Planning for AMG 2009 is coming to an end. And for your coordinator (whoever this may be next year), signals the beginning of planning for AMG 2010. While this may sound a bit premature, I want to ensure that everyone who wants to be heard on this topic has an opportunity.
Year after year, two aspects of AMG continue to remain the most controversial; the destination and time of year. Last year, I had the bright idea that those who took the time and effort to attend AMG should determine where the next AMG should be held. Although not my intent, this left many forum members to feel excluded.
So I'm bringing the decision back to you!
Post your choice of destination and time of year (month) below. The top 3 destinations will be put to a vote sometime after AMG 2009 concludes.

Chicago in September.

Dennis, thank you for remembering and taking the feelings of non-attendee's into account this time around. It's MUCH appreciated!
Before we start thowing all sorts of cities out there, could we first settle the issue of what continent and narrow it down from there?
I vote Europe. I'm open to any month.
Ann
-
Please, let's not turn this into a battle of the continents. We are choosing a city and month. If you want AMG to be held in Europe, then please choose a city in Europe. If you want AMG to be held in the U.S., then please choose a city within the U.S.
Please choose a specific city and a specific month.
Thanks
Dennis

Excuse me, but I'm not trying to turn anything into a battle. I just thought it would be easier to decide on a general location first. ::)
And specific month doesn't matter to me. I'll go with the flow month-wise.

Ann:
Before this disintegrates into another U.S. vs Europe discussion, I'm thinking there might be a compromise.
A European AMG is something that is entirely possible. All it takes is someone to move it forward.
Are you willing to do that?
Personally, I hate the reality of having two AMGs, but frankly that may be the only practical solution. I can't afford a European trip (and I doubt many can), but that shouldn't preclude European members from experiencing an AMG of their own.
To be honest, if there's a decision to have AMG in Europe, I suspect there would still be one in the U.S.
So what do we do? ???
RAB
-
I propose rather than turn this particular thread about U.S. vs European, that everyone very simply place their vote for a specific city and a specific month.
Let the cards fall where they lie when the votes are tallied, and a final vote is cast after AMG 2009. Should the votes favor a European AMG, than obviously this will require someone to take the concept to fruition.
Everyone has agreed that AMG should be for the members and by the members. So, rather than hash out this tired old debate which has occurred every year for the past four years, CAST YOUR VOTE!
However, I do agree. Should the "official" AMG be held in Europe in 2010, there will be a gathering of some sort in the U.S.

or we could meet inbetween the US and Europe.... Bermuda anyone? Iceland (hmmm.....) or Greenland (it gets a new name now that is independent of Denmark)?
Seriously, Dennis' suggestion of city and month seems the most reasonable and let the chips fall where they may. I once again suggest Las Vegas, Nevada and virtually any month. Room rates there even at the resort are at all time lows.

Sounds like the chips have already fallen Ann. My only suggestion to you (or someone else) is to try and coordinate a European AMG. If the coordinator and seasoned members have already determined that even if by some sort of miracle a city was chosen outside of the Northern Hemisphere and they wouldn't attend or coordinate and would proceed as usual with an AMG stateside, then why bother.
I guess you could still use this forum to coordinate and solicit funds for a European AMG.
(Covers head for inevitable pummeling.)
-
Simply unbelievable!
May I remind everyone from the U.S. and across the pond that on August 28, 2008 I tried to bring everyone together for an AMG in Europe in 2010. Again, no one has ever stopped there being an AMG in Europe. I'm not quite sure what Daschund means by "seasoned members." I hardly doubt any of the 20 something members who have regularly attended each AMG or myself have that much power over the membership at large here.
http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=22830.0
Review the topic above carefully. In almost a year, only a handfull of members participated, and even a fewer percentage from Europe. In fact, most I believe are from the U.S.
AMG in 2010 will be based on what members vote on. If you don't vote, than you can't complain.

I love all the "London is way to expensive" comments. How things change in a year ... it is now the cheapest capital destination in northern Europe and you can't move for the hordes of damned tourists on shopping expeditions.

Aye. I give up. Excuse me for having an opinion on how to proceed with anything having to do with AMG. I'll have nothing more to say on the matter as I'll probably get shot down in flames regardless of what I - or anyone else, I presume - might say. Nevermind that there's already been interest shown in having it in Europe in 2010 as evidenced in this thread (http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=22830.0), which was started last August but posted to recently.
You guys decide where to have it (and you've obviously already decided it's North America) and if it sounds good to me, I'll go. If not, I'll stay home yet again. No skin off my back either way.

