Dear Andy,
I am a male who had sexual relations with a female. I used a condom and was intact after finishing. the problem is after a few days i got herpes lesion where the condom did not protect me. Does this increase any chances of me getting hiv or is this totally irrelevent. It is said hepes increases chances of hiv, is this out of the question if condom is used.

You didn't have a risk of contracting HIV.

You did the right thing in using a condom - condoms have been proven to prevent hiv infection and so you were not at risk for hiv infection. The herpes makes no difference.

You said you got the herpes lesion where the condom did not protect you - and that's exactly what happened. Herpes is transmitted through skin to skin contact, but hiv is NOT. Hiv is transmitted through UNPROTECTED anal or vaginal intercourse where the virus never leaves the confines of the two bodies. Hiv is transmitted INSIDE the body.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED TO TEST OVER THIS PROTECTED INCIDENT, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

thank you, I was so nervous of the incident that I got an hiv test at 6 weeks and after getting negative result a felt ok. But then I read that around 5% of persons test positive after 6 weeks so I got nervous again. Even though you only suggest 3 month test i have read in other websites that with modern rapid hiv test there have never been cases of persons testing positive after 6 week negative test. Would you agree with this?

I've yet to see a six week negative turn positive between then and the three month window period, but we stick by the globally recognised three month window period for a conclusive result when there has been a risk.

Your six week negative is NOT going to change as you did NOT have a risk to begin with. You do NOT have hiv.

I had one last question. In this same incident about 2 minutes after finishing sex I took condom off with my left hand (because i knew I had small cut on right hand) and had plenty of vaginal secretions on condom. A few seconds later I washed my hand with liquid soap. The problem is i had a small cut in my right hand from earlier that day and when I washed my hand the vaginal secretions could have gotten into the cut.
I did not think of it much, but my question would be does any liquid soap kill hiv immediately?

Infection does not happen from body fluids being passed via hand or topically on the skin.

Sexual transmission of HIV happens through unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse. Those are the only confirmed means of transmission. Everything else is theoretical as far as risk is concerned.

Any fluids which may have HIV on the outside of the body are already not viable.

it just doesnt matter if soap kills hiv instantly, if it is out of body it is not viable.

I have one question for my general knowledge
Is a rapid test considered a 3rd generation test if not what is difference between a 3rd generation test and a rapid test.

To the best of my knowledge, most rapid tests are fourth generation. The only time the generation makes any difference is in the very early weeks of infection, when a newer generation may pick up antibodies a few days earlier than an older generation. The generation doesn't matter when a conclusive result is sought at three months following an actual risk.

You didn't have a risk.

thank you for your anwer Ann I know I did not have a risk in this event but just wanted to know if a rapid test is considered as accurate as elisa 4th generation. But you are saying all rapid test are fourth generation anyway.

What Ann said is that all 13 weeks all of the tests currently in use, no matter which generation, will provide an accurate result.
