Question about facial wasting.
« on: February 15, 2009, 09:08:37 pm »
Does this happen due to meds or without meds as well?

Hey Mpositive,

Are you speaking of the loss of subcutaneous fat in the face as occurs with lipoatrophy?

If so, the answer to your question is , yes. Some meds may cause it, but an exact cause has not been found.
Here is a link discussing lipoatrophy and its causes:

If you are talking about HIV wasting, then the answer is no, the meds don't cause this condition. In fact, they may be a part in the process of stopping wasting.

Here is a link to more info on HIV wasting:

Hope this helps.

HUGS,

Mark

Yes actually, that is exactly what I was speaking of.   Is that related to the Meds or just having HIV period?

Thanks for your responses by the way.   They really have helped me tremendously with this new "hurdle" in my life.

aztecan gave you a good source... also why not and google up some information on facial wasting... alot of information is online... it could be possibly the virus? but, I'm more inclined to think its the meds... its still debateable... there are certain drugs which speed it up... zerit, d4t, etc... lots of information online.

Hey M,

There has been a lot of debate about what causes lipoatrophy.

It is a pretty good bet some of the nukes (nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors) could be a contributing factor, especially some of the older ones such as Zerit (also known as D4T) and, to a lesser degree, Retrovir (also known as AZT, Zidovudine)

\All of the nukes could potentially cause it, but newer ones, such as Truvada, which is a combo of two of the newer nukes, seems less likely to cause lipoatrophy.

Some of the other classes of meds also may contribute to it, or to its wicked sister, lipohypertrophy.

However, it is very possible the virus itself may cause some lipoatrophy. There has long been discussion about this.

I don't know if this made things clearer or just muddied the water, so to speak.

Anyway, that is what I know.

HUGS,

Mark

Muddier never....it's all an education.  Hearing from everyone just makes me more informed and somewhat prepared.
Thanks all!
M