(and who sees that Dennis has spoken while I was typing my relpy, but can't be bothered to change what she's already written. Whatever.)

Quite remarkably we have so far refrained from flaming or vitriol (this is the internet though....lol) This is the 'brainstorming" stage so there should be a free flow of ideas and suggestions. Usually from those suggestions a consensus emerges...this is a good thing. Please don't refrain from contributing to the brainstorming. AMG is a wonderful gathering but it is a gathering of cash strapped people all across the globe. Naturally there are logistical considerations...keep the suggestions coming!

Ann,
Nothing has been decided. All I've asked you and everyone else to do is vote for a city and month. So, far I've received 3 votes; Chicago, Las Vegas, and London.
What city and month shall I put you down for? I couldn't find Any City or Any Month on my map or calendar. ;D

London wasn't a suggestion. I live 500yds from the world's busiest concert venue - the last thing I want is more tourists expecting a free bed for the night (although I'd obviously make an exception for Ann)..
-
The heart says London in October -- I love England in the fall.
The pocketbook says Chicago in September -- I can drive or take the train into the city each day.
The smartass says Cairo in March -- I just wanted to throw out another continent.
Hugs to all,
AA
PS That was officially Chicago, September.

London, August.

Paris, June

Silly me! I somehow mistook your post pluggin' London as the cheapest northern European capital as a vote. Afterall, I only created this thread for members to cast a vote signifying their city and month choice for AMG 2010. Whatever was I thinking? ::)
Anyways. I vote for London in August. My teaching practicum begins the end August so any trip past then would be impossible for me.
And don't worry Luke. I'm capable of securing my own accommodations, as well as those for 50+ other people should we make it your way. ;D

I know that there was some discussion about having an AMG in a southern state.
How about Houston or New Orleans? Seattle would be lovely, too. I know that Aug / Sept seems to be a good time for everyone, but down south would be VERY hot during those months. Seattle seems to have pretty weather all year long.
Hubby grew up in N.O. and could help with arranging stuff if that's what's decided.

Please choose ONE CITY and ONE MONTH.
Daschund....which month woulld you like AMG to be held in?
Lakis...I'lll put you down for Amsterdam. Which month?
Minismum...Which city and month is your final choice.

Cleveland, Ohio - August
I love all the far-flung destinations; but I don't have a car anymore nor enough $$ on disability to get much further than the 50 miles to Cleveland. Unless y'all really want to visit the Football Hall of Fame here in my hometown of Canton. LOL There's always a big shindig of a parade, fireworks, and festivals at the end of Aug with the HOF Inductee Ceremonies.
If I'm ever going to meet any of y'all in person, the AMG will need to visit my neck of the woods - hence my locale suggestion. ;)
Though I might be able to make arrangements for Charlotte NC in early Aug of next yr, if my grandmother is still alive. (and she should be ;) ) I could make the AMG and celebrate at her 95th bday party in the same trip. ;D I'm sure my family could help me with those travel arrangments. ;)

Rome / Milan in August

One choice? Good grief, I'm female and could (will) change my mind 100 times between now and tomorrow. OK, here's my choices in order:
1. Phillidelphia
2. Seattle
3.Chicago
What month? We're flexible with whatever works out best for everyone else. But for the sake of getting into trouble, let's go with May.
Mum

Washington, DC in October

I'm not going to put a vote in here because I think it needs to be split into the US and Europe. I just can't afford to go the US or half of Europe come to think of it. I'm sure there is plenty of people in the US in the same situation. If a small gathering in Europe was proposed and there was enough takers then I'd be interested!
-
Thom and I are going to vote our 2 votes for Chicago in August 2010.
We will do the best we can to attend an AMG in the US next year, but one in Europe is out of the question for us. We have yet to see any interest from our European brothers and sisters to take the reigns to coordinate a celebration across the pond so we remain steadfast in our choice of a US venue.
With respect to all, R&T

I may journey to Lyon next Spring -- care to meet me for wine and cheese?

Thames Barrier still as busy as ever? Last time I was there in 2001 I landed about five Nigerian boys.

Official vote: Helsinki in late June.

Since Thom got a vote ;), Hubby's choices are:
1. Phillidelphia
2. DC

Mini's choice is Disney World ;D

Since we're allowed a proxy vote Matty has asked me to cast his for London. He's on the dole so any month will do. My husband (who wishes to remain anonymous) would also like to vote for London. Again any 'ol month will do.
I told him it would be a wasted vote but Sam insists on voting for Dusseldorf in January. :D
ps. Ms Phillicia, no matter the outcome I'm planning on a trip to London in 2010. Care to join me?

