Generation Skipping

Each new generation creates their own perspective of the world in which we live, while those of us, from the prior generation, just look on with awe and wonder. I was born in 1954 and the world has sure changed. With that in mind, I'd like to hear what you think are the simple things, that this new generation will never know. I'll start with some of mine.

Ice Cream parlors and penny candy stores.

Phones with cords.

When "contact lists", quaintly known as phone numbers, were stored either in your head, or on a piece of paper.

Public pay phones.

A world with few computers and no Internet.

Black and white television.

The prize in a box of "Cracker Jacks" and the messages from Joe in Bazooka bubble gum.

Kids being able to wander their neighborhood, with the only real fears, being moving cars and mad dogs.

Purely mechanical vehicles with the highest intelligence, belonging to the driver.

Gas at 25 CENTS per gallon.

A MikeyDee's burger for 20 cents.

Boy, do I feel old. So what else might this generation be missing, in terms of experiences?

Good one. Reminds me of milk boxes and coal bins/doors and skimming the cream off a glass bottle of milk.

Also thought of Betamax and 8-track tapes. 5 1/4" floppy disks and computers that had 64kb (you read that right) of memory and a 20mb hard drive was consider as impossible to fill. Along with an amber monitor, that was one of the first IBM PC-XTs from the early 80's and it could be yours for $11,500 and yes you read that right.

Remember life before answering machines and voicemail? The phone would ring, no one would answer and you just called back later. You might not reach someone for a couple of days and it was perfectly normal. Now people freak out if they can't reach someone in a couple of hours.

Remember when people smoked cigarettes everywhere?

I was wondering if gas prices keep increasing whether there will be a return to people stealing gas out of your car.

The highlight of our Summer Vacation was going to the Lake...on family picnics....


We DROVE in our cars to those vacation spots....no motels for us..you could pull over in any wooded area off the road and go camping with a blanket spread between two cars...without five State Troopers stopping to make you move on...

And...popping Jiffy pop popcorn , a pitcher of ice tea, and the whole family sitting in front of the TV and watching...(Alanbama)...The Wizard of OZ...every summer....

Same for Capt Kirk and Spock on Star Trek....O.O   ooooohhhhh.....

Did someone mention when you had to return empty 16oz coke bottles to be cleaned and reused.  I remember thinking about all the people who had pissed in them, put cigs in them, and other nasty stuff in.  Everything came in glass--Gatorade glass bottles were dangerous.

A friend told me she told her son he was sounding like a broken record and her kid didn't understand what that meant.  Even saying a broken CD is now out. 

I still remember when every gas station pumped your gas.  I think this still happens in Oregon, because it is illegal to pump your own gas there??

When bars never checked your ID and you could get in at 16.  When you could buy your parent's smokes when you were 6 years-old.  My mom would have us run into the store and buy them.  Then, the smoking age became 16 in most states and now 18.  Well, the drinking age was 18 in many states until Reagan threatened to cut off interstate funds if states didn't raise it to 21. 

Many people use to throw their trash out the window of their cars or into rivers and lakes when fishing thinking it magically cleaned itself up.  I don't think most do this now.

I laughed so hard at this I have tears rolling down my face. I actually did this to a friend once, I was in the back seat and threw my cig out of her window in front. Couple of minutes later she was asking.."why does my back feel so warm?". She must have lent forward just as it had blown back in!

We had a "milk chute" next to the side-door on our house. It was a little door about 18"x18" square - a door on the inside and a door on the outside. The space between in the wall cavity is where the milkman (would be milkperson today!) put the bottles. My mother put a lock on the inside door after my father kept using it as a way in every time my mother locked him out while he was at the local bar. Good times. At least he brought the milk in with him when he was really late - and never once smashed a bottle!

She left them in our mother's care while she was in college, and my mother turned around and threw them all out after my sister came out as a lesbian. My mother was a bitch like that - she knew exactly what she was doing and how upset my sister would be about it.

No such division of the sexes in my grade school - I was forever getting swats for "talking back". That's what they called it, I called it "speaking my mind" according to my Constitutional rights.

