Santa Ana Winds: QUestion for you SoCals
« on: January 10, 2007, 09:56:01 am »
A few years back the Uncle had a scare because spot showed up on  his lung xrays.  He flew to NY to a cancer specialist and after slicing and dicing, they found out it was not cancer, but was a FUNGUS growing inside his lungs.  Turns out it was some rare specimen carried through the desert by the Santa Ana's to Souther California (where he lives).  It was easily treated once identified.  So my questions is, Has anyone ever heard of something like this?  I am a little concerned because I know the Santa Ana's are back now in SoCal.

Thanks as always...
M

Rod,

Can't remember.  It was a few years back.  But googling Santa Ana Fungus got me this return:  Coccidioides immitis.  So maybe that was it?  Though I don't think that is so rare.  I know he is on a fungicide prophylactic so he should be fine...But I like to keep educated!

San Diego here:  Is this the stuff you get from dried rat droppings?  Sounds familiar.

Hey M -

Not sure if it's what you're talking about, but at least in the southwest and maybe other places there is a fungus called Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis) that can be deadly sometimes.  It is in the soil and almost everyone who spends anytime in the desert areas gets the fungus but it remains dormant usually because your body can resist it.  I don't know if they still do it, but when I was a kid we got a test for it every year in school.

People with HIV are more susceptible to it just like they are to many other problems.  Here is a link to more info if you think this might be what you're asking about.  http://www.dhpe.org/infect/valley.html

Good luck to you and your uncle.

Kevin

Kevin,

That may well be it.  I wonder if there are cases of it being trasfered via the Santa Ana's.

I am from L.A., the Santa Ana's are normal as an earthquake.  Never hear of it causing a fungus in any persons lungs.  I did drive up to Sacramento once to visit my sister, she had cats and cat boxes.  Two years later when I had xrays and a bronoscopy for PCP, cats came into question over something found in my lungs.   Having only been in her house for two days, I say cats are a greater hazard than the Santa Ana winds.  Have the best day

Histoplasmosis is a fungus prevelant in areas with bird sanctuaries... pigeons are a big carrier...people breath it in from their feces... also... hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is from rat droppings... generally people who aquire this recieve flu like symtoms ... basically their lungs fill with fluid and even a healthy person is dead within 3-4 days... very few people survive...HPS started in the south west and now its in 38  states ... when cleaning rat feces always wear a mask ... spray wet to keep the virus from infiltraiting into the air... and if its articles that can not be cleaned... burn it...

San Diego here also.  I am thinking it was "valley fever" which is out in the desert and I suppose it could come in on the Santa Ana's.....never heard of that happening though.
The difference between an overnight and a layover is luck!