Luke,
Should I put your vote down for Orlando?

I'll put your husband's vote down for Dusseldorf in January.
Who is Sam? Is he a member of the forums?
Typically, voting is for active members of the forums. Does anyone object of Maty's vote?

Well...my boyfriend votes for London. However, my fb votes for Amsterdam. My mom and dad like Orlando, while my dog votes for Puppy Palace in Fort Lauderdale. ::)

Not that I really have any say in it as I haven't attended any yet, but I do think splitting it into a NA/Europe thing would be great. If there were people attending a Euro one that you wanted to see and you could afford it, nothing would be stopping anyone from attending it. Especially if they were held at different times. Hell, go to both. I know I couldn't afford it, but that would be neat to see.
I'm poor as shit and a college student (oxymoron). I vote the hour and a half trip on a bus I'd have to make to Philadelphia, as that's pretty much the only major city (outside of NYC, which is about the same distance) that I could make. xD Anytime in the summer would do. I guess July would be easiest for me.
-
Luke,
Should I put your vote down for Orlando?
Dennis,
No. I think it would be wrong for me to vote. I just don't feel that I have been around long enough to cast a vote.
I would definitely go if it was in Orlando; but then I'd also go to most of the European destinations mentioned - including Dusseldorf and Helsinki.
-
Hey Luke..you are a menber of the forums so you are entitled to put forward a destination you would like to see the next AMG held at..it has nothing to do with how long you have been here.

Well in that case I vote London in August (for no other reason than that our 5 spare beds can be thrown into the pot to help keep costs down for others).

I think these two posts are the most practical of all (and say what I've said a while back). There are basically two 'ingredients' that must be present for a successful AMG, in my opinion. These are location and time/date. Location doesn't just mean a convenient, fun place with lots to do. It also means a place where people can actually go. The cost of the location and transportation to it are paramount here. I think it's pretty obvious that there is no open account with which to pay for flights and / or lodging. Most attendees pay their own way; some receive assistance from other members. If we want folks to attend, we need to choose a location that's affordable for the majority.
Having two AMG's makes sense. Neither would be the 'main' or 'sub' event. Both would be equally important. For this to happen, there needs to be an individual to take the reins for a European AMG. BTW, hubby and I would love to attend an AMG in London, Paris, or most any other location (just not Mexico City again!), but it's not in the budget in the foreseeable future. Hell, Boston is stretching our finances this year.
I like to think of cars in situations like this. My dreams and wishes may be Maserati, but my wallet says Toyota. Guess which one wins?
-
London in August
Anywhere is Europe would be a special AMG trip.
David NC, I don't want to assume anything here as I don't know your business nor do I mean to imply any negative connotations...but this years selected city, Boston, is NOT a vacation on the cheap by any means. But yes, it still costs more to fly to Europe/hotel accommodations. A bit each month set aside to travel to Europe could be started by each individual soon as boston AMG is over and I bet a nice size group would result in several months. I'd love to meet Ann, see Chris again and several others at a AMG gathering, specific.

I had the same initial reaction to Boston. As I recall, it wasn't my first choice. Most any big city that's (1) not terribly hot in the summer (2) relatively safe (3) has good public transportation and (4) has some 'redeeming' qualities is going to be expensive. The only one that I can think of that meets most of these criteria is Las Vegas, but, believe me, it's hot as hell in the summer - it's 108° there at the moment. As we're finding out, the rates of $105 aren't all that bad at all. Our tickets were $250 each r/t to Boston, but I purchased them back in December; I bet they've been cheaper since. This makes the trip somewhat cheaper than Montreal and about on par for San Francisco if I'm not mistaken.
Setting more aside each month is gonna be tough on a lot of folks. People are suddenly unemployed, assistance benefits have been cut, jobs are cutting insurance benefits, etc. I think that a lot of people have a hard time committing, this far in advance, to a location as potentially expensive as is most of Europe, but this is my opinion only.
The only request I'd make is that those voting actually intend to participate in the AMG and not just to 'sway' the vote. As much as this is always a wish list for a vacation spot for a lot of members, I just hope that people who are voting for places that they can barely afford, if at all, keep this in mind (remember my Maserati vs Toyota analogy).
Having said all that, I'm going to vote for Chicago in August.
David (who's going to drive home in his ever-practical Toyota in about 30 minutes ;) )