My mother never ever missed Carol Burnett. My sister and I have often speculated over whether or not our mother had lesbian tendencies, hence the typical right-wing style denial and attack of gay men and women. Mother's intense love of Carol Burnett and other women celebrities fuelled our  speculation. We both loved Carol too.

I'm a Hoosier by birth too (Ft Wayne) but my parents, both Buckeyes, moved back to Ohio when I was but a toddler.

Laundry hung to dry outside in good weather and in the basement during the winter because there weren't dryers.

It's rare for folks here to have a dryer - they're much too expensive to run. In the winter, most people hang the laundry outside for a few hours, then bring it in the house to finish it off. I remember it seeming to be a real inconvenience when I first moved here, but now it's just second nature and I take pride in knowing my laundry drying isn't contributing to global warming.

My very first job was pumping gas.

No one had central air.  If you could afford a window air-conditioner, you were lucky.

We'd put a big square fan, facing out, in the upstairs hallway window and open all the bedroom windows. We were only allowed this comfort at night and only on the hottest, muggiest nights. Growing up in the Greater Cleveland area, that was most of July and August.

Speaking of hot summer nights, the front of our house faced north, towards Lake Erie. Quite often we'd sit out on the screened-in front porch and watch the thunderstorms come in off the lake. It was the coolest place in the house to be on those hot, muggy nights - in more than one respect. I miss thunderstorms - we rarely get them on the Rock.

Anyone remember chocolate and/or eggnog PDQ? I understand they no longer make it - what a loss! Do they still make Tang? It was my sister's favourite but I never really liked it much.

yes! It's an important ingredient in a favorite Christmas drink (Instant Russian Tea, although my personal recipe increases the amt of tea) that I make every year to share with my family, and to give away as gifts.

Sunday nights watching Mutual Of Omaha's Wild Kingdom and then a Disney production , this was a family tradition at my house .  

I 'member that too! Good ol' Marlin Perkins would sit in the Land Rover, while Stan would go out and get gored by some kind of large ungulate. Then he'd get in the Rover, drive somewhere else, and do it all over again...

How's about Drive In Movies? We would go in the station wagon, dad would bck into the spot, andwe would roll out our sleeping bags. We would be in out little footie pajamas and there would be a big brown paper bag with greas stains that held buttered popcorn mom made at home. Sound provided by those crappy little metal speakers on posts.

When I was little, Alfred E. Newman gave me the shivers, as an adult he gave them to me again due to the uncanny resemblance between him and President Bush II...

I think the last drive in 'picture show' I saw was a film titled The Town That Dreaded Sundown. 

Remember the only diet drinks were Tab and Fresca?  Saccharin was the only approved artificial sweetener and that aftertaste it left was god awful.

I remember seeing a movie called Buster & Billie at the Mustang Drive Inn , it showed Buster naked and he had a big ole 70's wiry fro bush going on down there so I asked my friends mom when I was gonna get a fro around my pee pee . She didn't answer me , she cranked the car and said perhaps this movie wasn't right for us ... but we did get ice cream at a drive up on the way home .

Speaking of Drive-ins....

I remember as a young kid driving with my parents past this adult bookstore in southern Indiana right off I-65.  Back then, they had an adult movie drive-in.  The fence was in really bad shape with many missing boards and the screen was kinda tall, so drivers could see the screen from the interstate.  I remember my brother and I getting all excited driving by there at night.  The bookstore is still there with the peeps and glory holes, but the drive-in is gone. 

Now, kids have to turn on their computer, wait for it to set up, and get on Explorer to find some porn.  So much work for them.  We appreciated porn more, I think.  It would be interesting to see a study about porn and kids coming of age before the internets and after.  I would also like to see a study whether there were more car crashes when that adult drive-in was open.

I couldn't help but recall my young drive in youth days.  My mum took us to a drive in outside of Columbus when we were young and took her quite a while to realize there never was going to be a "plot" to the movie.  I'm sure she thought she was going "To hell in a handbasket".  Never have figured out what that phraze meant, but am pretty sure it involves a penis.

I hated them  cassettes, when I used to make mixed-tapes to play in my Truck, and them the dam things would chew and get all twisted up in the cassette-player  and eat them up
