to the point that she had her head stuck in it, she was totally terrified and was foaming so much the carpet was covered with foam and the crate was completely wet.

I crated them again after leaving them out for a couple of months when I was away, because they started chewing on the furniture, even though I tried to keep up with the toys by buying new ones as soon as they destroyed them or stopped playing with them.

This is a difficult dilemna. I hate seeing her like this, but I can't come back in the house and see everything destroyed. She will be placed soon, I think, but until then what would you do? I tried consolidating the door today and she still managed to push it and was in the same state after I came back just less than an hour later. I walk them three times a day and I have a back yard where they can play, so I don't think it's a lack of exercise?

I am concerned about her hurting herself too.

Milker.

Hi Milker.

I'm not a crate person so I can't give you any expert advice but from what I've been told, if you crate a dog, you need to start from puppyhood.  You know, something about teaching an old dog new tricks.

However, I do have a solution.  YOu mentioned she might be placed soon. If not, I would be glad to take her off your hands.  We live in the country and have plenty of room for her.  She would love it up here.  Michael and I and our four girls can come down there and pick her up.

Of course I haven't told MIchael anything about this.  It would be a complete surprise.

Woah thanks for the offer! I'm hoping to place her in San Diego in a nice home but she can go anywhere! Here is the ad: http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10212043

I'm trying something as we speak. I've put her in the crate and stayed next to her. She started panting hard but then relaxed. As soon as she layed on her bed then I gave her a treat. I'm next to her now, and she suddenly stands up and panics every 10mn, but as soon as she gets back in a relaxed mode, treat, good girl, pet her. That may work?

Milker,
I think you are on the right track with reinforcing her good behavior.  I had to crate and lock inside my bedroom when I was living in an apt with friends.  She is a beautiful dog, she is lucky her original owners have such  a good friend.
Good Luck,

Robert- What a nice offer!  I hope the suprise goes over well! :)

Robert's offer is very exciting I must admit. I know Robert and he's such a great guy and I'd be able to bother him all the time asking for news ! LOL. Robert I will PM you.

The test I did today seemed to make things a bit easier for her. I did that for about 1h30. I just left to get groceries and when I was back she was panting and there was a lot of drooling but no crying. I still think she's never going to enjoy the crate ever, she hated it from day 1 when my friend got her at 2 1/2 months. She also has separation anxiety which doesn't help.

I also tried to not be excited when I came back. I read today that I should make the return a normal experience, not an exciting experience. I never had that problem with the other dog so that's new to me.

The Dane is very loving, she is very cute and I love her to death, but I'm not even allowed in my rent to have two dogs, and this is too much work for me and I want her to be happy.