Yes it is hot in Vegas this time of year...but everything is very well air conditioned and it is so super easy to get around to everything. Furthermore, airfare and hotels are really inexpensive right now. At the moment, the Luxor is $38 a night and MGM is around $50 a night. I am biased because I LOVE going there and usually visit twice or three times a year. I am very sensitive to the cost factor and this would be an affordable spot.
Gary
I think the debate about where to have AMG is almost as fun as the event itself! :D

I agree about Vegas. I've been in the summer, winter, and in between. It's one of our favorite destinations. Trips to the desert are fun (with a well air conditioned car!) Mount Charleston is cool to chilly even in the summer. Lake Meade has a lot of interesting things as well. Vegas would be a good choice. We generally stay downtown which makes getting around a bit easier (hotels are MUCH smaller there). This would be a close second to Chicago for me.

I just returned from a week on a work trip to Chicago. Quite expensive...but a fun city. There will not be cheap accomodations or meals there. Nevertheless, I always have a good time in the Windy City...
Gary
-
No necessarily true. A quick search on hotels.com shows the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown Magnificent Mile @ $121 and the Tremont Chicago (N. Michigan Ave) @ $122.
I've stayed at the Tremont and a B&B in Boystown, both at $100 a night. I was also able get secure a room at the Chicago Marriot on Magnificent Mile for around $150. This was in the months of September and October.

I'm changing my vote...Las Vegas would be the most economical, no matter what the month (assuming I don't hit a jackpot on the first day and try to ride it for the next week!) Maybe October?

OOOhh. I like Las Vegas. I have a friend from college that lives there, I just told her about being poz a couple weeks ago, not that I need anymore incentive to see you you all again. ;D

I could do Vegas, as long as everyone promises to drag my butt out of any casino they see me in! When? I don't really know. I went one time and it was late January. Not exactly warm and sunny, so couldn't enjoy the pool.

We could put a shock collar on you, because none of us could drag you anywhere.
Has anyone considered a cruise? You can get some great deals, including airfare and cruises are all inclusive, except for booze. But we can set up a full service bar in RABs room.

I'll make the sacrifice and try to wrestle Paul out -- oh, wait -- a casino is a public place -- never mind -- use his shock collar to get him someplace private and then I'll jump on him... ;D ;) Actually, I'd probably be right in there with you -- Sid too -- we do like to gamble (hmmm, maybe THAT is why I'm in these forums..... ::) ).
I love the idea of a cruise -- I've been on about 14 or so. In so many ways it would be ideal -- and afford a good amount of time to just spend together chatting, etc. Of course, I know some people will be very worried about motion sickness, although, quite honestly in all my cruises I've seen next to no one suffering from seasickness.
An added plus of a cruise --- Paul in a speedo!! :P

Mike, are you changing your vote from Paris to a cruise.
Everyone remember, this is not the final vote. The top 3 destinations mentioned will be placed into a final vote which will decide the location for next year.
May I also suggest when you pick your month, try to make it easy for the organisers. Stay away from large events in the destination you choose and remember, it does take a good year to plan this.

I am changing my vote to Vegas, although I would like to do an AMG in Chicago sometime. I think October would be nice, but I've heard that there are a lot of conventions then and fewer deals, though I'm not sure if this is true or not. Otherwise, Aug. or Sept. would be fine. It'll be hot, but we'll be inside a bit during the day. It will be much cooler at night. Add in the very low humidity and it makes for tolerable daytime temps (just don't stay in direct sun long!) and comfy nights. I'd recommend, if we do decide on Vegas, that we get a hotel downtown. They're smaller and easier to get get into and out of. The larger hotels require a lot more walking just to get outside (remember, the goal of a hotel in Vegas is to keep you in their casino!) As many have mentioned, Las Vegas can be VERY affordable with flight / hotel packages in hotels that would be very expensive in other locations.
I've included some links to nearby attractions we've enjoyed on our 4 or so trips to Las Vegas. There are obviously many more.

A Caribbean cruise would be fun and more reasonably priced than a European cruise, which would be awesome...January is probably too soon, it is still cold and damp in much of the country in March, maybe early March would be good, but many folks could not get away so a cruise to the north like Alaska in August would be fun. So I will vote for a cruise and leave the month open.

