HIV Nutrition & Fitness books
« on: September 05, 2010, 03:59:40 pm »
Does anyone know of any good fitness and or nutrition books for HIV poz men? I have been looking online and have only found a handful. Of those many were written in the 90's. Anyone have any they can recommend? Thanks!  8)

I fail to understand why fitness and/or nutrition needs to be any different for someone with manageable HIV infection.  If you were experiencing clinical wasting issues then you would have special needs.  Otherwise there's no reason that you can't have a "normal" workout at the gym 4-5 days a week and eat healthy like a non-infected person.  If you're looking for some magic Brazilian tree bark supplement to cause you to gain 900 t-cells you're not going to find it.

Nelson Vergel has written some good books on the subject and he also answers questions about HIV and Nutrition on thebody.com:

Hello,

Although not a book,  The lessons offer some good information on nutrition and diet.  You can find those lessons here.  There are about 9 different pages to check out, starting here:

The book that worked for me is The Mood Control Diet.  It's not HIV-specific and nothing radical, just a concise restatement of the basics you already know: whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables, lean protein, a daily multi-vitamin, low fat, low sugar, low salt, low caffeine.

And that's it.  I had already reformed my diet before I was diagnosed, and I haven't made any changes for HIV.  The change is easy to do once you make the decision.  I did it overnight.

The nutrition lessons J.R.E. linked to are the first things I read at AIDS Meds, and pretty much follow the 'mood control diet'.  The book contains calorie and nutrient charts, and a number of recipes, and is useful for figuring out what foods to buy and how to prepare them, as well as portion sizes.
It's a complex world

Please honey, have you seen her in person?  Her body is courtesy of deca durabolin, and I doubt it's necessary.

I feel that it's worth noting that you don't have to be a Gym junkie to keep healthy - afterall not everyone is interested in such activities.

There are other ways to keep one busy and active - walk sometimes instead of taking a car everywhere.
I have a dog that needs walking and thereby gets me out on my feet - I know kinda freaky actually walking somewhere.

Use the stairs rather than a lift or escalator all the time.

Eat good food - learn to cook and make your own meals - rather than eating junk food like burgers n fries n pizza all the time.

I have been + for some 15 years and on combination therapy and still keep busy and not interested in going to the gym.  And thankfull have never been hospitalized thus far.

Oh and listen to your body - if you are tired then take a rest.  If need be have a 10-15 min nap to recharge the batteries.  Otherwise your body will not be able to fight the infection.

And good luck.

There are some good suggestions on this thread, but I really like TC's post that speak to simple common sense. Although I don't have a dog, I follow many of the other things TC lists that seem to still work for me after 25 years HIV+.
