Price of Isentress & Truvada Until I Meet Deductible
« on: January 25, 2010, 05:43:14 pm »
Just wanted to share, in case anyone is interested, my policy has a deductible (which my job pays for so it's not out-of-pocket for me, they deposit the amount in an HSA account) so the January bill for the meds is always pretty high. After I meet the deductible this month, it's only $25 co-pay each afterward.

Isentress: $912.25
Truvada: $930.40

Keep in mind Isentress is only one medication and it costs about the same as Truvada, which is two.

The price of the meds is what scares me most about having HIV in 2010. I know about high R&D costs for Big Pharma, yada yada, and I do appreciate that the meds exist, but anyway you slice it, it's still outrageous.

Hi Inch, Gilead's results, which were published Tuesday after the bell (link below),  show just how profitable Atripla and Truvada (even Viread sales up as its now approved for Hep B) are. I'm not sure how much they pay Bristol-Meyers Squibb for the Sustiva element of Atripla. Or how much they spent on R&D for these drugs for how many years. But the numbers are big...  shareholders were rewarded with a nearly 3% gain in the stock price in afterhours trading.  Merck's Isentress sales still ramping up, haven't checked into any numbers.  That's the corporate perspective on these drugs....the personal impact is, as you say, scary.  just fyi. esper

Hey Inch,

I wish I had a $25 copay. I don't have the deductible to worry about, but I do pay $186 a month for my Isentress.  :'(

The Truvada copay is just $20.

I also use the HSA through my agency. I set aside $3,600 each year to cover the copays for meds, doctor visits, lab work, etc., plus a new pair of glasses. (I feel I deserve a new pair each year.)

I agree the costs associated with this disease can be scary.

HUGS,

Mark