Mike
Well, we do 'come' as a package! ;)
-
LOL ::)
Well, being a college student, my vote is for the month of August.
In terms of a city, I'd honestly think Seattle might be fun, but definitely have a preference for affordable cities.
-
(Here hoping not to get a "whooping"... I am with those who suggest having a European and an American version of the AMG. I'd actually try my best to attend both as it'd be my first time.)
But, just in case, my main vote goes for London, August (I guess?).
Then I'd vote for Vegas.
I'm kinda surprised that no one has mentioned my [current] hometown, Miami. But then again I guess that all that this city/town has to offer is extra-hot weather, beaches full of models (not!), a choice of either trendy or seedy bars and pubs, and a few strip joints. Culture is probably not our forte.
-

Well, yes, we are David but I am me and me gets a vote cause every vote counts unless you're in Ohio for the 2004 presidential election.... ;D

I'm "ALL IN" for Vegas! Doesnt matter to me when.

Woohoo! I vote for Las Vegas in spring or fall but not in the summer. It's to hot!
or DC in October. Mary
Beside I have been wanting to go back to LV for a while.
-
Ok -- while I'd love to do this on a cruise -- I think the way to make it possible for the most folks to attend is to go with Las Vegas. Yes, that's my final answer.
Mike
-
Yes Mike, I do read the forums. I knew exactly when and where everything was that was planned ;D
I've decided next year there will be a test prior to AMG. Anyone receiving less than a 90% will have to either retake the test or be banned :P
I'll note your choice for Vegas.
Ciao,
Dennis
Don't you read the forums??? ;D
Actually, I will be changing from Paris, but I'm still trying to decide on Vegas or a cruise -- I'll settle it in the next day or so -- PROMISE.
Mike

Yes Mike, I do read the forums. I knew exactly when and where everything was that was planned ;D
So why weren't you always there with us?? Oh, right, now I remember............ ;)

It not my fault you all chose an AMG location where the boys are cute and OVERLY friendly.

Sorry for this Dennis, but I must change my vote from Nairobi, to
Las Vegas, in October!!!
As soon as everyone decides we can actually do Vegas, I will reserve my space in the RV park at Circus Circus, and be in the middle of the strip, and the coolest indoor carnival in the west!
-
No problem, Moffie. I've put your vote down for Vegas!
I propose we keep this thread going for another few weeks. At that time, we can take the top 3 destinations and put that to a vote. OR...we can just declare the destination that gets the most votes here as next year's destination.
Discuss.
Dennis
-
I would vote for Las Vegas in the spring or fall, say April or October.
-
I think a top 3 vote would be best. It would give folks time to research the choices before making a final vote. Probably evoke a pos / neg discussion about the choices also.
Mum
-
all right, so skip the rafting trip down the wild and scenic Rogue River.
I'll second New Orleans.
robert

I will nominate Dallas...central location, lots of variety of places/ sites/ things to do easy to get to from most cities lots of connections to others.....I live close by..
Nick

I love Vegas! The last time I went was when I saw Madonna on her 'Confessions' tour. I wouldn't mind attending a gathering there. My vote is Vegas, baby! ~ in October.

I think I agree with David's assessment re: LV.
So here's my suggestion/nomination.
Las Vegas
August

Let's keep this going a bit longer. Below are the destination other's have mentioned thus far; in no particular order. Please feel free to place your submission for one of the destinations below, or another of your choosing.
When interest in this thread subsides, I'll place the top three destinations into a vote to decide the location of AMG 2010.

Las Vegas
London
New Orleans
Orlando
Philadelphia

I know it says to put in for one, but I'm putting in for 3. Spank me next year, Dennis ;)
In no particular order, my (our) choices are:
DC, and Philly. Hubby's choice is N.O. (he grew up there and could give info about "stuff" to do if you want.)
-
I could give an excellent architectural tour of Philadelphia, and naturally I know the best location for a classic Italian hoagie. In fact, I had one on Tuesday.
Oh, and we could have the Meet & Greet in the "Bear Room" of the Club Body Center.

You have to be difficult ;D
You can't have three votes. If I give you three votes than I have to give everyone three votes. So, this is how I've broken it down for you.
Is this your final vote?

