Sustiva and Pistachios! NOT!!
« on: December 15, 2006, 08:49:40 pm »
Due to sleep problems with Sustiva I now take it in the morning and experience a moderate buzz 2 hours after taking it.   The buzz lasts for an hour or so....  Today I was at work munching on some Pistachios through the morning and by noon I had an insane reaction....my buzz was 3 times the norm to the extent that I thought I was going to die or end up in the ER.   I then recalled that on the Sustiva bottle it says "avoid fatty foods".  So for those who take an early evening dose or morning dose of Sustiva....avoid any fatty foods....nuts seem innocent but pistachios and cashews are some of the highest in fat....and most dangerous!  I ate lunch and drank alot of fluids and by 4pm I started to feel the buzz subside...WHEW!

I read in the pharmacokenetic studies of Sustiva that fatty foods increase the quantity of the medication absorbed by the gut into the bloodstream, thereby increasing the bioavailability of the medication, but also increasing the drunk/rush/dizzy side effects.  For some patients with GI absorption issues, some physicians recommend taking Sustiva with fatty foods.  It sounds like you have some fairly absorbent intestines, do you notice quick and strong caffeine/alcohol/sugar effects normally -- without the Sustiva?

My guts are like cast iron deflector shields and my doctor once told me that I have very expensive feces, which I didn't know quite how to respond to...  Scruff

I know exactly what he's talking about... I also have (apparently) absorbent intestines, as it takes me all of a few minutes to start feeling the effects of booze.

Any sort of food sets off the Sustivalicious effects in me... I just don't eat on it now.

Craig, I've discovered all sorts of little eccentricities, for a lack of a better word, with the interactions of different food and beverages and my various and sundry medications.  Trying to figure out which of the variables is most responsible for an effect is like reading a perfumed Agatha Christie paperback with the last chapter missing from the book, who did it?!

Sometimes, I'm like, WHOA! what the hell is going on, and then remember that I just polished off a pint of Haagen-Daz carmel cone ice cream after taking a hot bath, before my Sustiva, when I'm slipping into my jammies and the phone rings and who is it but my best friend who just returned home from a blind date I set up for him and HAS TO TELL ME ALL ABOUT IT even though he knows it's my 'don't call me' time and I'm mentally and physically rough riding the Sustiva roller coaster with and, WHOA!, tell me in the morning!

Good luck as you discover all the little 'joys' of hitting the bulls-eye on a moving target!

I've unfortunately have not had any type of buzz from sustive... I guess I'm gonna run and eat fatty nuts before my dose just to see if it works... I work with a bunch of flakes anyway... why not join them. Best of luck to all.

Oh dixie, you are most certaintly not unfortunate to have avoided the brain-a-rama good times with sustive. I say this because you I use the word good with emphatic sarcasm. If you've ever been stoned or stoned and drunk, that's what it's like, only it's the not fun version.

I think sustiva has even given me nasty flashbacks to the time I did mushrooms and had a 4 hour long paranoid psychotic episode.

she's a coy mistress, that little orange pill....

Hey Dixie....
For the first 4 months I took Sustiva at night and never knew about the craziness she offers....I rarely remember dreams and she did not offer any change in that.   I read about Sustiva causing insomnia on this site and the cure offered is to take it in the morning....if you take it as a morning dose you'll find out about the wild ride I am referring to....Whoa!  Crazy Indeed!  Could work for those on 2nd shift but certainly not when you gotta function at 9am!!  So tonite I will return to a night-time dose combined with a Sinequan which is an antidepressant that makes one sleepy.....so we'll see how that works!  I'll report back tomorrow!
