Ever get the impression you are not getting the whole story, or that something big is about to unfold.
I'm assuming this stuff is being reported elsewhere - the stories about the cyber attacks on Google and some 20 other big companies, the warnings that Internet Explorer is not safe from cyber attacks, companies prohibiting any staff visiting China from using any telecommunications or IT equipment.

I get the feeling that there has been a very major security breach somewhere (beyond the attacks on google and other companies) in all this and that we are yet to be told all the details.

Check out this article (translated from China Daily, published Jan 7) entitled The Time Has Come
to Lay Down the Law
. Here are a couple provocative excerpts:

China must engage actively and shape U.S. policy choices!

***

Merchants care for nothing but profits, so we must cause disastrous damage to the profits of those companies and interest groups that impinge on the interests of the Chinese people. We must ensure that they will always remember.

Hoo-boy! :o

edited to add another article from the same site as above

Is Google Doing Business or Engaging in Politics? from China's Nanfang Daily, published Jan 16. Excerpts:

Initially, Google’s complaint was that its server was being “attacked.” Later, this complaint surprisingly turned into a request for China to stop its Internet censorship. From the common problem of Internet security, Google has jumped to demanding that China change its laws — an act that has truly confused the Chinese people.

***

Currently, there is controversy regarding China’s management of Internet access, but any changes must be in full accord with China’s current situation and must consider Chinese society’s tolerance for change as the basic standard for making a decision.

***

Google wants China to abolish Internet censorship. The result of this would be similar to what the U.S. Web site Mashable stated in an article: “To think that China would change its rules and allow its citizens unfiltered access to what it believes is objectionable content (e.g. porn), as well as information and images on its greatest atrocities, is absurd.”

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

China better learn to grow their own food. They have a lot of room to talk using Child labor.

Thanks Ann. Some interesting articles.

Rod, the problem for the US is that China now holds the purse strings. They could cripple the US if they decide to stop funding your debt.

Soy Beans and Corn can be used in the making of ethanol to be used right here in the US. Won't hurt the US as much as it would China.

Serously Rod, don't be so arrogant and cocky, or is it naive? My understanding is that China is pretty much self sufficient when it comes to food. And anyway, it could get food from pretty much anywhere that it wants, I don't think the US has a monopoly on world food supply.

America on the other hand owes China over $800 billion and climbing. It is the single largest foreign holder of US Treasurys - if China pulled the plug you would be royally screwed. If you don't think it will use this debt as leverage, you are kidding yourself and living in fantasy land.

"The problem for the United States is that at this stage in the global economic cycle, the U.S. needs China more than China needs the United States. The current administration’s massive spending program financed by foreign debt is in a large part bankrolled by China, and although China could suffer if the United States were ever to default on its debt, that same risk doesn’t mean that China couldn’t start restricting future flows of debt to the United States.

But even aside from the debt equation, China proved over the depths of the global financial crisis that it doesn’t need to rely on exports to the United States to continue on a growth path; domestic demand continues to surge in China, and inflation in the United States is kept in check by the cheap flow of Chinese goods" The Inquisitr

China is not dumb, they see how the internet has made the US state run media,ABC,NBC and CBS irrelevant.
One of the main reasons China attacked Google and Yahoo is a counter move to the anti trade and protectionist policies of US the past few months.

By the way, Microsoft, released the patch today,( see my earlier post), to fix that security flaw in  Internet Explorer. If your using Internet Explorer, don't forget to download it, from Windows updates.
