Stung by a Scorpion
« on: June 18, 2007, 01:11:17 am »
It's days like this I miss New York LoL.
I rolled over in bed, put my arm under my pillow, and OUCH!!!!!!! A 4 inch scorpion stung the crap out of my forearm... It felt like 20 bee stings all at once. My arm is numb, and still tingles a bit.

I called Poisen Control told them I was poz etc...They said the pain may move all over by body and last a few days. It is very soar to the touch now, (14 hours...still hurts)

If anyone has any advice, I'm all ears....

Yikes! Scorpions are not fun. Matty the Damned lives in the land of bitey stingy things and understands that scorpion stings, whilst very painful (as you've discovered), are rarely dangerous.

The trick is to apply cool compresses to the outraged site and take paracetamol (acetaminophen ie tylenol) as needed for the pain. Don't use ibuprofen or aspirin.

Obviously seek medical attention if you have trouble breathing.

In future you may wish to avoid sleeping with scorpions.

Hi Jeffrey

I agree with Matty, the only thing you can do is apply an ice pack every now and again..keep it on for about 15 mins at a time, it should help, also Benadryl will help to reduce the swelling.

I'm assuming since it has been quite a while now since you were bitten that you haven't experienced any nausea or vomiting..but if you do at any stage then get yourself to a Doctor.

I have never been bitten by a scorpion but I was bitten by a Red Back Spider in Australia...and I remember that hurt like hell so I hope the pain subsides soon...let us know how you get on...and check your bed before getting into it, scorpions do not make good bed fellows.... ;)

I symphathize with you, Jeffrey.  It's definitely "scorpion time" here in
my part of Texas, and since I live in the middle of nowhere, I think
they view my house as a refuge.  This is the time of year when I
do a nightly walkthrough of my house, looking for scorpions clinging
to the ceiling.  There's almost always 2 or 3.... :(

I've been stung by a scorpion while sleeping, and it's no fun (not to
mention ruining your night's sleep).  The freakiest experience I had
was getting stung while drying off after a shower -- I hadn't realized
that a scorpion was nestled into my nice, fresh towel!  So I was
essentially rubbing the damn thing all over me.  Aaaargh!

I think everyone else here covered the bases on treatment:  Cool
compresses on the affected areas; an analgesic for the pain; and
benadryl to combat itching and allergic reaction.  If you experience
excessive swelling or trouble breathing, it could be anaphylactic
shock, so call 911 immediately.

I'd also like to offer a kiss to help make it better!   :-*

Cheers,

Henry

Jeff love,

Ouch!. We normally don't have scorpions around here, but I do come across them when camping and have had to shake them out of the sleeping bag.

Persistent little buggers, aren't they.

Since others already gave good advice, I'll just send a kiss to make it better.  :-*

That's it. I'm freaking out.  :o :o :o

You're brave. I would have screamed and run naked to the nearest hospital yelling that I was going to die, and probably die by hitting the night bus.

It sounds like scorpions are about as common there as our 'water bugs' (a.k.a. Palmetto Bugs) are here.  At least water bugs are smaller and don't sting!

I knew an entymologist once who raised them as hobby.  They were all black and gross and... ew.  Anyway, once he talked me into holding one.. claiming that if I did it right I wouldn't get stung.  Yeah right..  Clearly I did it wrong.  So, I totally sympathize.

Hi All,
Well I survived the night last night. The pain is all gone today. But damn, it really hurt all day yesterday.

I have learned allot about scorpions since I have lived in AZ. For those of you who may not know this, the creepy bastards can slip through the width of a credit card. So it is essential to seal off windows and doors with something. I have caulked all openings in my garage, I actually saw a big one crawl through the side molding and disappear into my wall!

Anyway, thanks everyone for the kisses and well wishes. Today I'm good, and better off now that I know I can survive a scorpion attack!

Oh, and they are BLIND!!! So really the only way to get stung is to ...well...put your arm on one, or step on it bear foot. I must ask God: WHY did You make a blind, ugly poisonous creature?????

Love ya Guys and gals! Thank you Again for the concern!

We are too cold for scorpions where I live. The winters are just too much for them.

I do have a crawlspace filled with black widow spiders, but that's another story. Sometimes we come across tarantulas here. They like the eastern part of the state better, but once in a while they show up.

I do find snakes here, usually just bull snakes, occasionnally rattlers.

Mostly I just have bats. They love to come in for a visit and then get tangled in the draperies. Poor things.

I have spent many a night chasing a bat out of the house.

Ah, life in the desert.

HUGS,

Mark

No, not really a cave, just in the boonies. My folks had a house a few miles east of where I live now they used only in the summer. It was quite nice, near a large lake and on a river.

Anyway, one spring we were sitting at folks' place and I look down to see a 6-foot snake crawl across the living room floor. I was a bit startled at first, but realized it was only a bull snake.

It ended up being a pet. We named it Herman. He was great. Unlike Rod, I can't tolerate mice and Herman loved to rid us of the pests.

I guess that's how he ended up growing to 6 feet long. I used to love to get his shedded skin and terrorize my sister. (I know, I was mean).

I guess the difference is mice in this area carry deadly diseases. I live in the area where the Hantavirus first started killing off folks. Most of those who died lived in this area.

I also live in an area where Bubonic plague is endemic. We have already had our first plague death this year, a little boy.

So, I will take my bats, snakes and tarantulas over mice any day.

HUGS,

Mark

There is one in my house I tried to catch...

...How do you catch scorpions?

Milker.

Actually catching scorpions can be somewhat interesting. One way that I am aware of is to wait until dusk (they are nocturnal) and then get out a flashlight with a black-light bulb. Scorpions (at least here in AZ where jeffreyj and I live) fluoresce and so show up well under black-light. Once located, collect the scorpions using long forceps or tongs and keep them in a seal-able, sturdy container. As these wonderful creatures are such a benefit to our environment please consider collecting and releasing the scorpions into the natural desert rather than killing them. If collected scorpions are to be destroyed, crush the individuals then use a flyswatter or long forceps to remove the bodies. Chemical spraying during the day is largely ineffectual. Another common practice is to fry them with a stun gun or electric wand.
Let us cavort like the Greeks of old! You know the ones I mean.

If collected scorpions are to be destroyed, crush the individuals then use a flyswatter or long forceps to remove the bodies. Chemical spraying during the day is largely ineffectual. Another common practice is to fry them with a stun gun or electric wand.

Better yet, keep them alive and Fed Ex them to your ex boyfriend!

I am going to invest in a black light (memories of the late 60's and those cool glow posters!)

Marc, with all do respect, when I see a scorpion in my house I step on it and quick. Sorry, but the desert will survive.

I killed one in my garage and just as my luck would have it, it was carrying several babies. I had noticed 4 tiny little babies the next day in my kitchen.

But damn, Mark,,freak in Bats????  damn THAT IS SICK.

Mark, I doubt we will ever have a AMC now!!! Lil.

You're a better man than I am Jeff! A few years ago when I was living in Tucson, I came home to my apartment where my ex (at that time bf) and another friend were just having a ball getting baked in the comfort of our home when i spied one mondo-big scorp sidling up the wall. Of course when I mentioned it to everyone they busted out laughing until they looked up and saw it scaling the vaulted ceiling. Needless to say I promptly crushed it into the most disgusting mess that i could... with a 7' staff. THERE'S NO WAY that i was getting any closer.  EWwwwww! Called the apt managers immediately. Mind you this was on the second floor of a two story complex.