Oscar New Orleans May

Me: Philly in early August
Hubby: NO in early August
Mim: will go where ever we do. ;)
Hubby has finals May 16th (18th?), then summer school starts in June and ends the last part of July. Then regular session starts the end of August. I do suggest that we NOT do NO during the Jazz and Heritage Festival. You have to pay just to get into downtown and it gets very crowded very quickly. Plus, hotels are probably already sold out - and they are expensive!
Mum
-
Posted in another thread but was asked to post her as well :)
My vote:
1. Chicago
2. Seattle
3. London
Other great locations for me would be Helsinki, New Orleans, and D.C.
Not 100% sure I will attend in '10 due to work and school schedule but if I could any of the cities above would be appealing to me.
S.
-
Well,
I would love to do Europe, or have Europe do me, whichever.
But I'm afraid until the economy perks up a bit, or the Europeans drop their prices, that isn't in the cards for me.
Regarding Chicago, I'm sure that would be great as well. I had a layover there on the way to and from Boston and I explored a little bit. I did discover that Chicago smells a lot like Mexico City, which I found interesting.
OK, my three nominations go to:
1 - Las Vegas - its reasonable and there are bunches of things to do. (And Tim said he could attend).
2 - New Orleans - Because we've never done The South and I think it would be fun. (And maybe Alan could attend).
3 - Chicago - Which I am sure will be fun, but I think would be a bit more expensive.
Time?
Spring is out for me. I don't think I can afford a trip so soon after the holidays.
August would be fine, but I'll go with the flow.
There you have it
HUGS,
Mark
I would be glad to guide Longislander away from the gaming tables. We seasoned gentlemen have out ways! ;)

Hi AMG coordinator, I will vote with my Davids for Las Vegas (so much fun, probably because no one does trashy better than Vegas, Cliff....) My favorite month for it would be September, but the Razorbill can"t be with us. So I will bear the heat in August, Earnestly, for my friends! If I only get a half of a vote as the Davids wife (LOL) that's OK
-
Bonnie,
The August heat is manageable... I think they even air condition the sidewalks! I stayed there last summer just before going to Mexico City and it was 105 during the day, but still was able to go outside and walk around. At the pool, one would definitely want the shade, but that is available too.

Warmth of 105 isn't bad at all. We hit that here several times this summer and all I used was my evaporative cooler.
I don't recommend gardening at 2 p.m. though.

Look here, missy, dealing with us is a gift in itself, as you should know! After all, you chose us for the scavenger hunt!

Cleveland, Ohio - August
well, I have to change my suggestion. Who would have known when I put in a vote for Cleveland just two months ago, that things would be changing so much for me. LOL Within less then 2 wks, after 24 yrs in Ohio I'll be moving back down to the Carolinas. :o
Because I still won't have a car and I'll still be on my fixed income, I'd like to change my suggestion to Charlotte NC. :D It's been two and a half decades now since I lived there, so I can't recommend any of the advantages of holding AMG there. ROFL ;D I can't even point out any of the local sights as the city itself has literally tripled in population while I've been living up with the Yankees. ;D If anybody else wants to choose Charlotte, I promise to find out all I can about the area to help make the trip good for y'all. ;)

It has been suggested we move forward with the final for the AMG 2010 destination.
Please review the information below, as well as the attached document. Please notify me immediately If I have overlooked you, entered your choice of destination incorrectly, or you would like to be added or change your choice at the last minute.
The top 3 destinations which are slated to be placed to a vote are…
Las Vegas 15 votes
Chicago 5 votes
London 4 votes
The month of August received 14 votes, followed by October with 4 votes. Many members did not mention a time of year or stated it didn't matter to them. I suggest we stick with the month of August as the time of year. Any objections?
Again, please review the attached information and notify me immediately of any errors or corrections that need to be made. We'll allow a few days for review before we start voting.

Looks fine. RAB's vote is missing but it won't affect the outcome just moves Hot as Hell, trashy as ever, boring after 2 days, didn't we do that already Las Vegas up another notch! ;D
Sounds like a good plan. I think August is kinda the accepted month, not really sure it's worth voting on the month again.
-
Hot as Hell, trashy as ever, boring after 2 days, didn't we do that already?
Sorta reminds me of you mister. :-*
RAB
Edit to add: August is fine w/me too.
-
Hot as Hell, trashy as ever, boring after 2 days, didn't we do that already Las Vegas up another notch!
Cliff, As has been stated earlier in this thread, NO we "All" didn't do Las Vegas, but a few from San Francisco gathering made it a stop on the way home.
As for the rest of your edict; Las Vegas, like any other large city in the West, is equal to what YOU bring to the party. If you bore that easy, I suggest that it is not "our collective" problem.
-
Oh Moffie you take me too seriously! What's the point of voting if you can't do a little trash talking every now and then?
I think the results of the vote is a foregone conclusion. If little ole London has Vegas shaking in its rhinestone studded boots, Houston, we've got a problem.

