The Gates' Not Settling For Anything Less Than A Vaccine
« on: November 29, 2010, 01:25:58 am »
From ABC's "This Week", the Gates discuss giving their wealth away and the search for an HIV vaccine.  They also talk about education and poverty--both that have a serious impact on HIV/AIDS.  The entire show was about wealthy people giving their wealth away for the public good.  Warren Buffett talks about how his taxes are too low and the ways he gives his money away.  You can find his and Ted Turner's interviews on the website next to the Gates video.  I wasn't sure where to post this.  The Gates discuss HIV/AIDS and a vaccine.  Buffett and Turner talk about poverty and taxes being too low for the mega-rich.  Not taxing the wealthy fairly has a huge impact on how we fund public health, research, etc.  I believe all these people have pledged to give something like 80-90% of their wealth away.

If you want to skip the education discussion and jump to the HIV/AIDS/Vaccine part, jump to minute 4:00

I can remember a party I went to early 90s, San Francisco where it was explained to me that it was perfectly possible to not pay any tax if one used trust funds /  charity status / companies / off shore banking ect to channel money through. Ditto UK.

Wasn't it Buffet who stated that his children will get basically nothing of his multi billion estate, that charities would get it? Something akin to he started with nothing and they should too.  Got to admire that.

This is what Gates has said:

. . . as for the inheritance of his children, Gates said: "I will give the kids some money but not a meaningful percentage. Setting the number so that they need to work but they feel reasonably taken care of is hard to figure out."

I read somewhere else that the amount his kids will get is rumored to be about $10 million each. Considering he is worth about $58 billion it's very little money but it's still not bad.

Thx Inch. Yeah, 1o million is definitly nothing to sneeze at and any "meaningful percentage" of 58 billion is alot of clams.

Good shock or bad shock??  :P

My son already knows that everything gets left to his younger siblings (the cats) and, as their caregiver, he gets a stipend until they die of natural causes. Then, it's all his.  ;)

Good for the Gates and good for us!
Let's not be blindsided by a few philanthropic billionaires, however, when the county's budget crunch could be lessoned by taxing the millions of multi-millionaires at some sort of reasonable, equitable rate.  Go after mutual fund managers first.  Thats outright theft.
Oh, and not fighting futile wars.
