Men survive gruesome suicide attempt

Published on: 03/09/07

Two Atlanta men survived an attempt to kill themselves Friday by cutting off their arms with a circular saw, according to Atlanta Police Major Lane Hagin.

The men managed to sever three of their arms about six inches above the wrist, he said.

The two men — ages 40 and 41 — left a suicide note with the manager of their Atlanta apartment building saying they were committing suicide because their business had failed and they were recently diagnosed with HIV, Hagin said.

After reading the note, the manager called police who found the two men in their apartment with "a lot of blood," the major said.

Their names were not released. Police spokesman Steve Coleman said both were in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital late Friday and will undergo psychiatric evaluation.

No charges will be filed in the incident, police said.

You have to ask if they really wanted to kill themselves.

There are several fool-proof ways... but that one is a little... well... medieval, almost.

Although, in all seriousness... the bizareness of the whole thing leads me to wonder what sort of symbolism they were going for.

the ultimate, final act of BDSM?

No... something more Freudian than that... they lost their business, right?

What's that expression?  "Work with your hands?"

Maybe they did tried to kill themselves that way because they felt like they couldn't support themselves anymore so they tried to cut off the symbol of self-sufficiency.  Their arms and hands.

I don't know.  I'm just talkin' out my butt here.

But it's a very, very strange way to try to commit suicide, so I'm wondering what else might have been at play psychologically.  Or something.

kinda makes sense. I'm sure they didn't think this out too well. How did they decide who would have the last hand to left to continue......

very odd.

I don't know about this method. Strange does not begin to describe it. Wow, I like the way the article said they were going to have a phsych-eval. No, kidding. I don't think it was the HIV that made them do it. I wonder if drugs were involved? How could they have gone through that much pain without some sort of medication?

Mind over matter... like that hiker who hacked his arm off when it was trapped under a boulder... you can kind of force yourself to not feel the pain.

But drugs aren't too far off.

In fact, you bring up an extremely valid point.

This reeks of too much meth.

Should we start a new thread?

"Dumb ways to attempt suicide. A cry for help."

But in all seriousness, I hope they realize how precious life is, and reconsider.

Then there was that young guy who decided to do himself in and blew off his face with a shotgun. The police said they were really freaked out because there was this guy walkin' around with his face missing, groping at where his eyes were. He is now blind, but appreciates life. He was drunk when he did it on a whim when his girlfriend left him because of alcohol abuse. I think I will cross both of these methods off of my how to commit suicide without really tryin' list.

THE real issue here is POVERTY IN AMERICA, there is tremendous poverty everywhere in USA.  Many people who are middle class are really in deep poverty, the new econ. system of bush, which is everyone living paycheck to paycheck has reduced millions to poverty, many have  heard hiv is a disease where poverty and addiction intersect in many cases, there are also a thousand kinds of poverty not just economic, to loose a biz must be horrible, if gays could all afford fixer uppers like in the past and there was stable society, we live in very random unstable society, where most are surviving, with a few rich thrown in to make every one feel bad, this is a thousand word issue

we are in a debt ridden society where few have options few have safely few have real security, etc.

Well, seeing that we don't know all the details, I refuse to believe that it was HIV that caused them to do it. I find it insulting, especially for all the people here who continue to bravely face this, and keep a beacon of hope lit for everyone else. I am a teacher living from pay check to paycheck, I think most people have lived this ways since the beginning of time. Don't you think the landlord cave men were renting out those caves with an ocean view for pretty puka shell? I am not discounting the fact that the system is fucked. But I am just not ready to throw in the towel.

I agree with aupointillimite. This reeks of meth. And knowing what I know of Atlanta and it's gay scene, only reinforces that suspicion.

Being serious for a moment though i've led a sheltered life and know nothing about Meth, does it cause slightly unbalanced behaviour?  If so it completely explains this story I saw a while ago!