notice those people who chose Vegas also chose Aug. They're an odd group, those Vegans (?).
Now I know Mike (mjmel) and Oscar (Minismomshusband) and I chose New Orleans. I bet if you asked Mini (and why not? she is going, isn't she? In fact, were it not for Mini, why I don't think we would even be talking to Mom or Dad so there is an arguement her vote carries more far weight than her parents) ...anyway...if you were to ask Mini I bet, just because she loves her Daddy do much, she would vote for New Orleans.
Which means New Orleans also has 4 votes, tied with London. ;D
So what do you say?
-

I say Vegas still wins! ;D
-
Boy, there's more vote rigging going on here than in an Iranian presidential election.
-
I'm with Mini and gang ... and choose New Orleans [my homefront]. However, August is humid and hot but unlike Vegas very green. Eventually, I'll make an AMG whether it's North America or across a pond and look forward to meeting y'all the same. -YaKa
-
My unbiased opinion is the Robert is exactly right. I asked Mini and she said that she wants to go either to Disney World or where ever her daddy goes. And with Yaka's vote, that gives 'Nawlins 5 votes - MORE than London.
Mum
p.s. To quote Mim exactly, she said, "yeah, sure, whatever." ;D
-
I think it would be beneficial to consider at least one city outside the US in the 3 choices. I know some want those of us living outside the US to start a separate (but equal) event. But that's not the point. It's a gathering of people from all over, I loved SF for the fact that we all flew in from all over the globe to be together. The more it's held in the US the less this happens. I know most people outside the US have gotten a bit cynical about the whole process and just choose not to participate, but I have always remained (perhaps in vain) hopeful.
I understand that this is a democratic (and thus fair) process and I don't take exception to wherever the voting lands. But I just ask folks to reconsider an all-American city selection result.
My last shot.
Cliff
-
Well, right now it looks like it's going to be LAS in August although the way the voting seems to be swaying I think Huey Long might be running the election! ;)
However, if Chicago still has a chance I just wanted say that while I don't live in the city anymore (suburban Indiana about 45mins from downtown) I did live there 15yrs so could be of some help.
I agree with Cliff an AMG outside of the US would be great ... but I'm currently (or is that forever) poor so unless some AMG sugar daddy wants to pay my way I can't go too far. :o
AA (wondering how many people have to google Huey Long) :D
-
Huey P. Long was from Louisiana ;D

I vote London. :-*

I change my vote from Vegas to London.

London would be nice. even Paris.
I'd consider Chicago also.

London. :)
ps - Thank you Cliff.

New Orleans...

My vote remains London since the only thing I like more than Beignets is Treakle Pudding. yum.
-
I vote for London as well.
-
My last shot.
Cliff
London.
But it would have to be in the fall. If London is ever going to have a shot at this it will have to be in the Off season (usually Oct. to Dec.)
August is High Season and the fares are high.
The lowest fares are during the winter months (Jan-Mar).

I am, especially if it's in London or another venue on this side of the world. I might attend if it's in NO, but Las Vegas, no way. I've got no interest in seeing Las Vegas and wouldn't dream of spending money to get/stay there.
Ann
PS - Anyone who is a member here can vote. If they end up not going, that could be because they didn't like the venue chosen or maybe something else came up. We cannot nor should not exclude anyone from voting just because they can't guarantee 100% that they'll go.

Yes, YOU should vote for somewhere you can attend. If you're not able to attend something in Vegas, it'd be foolish for you to vote for it.
I agree that things come up and people don't attend. However, why would somebody vote for a location when they know they will not be able, or have no plans to try, to attend.
-
We'll continue this thread until the end of the day, today (September 5, 2009). At that time, I'll tally the top 3 destinations mentioned and create a separate thread to vote for the destination of AMG 2010.
And just to clarify, I will be using the first destination mentioned in your first post, UNLESS you have explicitly stated that you are changing your choice.
-
Can you repost the latest vote tally prior to ending the vote?

