Rancid Fish Oil
« on: April 12, 2012, 05:43:50 pm »
I recently started taking fish oil for my slightly elevated lipids.

I opened my second bottle recently and noticed it smelled horrible. It wreaks. It is hard to explain the smell but it is not a fishy smell. It smells nothing like my first bottle did and they are the same brand.

So being curious I googled "rancid fish oil" and came up with several links about rancid fish oil and how bad it is for you, some liken it to poison. I also discovered that you can tell if your fish oil is rancid by biting into it, it is supposed to taste smooth and non fishy (which doesnt make any sense).

So I just got back from buying another bottle of fish oil, and it smells also. So now I am paranoid that I am getting nothing but bad fish oil.

So some questions for the veteran fish oil consumers amongst us (are you there Gary?)...
Has anyone ever come across rancid fish oil? Do you test your capsules to see if they are rancid? Do you refrigerate your fish oil? Any suggestions on the best brands?

I buy Spring Valley 1000mg, 200 count bottles by the twin pack.  It takes my wife and I close to 4 months to go through them.  I also keep it in the cupboard above the stove!  I just opened the bottle and it didn't smell bad..... then again, my smell bad concerning fish oil could be totally different than what you say smells bad.  I kinda like the fish smell almost to the point of arousal.....

Anyways, did you know it's also important to get the kind comprised of EPA and DHA?  If not your wasting your money and time......

Is it possible that one of the capsules in the 2nd bottle burst?

I've been taking fish oil for years, and I've never had this problem.  I buy my fish oil from Swanson Vitamins, specifically their house brand ($12.99 for 180 gelcaps of 1080 mg each, containing both EPA and DHA).  It only has a faint oily smell, not really fishy.  And it's flavored with lemon.

Where do you get Swanson? Do you order it online?

My fish oil, which is the Walgreens Brand "Finest Natural" doesnt mention anything about DHA or EPA, it just says "fish oil concentrate- 1200mg, Omega3 Fatty Acids - 600mg"

Im tired of worrying about it, I think im going to take these bottles back for a refund and get something else.

Swanson's prices are great, they ship fast, and frequently have sales.

I've been getting my fish oil from Sams Club, for quite s few years now.  It used to be a "members Mark" label, but I noticed, on the last purchased that it is now labeled
"Simply Right Wellness and Nutrition"

http://www.google.com/imgres?q=simply+right+wellness+nutrition+fish+oil&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1366&bih=626&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=w_zZh9EQRrGM2M:&imgrefurl=http://www.lexalu.com/index.php%3Fmain_page%3Dproduct_info%26products_id%3D903&docid=71qBWGEZjG-CdM&itg=1&imgurl=http://www.lexalu.com/images/australia%252520056%252520%28480x640%29.jpg&w=480&h=640&ei=HlaJT5DEMoXk0QGE2ZneCQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=234&vpy=114&dur=3370&hovh=259&hovw=194&tx=120&ty=144&sig=109289491814997145804&page=1&tbnh=129&tbnw=113&start=0&ndsp=22&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0,i:71

It is a 1400 mg dose, all natural and enteric.

Other supplemental include:

calories ---15

calories from fat--15

Total fat ---1.5 grams

cholesterol---5 mgs

fish oil concentrate--1400mg from Mackerel, sardine, and anchovy oil

Omega 3 fatty acids--900mg

EPA---647 ng

DHA--253 mg

I always make sure that I look at the expiration date.

As far as the smell.  I have noticed different smells coming from diferrent brands of fish.

The smell that comes from this brand isn't the greatest. Kind of smells chemivcal and plastic. ) It's in a plastic bottle.

To be on the safe side, you could take that back to the store, let them smell it, and exchange it for another.

Or the other option change labels. BUt in all the years that I've been taking fish oil, I've never had any rancid oil.

Also, I've never tasted the capsules to check if their rancid. I've never refrigerated any of my fish oil.  Ed and I share from the same large bottle of the fish oil, from Sams Club, never got ill or sick from it.

Just curious, what's the expiration date on the bottle, do you still have the first bottle that was OK.  Was there any change in formulation between the first bottle and the second?

You are right!  If it smells bad its bad for you!  Try a different brand from a different shop.

Apparently you wouldnt know if it was rancid unless you are testing them by biting into them...

Test your fish oil for rancidity every few days. The two easiest ways to determine if fish oil is rancid are taste and smell. Taste the oil; it should taste fresh and mild.

Rancid fish oils, like other free radicals, are harmful to your health and may cause damage to your body at a cellular level. Rancid fish oil may increase your risk of heart disease, atherosclerosis and blood clots. When you consume rancid fish oils, your body must use its stores of antioxidants such as vitamin E to neutralize the rancid oils, leaving fewer of these resources available to your body for cellular repair and disease

http://www.livestrong.com/article/410462-when-is-fish-oil-rancid/

I dont ahve the first or second bottle, I threw them away. But the new bottle I have smells bad also(maybe its just me) and has a exp date of Jun 2013. I am pretty sure all 3 bottles are the same brand and formulation. I want to try the "taste test" on them but I know I will blow chunks right now cause I am sick with flu.

When you buy fish oil pills, buy the enteric coated kind.  The capsules are thicker than your average pill therefore it takes longer to dissolve.  By the time they dissolve they have passed your stomach and moved to your intestines.  This prevents any nasty "fish burp.".

The best brand I have found (other than online) is at Costco.  Here is a link.

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?prodid=11248464

Also...you can store your fish pills in the freezer...this also extends the time it takes to dissolve and keeps them smelling fresh!

You make it sound like it's some boutique pharmacy.

You make it sound like it's some boutique pharmacy.

Really. At least step it up to GNC where you can see bodybuilders working behind the counter.

That said, my current fish oil was a stocking stuffer from my mother at Christmas so I'm sure it's from Walmart. It's Spring Valley fish oil -- twin pack for $7.45

I take two daily. If I take more than that I get diarrhea, even with the six loperamides I take. Imagine that, if you will.

But then there's always this option for $59.46. I'm tempted to buy it and do a comparison test with my lipid panels. They have EIGHT PAGES of fish oil -- how in the world is anyone supposed to know the differences in these products?

I take 6 grams of fish oil a day (that is 6,000 mgs for those who don't know how that breaks down.)

That means I take either six 1000 mg capsules or five 1,200 mg capsules each day.

I have never run across rancid fish oil.

I used to get mine at Sam's Club, but they don't carry it any longer, only some hybrid with flax oil, which doesn't work.

So, it is either Wal mart or Walgreens, cause they are cheap. When you down as much of the stuff as I do, boutique vitamins and supplements are out of the question.

HUGS,

I use bottles of Seven Seas Extra High Strength Cod Liver Oil*, keeping them fresh with a Vacu Vin Wine Saver (to keep air out and prevent rancidity).

*10ml provides 2.8g omega 3 nutrients, of which 2.3g is DHA plus EPA.
