Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Erotic bath and now need PEP

Dear all. I came across this website and hope that someone can give me informed advice before I seek PEP.

I attended a spa in Hong Kong and the hostess proceeded to give me a handjob without a condom. She then filled up a huge tub of water in the room and joined me in the bath. At no time was there any oral or other penetration but I am concerned tha she could have leaked some vaginal fluid or blood in the bath and I was having hemarroids at the time.

I am still within the 72 hours so am looking to we if I had a risk of any magnitude to go and get PEP.

On another site, I was told that this was no risk but wanted to get some additional advice from experts.

Please help. Thank you.

You never had an exposure and don't need nPEP let alone testing.

This was not like sharing a communal bath. I am pretty certain that the bath had been used many times before me when some men might have ejaculated in the bath or had sex with a woman in the bath.

It was an erotic bath where the girl washed me all over and was close to me but no penetration took place. I can understand that HIV is not transmitted by casual contact but this is close physical contact with the potential for body secretions to touch my hemmaroids. Am I overreacting?

You could have been swimming in cum from other guys and it would not have mattered. HIV is a very fragile virus and is not transmitted in that manner.

The only confirmed risks for the sexual transmission of HIV are unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse. As long as you always use condoms for those activities you will be well protected.

There is no need for further concern on your part nor any need for HIV testing. Get on with your life.

HIV is unable to reproduce outside its living host (unlike many bacteria or fungi, which may do so under suitable conditions), except under laboratory conditions; therefore, it does not spread or maintain infectiousness outside its host.

If that was the case that the virus cannot reproduce outside its host, how come the advice is not to share razors, toothbrushes or even a syringe sice once the needle is outside the host, you are suggesting the virus is inactive.

I am sorry this does not make sense. I know you are going to try and caution me for debating this but this oes it seem right. I think I had a real risk.

No, there's never been a case of bathtub transmission.

Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus that is primarily transmitted INSIDE the human body, as in unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse where the virus never leaves the confines of the two bodies.

Once outside the body, small changes in temperature, and pH and moisture levels all quickly damage the virus and render it unable to infect. This is why hiv cannot remain viable in bathwater. It also cannot be transmitted through objects in the environment, such as doorknobs, cups, spoons, forks, towels or whatever.

If hiv were as easily transmitted as you imagine, everyone in the world would be hiv positive by now.

You have NOT had a risk and you don't need to test. You certainly do NOT need PEP.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. IT REALLY IS THAT SIMPLE!!!

Hi everybody. I haven't heard anything from the doctor or public health which I guess is good news so far. If there was something wrong, surely they would have called me by now? I did the blood test last Tuesday. Any thoughts?

Thoughts? First of all, you never had a risk.

And we're not going to interpret your not having heard from the doctor. Why not just call him if you want to?

This is all unwarranted drama on your part over a non-risk situation.

Hi everyone. I called the doctor and my test was negative. It was the combo test. I know the CDC guidelines are to test out to 12/13 weeks but a combo test at 28 days is considered by some in the UK and other doctors as conclusive. I probably will test again for peace of mind.

My doctor told me that the test results were back after 2 days but that they don't call unless there is a problem with the result.

Thank you to the moderators and experts who helped me through this very mentally straining time.

Doesn't matter, you never had an exposure and didn't need testing.

And you need to get on with your life. All you need to do protect your self in the future in terms of HIV and sex is to always use condoms everytime for vaginal and anal intercourse. Period. It really is that simple.