Whoa, hang on now, you're going to close the voting with less than 24 hours official notice, and on Labor Day weekend when many members might not even be logging on? I seem to remember that in past years more definite advanced warning was given, in fact - and correct me if I'm wrong - I believe there was a thread in OT to announce the voting was coming to a close.
This should be given at least a few days definite advance notice. You said only a couple days ago that you'd give it "a couple days", but you weren't specific as to what day and it was very vague. I had to go back and hunt for any mention of the voting coming to an end.
Could you not push the deadline back until Tuesday or Wednesday and make an announcement today in OT about it? If you start an announcement thread, I can sticky it for you.
And no, I'm not being awkward. I'd just like to see more effort being made to make sure everyone knows this stage of the process is coming to a close. Thanks for understanding.
Ann
-
While I would be OK with ending this phase of the location voting (i.e. narrowing down to the top 3), given the number of votes, the length of time it's been going and the Coordinator's statement of letting this go a few more days (a few days ago)....... I DO see Ann's point here and agree that it is more than reasonable.
Perhaps we should hold off until Wednesday and then provide the "final location vote" thread. Not sure how long we have usually done that one -- but I'm guessing a couple of weeks should suffice. Personally, I'd like to wrap up the location (and timing) relatively soon, so that I can plan out my year.
Let me know if I can help in any way.
Mike
-
Reposting my vote for Las Vegas. Just want to be clear on that. Not Chicago, but Las Vegas.
Thanks!
-
As has already been stated, I posted 3 days ago (a few) that this phase would be coming to an end. I presume everyone know's how long a few days is. This thread has been up since June 28, 2009. The purpose of my last post was to inform people that this phase was coming to an end.
Considering the amount of people who have cast their votes in the past few, I don't see the holiday weekend having any bearing or effect on this phase.
However, if you think extending this phase until Tuesday will have any effect on the top 3 destinations that will be put forth for the final vote, than so be it.
As it stands, Las Vegas has 17 votes, London 9 votes, Chicago, 5 votes, and New Orleans 4 votes.
I honestly don't have a problem including the top four mentioned destinations in the final vote, due to the closeness of Chicago and New Orleans if it will mean we can move the process along. I don't think prolonging this, yet a few more days, is going effect the final outcome.
-
No problem.
Can you repost the latest vote tally prior to ending the vote?
-
Robert,
You mentioned New Orleans up above. Are you changing your choice to London?
Mr AMG....New Orleans
-
Las Vegas was always a dream of mine and one I got to live in 2007 when we did a side trip after our SF gathering...it's time for me to head in the other direction to see my kids in the UK, so London would have to be my vote.
London

What is AMG?
-
I don't know what AMG is but I vote for London. It's not that expensive and probably not more than traveling to any other country.
I love all the "London is way to expensive" comments. How things change in a year ... it is now the cheapest capital destination in northern Europe and you can't move for the hordes of damned tourists on shopping expeditions.
*gets the ArmaLite ready*

I am new to Poz Forums; but I would like to vote for London in August.
I have been to all of the choices in the USA; but, the only two European countries I've visited are Ireland and Scotland.
I think it would be nice, in any case, to meet some of the Forum members in person.
-
What is AMG?
There are a few threads about (I think) that explain the AMG - here's one I found. I'll post this thread in the announcement thread too, for other new people who don't know about the AMG.
What is AMG? (http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=4794.0)
I've edited the voting deadline announcement thread in Off Topic to also include the itineries of past AMGs. Please see that thread for information, rather than asking here. :)

Making it crystal clear that I am voting for Las Vegas. London sounds magnificent, but in the end would be unaffordable for some of the AMG regulars...I am not certain at all that I could swing it but I would at least try.

London it is.

apologies, I would like to shift my vote from London to Vegas...

Las Vegas, any time ,but August is preferred...
Nick

I'd definitely attend any gathering in the UK so put me down for a London vote.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the US ban on HIV+ travellers still stand? There was a protest here about it less than a month ago:
http://www.theprovince.com/health/Activists+protest/1899635/story.html
As long as it does, I wouldn't attend an AMG in the United States.

As long as it does, I wouldn't attend an AMG in the United States.
Well then, my advice would be to vote for a destination outside of the U.S. But no intention of attending hasn't stopped anyone from voting anyway.

My vote :
1) Anywhere in the European Union-Schengen borders (that excludes london :( ), anytime of the year.

Just a quick reminder that this phase of choosing the destination for AMG 2010 will end this evening.
Tomorrow morning I will post a tally of all destinations mentioned in this thread.
A separate thread will be created with the top 3 destinations put to a final vote for next years destination.

Dennis,
My partner and I vote for Las Vegas.

This phase is closed.
Thank you to all who participated.
The top 3 destinations which will be placed to a vote for AMG 2010 are
Las Vegas 20 votes
London 13 votes
