My baby is finally here!
« on: June 18, 2008, 09:03:45 am »
Well, I finally went into labor Friday the 13th--I went into the hospital around 2 am.  I think the worst part was the horrible back pain and my back still hurts a bit.  Anyway, I ended up getting a C-section.  Evidently the baby was faced up instead of down like he was supposed to be.  They had me try things like getting on all fours  and going back to where my butt was in the air, I guess to try to encourage him to turn, which he didn't.  I couldn't stay on all fours for long, but it did kind of help some of the back pain--maybe because he wasn't crushing my spine as much in that position.  I also ended up having my water broken since it didn't happen on its own.  Even though I was initially concerned abot having a baby on Friday the 13th, by that time, I was ready for anything to happen to get him out.  I also progressed pretty slowly (at least to me)--they told me no epidural until I was at least 4 cm and that didn't happen until around 9am or so--I know it was during that hour since Regis and Kelly was on the television.  Well fast forward to the end of the day and I am starting to push, only I can't push.  I do know it is harder that way, but I just wasn't getting anywhere--he just wasn't decending like he should.  Eventually they started talking C-section since he wasn't coming out.  The doctor and anesthesiologist was tied up--several others had C-sections, including one woman with gigantic twins--might I add it was a busy day up on OB that day and they ended up calling someone else and also an anesthesiologist from the general surgery area--a lot of women had epidurals delayed because of the higher priority cases.  I know I attempted to push over 2 hours, but not the exact time, since I wasn't exactly paying attention to a clock.  The baby also didn't decend to the point where it would have been possible to have some assissted delivery--like vaccuum.  He just stayed too high.  At some point they said I was going to have a C-section and I just remember crying--all that work, nothing had happen, and I had a C-section anyway.  I was very disappointed, but I got over it because he finally got there.

Anyway, the official stats:
Lucas James
Born 6-14-08 at 1233 am
8 lbs 14 oz, 22 in long

Both of us came home yesterday--well he was offically released before me, but he was with me most of the time anyway.  I have been laying in my living room on my recliner and the father of the baby made sure I had books, laptop, and everything I needed nearby  and he has been a great help.  A few others have helped out as well.  The father of the baby called to make the announcements, but he told everyone they couldn't just rush in because I needed to rest, not entertain, which I am glad, since I am not quite up to that.  Lucas is a good baby--doesn't really fuss and looks around a lot and is very quiet.  He also has a clean bill of health.   I am not worried about him getting HIV because the odds are astronomical that he won't and I have maintained an undetectable viral load and he is taking is medicine just fine.  So far no bad effects that I can see.

Congrats and welcome baby Lucas!  I know you're disappointed about the mode of delivery, but at least he's here and healthy.  I was plagued by a nasty, long, face-up baby, back labor, too, so I know how you felt.  I'm glad daddy is taking good care of you and he's right, you need to rest.  There will be plenty of time to entertain later.  You just sit, relax, and love all over that baby.  You both deserve it.

WOW! what a big-assed baby! No wonder you had assisstance. No shame in that with the size of him! Here's hoping he's a little more cooperative in the coming years.

I'm glad your baby's daddy is there for you and fielding the curious masses. Rest while you can!

Congratulations on a job well-done. Hope to see some pictures of the little mite soon.  :-*

Awww congrats Coffee...I feel your pain reading your account, all that work and then a csection.

I feel kind of weird because I've had 2 and on my way to a 3rd. They have all been planned csections so I have no idea what labour is. People say I should be glad. But recovering from a section isn't easy.

With my first, I was given the option and chose a csection. I didn't tell people I was going to have a section and so lied that I actually went into labour and had an emergency. With 2nd and now 3rd, I have to have sections anyway and its not HIV related so I'm telling everyone am having a section. Lying is too difficult. You never remember the details.

Welcome baby LUcas.

Thanks for all the nice words.  Yes, he is a big baby--even I was shocked when told the weight.  While I was disappointed at having the C-section, he is very healthy and now that I think of him coming out of my vagina, maybe I did get a good deal in not ending up with a vaginal birth!  Shockingly Lucas is asleep right now, though that won't last long.  I will be very happy when he figures out days and nights and night=sleep.  The baby's father has broached the subject of moving in together, but as roommates.  We aren't together, so hopefully there wouldn't be any problems.  But it would help with expenses and since when I go back to work, I might still keep the night shift and there would be an automatic baby sitter and if I am on this shift when he starts being awake during the day and sleeping during the night, there would be someone to corral him.  It would be a bit weird if we started dating others, but who knows, everyone seems to think we will end up together again.

Congratulations Coffee. And welcome little Lucas.  Maybe its a good thing u had a c-section coz with teh size of him u might have had to be stitched up down there.  I've heard thats pretty painful and then u'd have to sit in salt so that stitches dry up withuot infection... U and Lucas' daddy moving in together does sound like a good idea, the help and company will be welcome I'm sure. and theres nothing like a baby to bring a couple closer together..

Coffee-
Congratulations! I am so happy for you that things went well.  My oldest son was 8 lbs 7 ounces and I had him vaginally with no pains meds.  I had a c-section with the trip  lets.  You did really well.  How did you feel when your milk came in?  That was really painful for me.  Having Lucas's father move in might not be a bad idea, any help you can get will just help you and the baby in the long run.
Enjoy and take lots of pics, my babies just turned 5 and it goes amazingly fast.

I am really enjoying Lucas.  He has such a sweet temperment and just takes the world in.  Plus he is getting really big.  He doesn't have a lot of hair, but what little he has looks pale blonde.  Neither of us are blonde, so I will have to remember to ask his dad if he was blonde as a child.  He kind of is like a cherub baby.  I just moved into a place with his father.  It is taking a while to get situated.  I still have a ton of boxes stacked everywhere in the garage.  Someday I will end up posting pics, but considering I still have a bunch of pictures in the camera of when I was pregnant plus from a vacation from early last year, it may be a while, lol.