If by "slightly imbalanced," you mean "a completely batshit insane annoyance to everyone within a half mile radius," then yes... meth causes slightly imbalanced behavior.  ;)

...it completely explains this story I saw a while ago!

http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2002050329,00.html

Ahh, The Sun - that light in the darkness of british journalism…they who brought us such (classic, classic) headlines as

“Swan Bake” and “Now they’re after our fish!” - completely false articles about asylum seekers hunting & eating the thames river wildlife

"I'm Big in the Bumdestag" - a stunningingly insightful piece about german chancellor angela merkel’s rear

“Nail the Bastard” - an impartial piece on child murder

“Stick it up your Junta” - on Britain’s war with Argentina

…and asked that terribly important question “Is Britain governed by a gay mafia?

Gotta love the Red Tops  :)

kate

(to get back to the main topic, it does seem rather strange as an exit strategy…but then I once had a client who did a similar thing with a meat cleaver & a leg…it weren't pretty, it (thankfully) weren't successful..n there was absolutely no meth involved)

Ouch! Either the guy or guys were completely strung out or not the brightest bulbs in the marquee.

As for the feta - Mmmmmm! Nothing like freshly herbed feta!

I loved his comment "my friends have really been giving me the stick about it." I thought that's what he did to the goat, which actually should have called a ewe. Come to think of it, ewww! kind of goes along with it too.

Does anyone think that is his natural hair color?

HUGS,

I didn't immediately assume the men were gay or they were on meth. Out of the hundreds of people who I have assessed who have attempted suicide I have not heard of this one. It reminds me of a couple, male and female, I saw who were taking turns cutting each other to commit suicide. They both passed out and survived but they needed lots of sutures.

“Stick it up your Junta” - on Britain’s war with Argentina

Personally I think this was an excellent headline. Some much needed partiality in a war where the BBC were referring to British forces as "British armed forces".

These two men made it into the London Paper today, which gave them a tiny paragraph and omitted any mention of HIV. Typical. I certainly didn't jump to the conclusion that they're on meth, maybe because I have no experience of it and it's not a big problem in the UK yet.

During my psych attachment I saw a lot of weird ways people tried to kill themselves. A lot of it is opportunistic and the act and the method (jumping infront of a tube train anyone?) doesn't make sense to people on the outside. But these aren't decisions of ordered minds. I really hope that they have some good microsurgeons to sew these limbs back on, and some good psychiatrists to make sure they stay there!

Oh my goodness.  I think the meth thing is a big possibility or these guys are just plumb off their rockers.  People do try odd ways to kill themselves.  I remember one guy who was taken to our ER who basically sliced a hole in his abdomen and started sticking items in there.  We pulled out various office supplies--pencil, pen, paperclips, etc.  He even stuffed some feces in there.  The odd thing was the razor blade used to cut the hole was thrown in there--you'd think he could have used it to just slice the carotid or jugular easier, but we were able to get him to surgery.  Somehow the guy managed to avoid hitting any major arteries and didn't even need any blood.  I think they took him to the psych hospital.

What's funny to me are the comments.  I like the one where the poster likens cutting off a thumb to a tattoo - calling it 'aesthetics'.  I believe a tattoo it like paint on the wall and cutting off a thumb is like knocking a big hole in the wall - big difference.  Duh!

You have to ask if they really wanted to kill themselves.

There are several fool-proof ways... but that one is a little... well... medieval, almost.

I own 2 circulars and a chop saw. They really should have used the latter (Lean in with remaining torso/fueselage). Sounds suspiciously like those German cannibals from last year.

Did anyone find the "No charges were filed"  :o the least bit funny? Probably just me.

Whatever happened to the...you know old Roman Death-of-Marat (painting by David) thing? OK enuf on silly attempted suicide stuff. I don't want to encourage anyone anyway.

That link of Matty's was just too much!  Eew!  Thumbs down for that!  Eep!  I get the heebies just reading about saws and knives and needles.  You should see the dance I do when I have to do a blood draw!  Ugh.  I think I'm done with this thread.  I feel weak just typing this.

Its refreshing to see some dedication. Most bloggers are such amateurs,
and if youre squeamish , by all means dont put "Piercing" into a YouTube search  and Under NO Circumstances put " Root Canal'  in either..

thumbs up.!!!!
