"Big" Blip?
« on: May 25, 2011, 10:41:26 am »
After nearly 6 years on meds (last 4 or so on Atripla) and having an undetectable VL and Tcells in the 700's (at last appointment), my VL has popped to 105 and my tcells are down to 450.  My doctor does not seem at all concerned but to me, this is a bit more than just a "blip".  Maybe I'm just being paranoid.  Also, I noticed on my lab report (Quest Diagnostics) that the threshold for an undetectable viral load has been lowered as of March from 48 to 20.  Anyone else aware of this and have any thoughts on what it might mean?

Thanks :-)
Infected:  Probably 1995
Diagnosed: June 2005
Baseline VL: 650,000
Baseline CD4: 30

Last Dr. Visit: 12/2013
VL: Undetectable
CD4: 700
Meds: Complera

I have had a couple blips around that same amount. When I was tested 3-4 months later it was back to undetectable.

Blips both up and down, I always believe the up ones and try to ignore the down ones.

Two things,

First a big blip is like, in the low 1,000s

Second, viral load tests are always getting better at counting lower. Thee is no known benefit in having, say, 15 copies vs 58 copies, it's under 50 that counts. Also, some newer makes of tests give more just over 50 results like yours, which is unhelpful.

I would say if you're concerned about it get retested in 2-3 weeks to see if your viral load goes down. Blips do happen, but I  wouldn't wait longer than a month.
