anyone in school?
« on: June 02, 2011, 08:42:08 am »
i just got accepted into an mba program . wow...

and this one is number 2 and i am fully unconditionally enrolled.

and i feel totally lost and confused :). i feel like im getting nowhere fast. like, there are these things im supposed to do, but i'm not exactly sure who came up with the todo list and why i so quickly subscribed to it.

there is the realtor thing, the guy thing, that gym thing, a dr's appt or two and something about meeting a financial advisor all wrapped in a big ball of apathy. or was it pot.

and then its back to work on tuesday ... fuck.

best,
d

I started back to school last fall working on a graduate program in computer science.  I graduated in '90 and haven't been since... talk about a shock!  I'm older than some of my professors, all the students (so far), etc.  It can be hard at first, but I've adjusted pretty well.  I got an A and a B+ in my first two classes, but I'm not sure about the current one - Java (programming).  Good luck with it all!

that is awesome!

i am trying a distance learning program and am a little worried. i have a bit of a procrastination issue and have not had formal education outside of a classroom.

but, hey, hear's to a shot. there are a lot of pros to the 2 cons i've identified :).

what are you going to do when you finish?

   Congrats D on being accepted!

Regarding school, I've had a little wrench thrown into my plans, as we've discussed, but also have other   options.

I'm back at it.  Anatomy & Physiology and Engineering are no longer sufficient in my field.  I'm back getting a Computer Science degree on top of my existing education.  On-line schools are wonderful for those that can't make it to campus on a regular basis.

Congrats, D.

Try not to procrastinate, that works ok while working on an undergrad degree, but it can create a big a mess while you're doing a master's of any sort or a PhD.  Been there.

I'm still working on my doctorate in History.  Feels like I've been doing this for way too long.  My over-full time job used to get in the way (I had to travel more than one should while taking seminars and trying to research for my slightly ambitious thesis), and then there was a bit of a "don't give a fuck about completing this degree anymore" mentality for about a year after teh AIDS came into my life.   This fall and going forward however I'm returning to school full-time (and hopefully will be getting the funding to do the on-site research for my dissertation topic in about a year and a half or two at the latest).

Learning  is always an exciting thing.

Congrats.

I can give you some suggestions for Distance Learning, since I struggled through one program myself a few years ago.

My suggestions are obvious I guess but one gets into trouble if one doesnt follow them.

1) Put everything in a calendar and schedule all the work you have to do, a few times each semester.
2) Make nice with your professors and advisor, they will help you if there is a relationship.
3) Do as little as possible - don't be heroic academically or intellectually, if you are working for money, you don't have the time.  I mean you'll still have to work hard and apply your brain.  But there is no pay off for brilliance. The pay off is the degree. It sounds cynical but that's my take on it.

Maybe you should cut down on the pot if it makes you foggy.

Needless to say, clean out a place at home that will be for study only and try not to have it in your bedroom, of course.

PS - I wish I had Ritalin a few years ago when I was doing this.  Several weeks on it now and already I feel like signing up for another post-grad.  Where as during the winter, I couldn't juggle it all anymore.

words of wisdom. I will have to print that out. i have a 2 bedroom and live by myself. i can turn one room into a makeshift study. i will use a calendar and stick to it. and no over achieving!

that is so awesome, thank you.

words of wisdom. I will have to print that out. i have a 2 bedroom and live by myself. i can turn one room into a makeshift study. i will use a calendar and stick to it. and no over achieving!

that is so awesome, thank you.

best,
d

You could budget your money better if you didn't waste money on a 2 bedroom when you're a single person.

my 2 bedroom is 800, the most i could save is 50-150 a month. ive only been single here like 2 years. i also like to think ill be able to rent the other room cutting my rent in 1/2. but ive been hesitant to do that but i will consider it more seriously moving forward.

with a busy schedule roommates can be a hassle.

Congrats on your acceptance to the MBA program -
I tried the online thing - but it didn't work for me; however, some people swear by it.

I finally ended taking classes for mine at FIU - the classroom setting worked better for me (it was two nights a week and one weekend a month)

I'm sure you will do great!

As far as the roommate, sometimes it actually works better if you have a busy schedule and aren't hardly ever around --- before moving to North Miami, I had three different roommates when I had my condo in Hollywood - it worked best when they were either on the go or I was - I really wasn't looking for a friend, just a roommate.

All the best with your new adventures!

thanks phil. i will keep that in mind.

because the last grad school didnt work out i figured i try this one. at the school i was going to i need 3 more prequalifications. the online school is more flexible, offers the degree i want and is a good deal less expensive.

i have a person who is enrolled there now and i plan on us building a great study partnership.

Congrats on your MBA acceptance!!  I just finished my MBA a year ago in May 2010.  I did not start college until the ripe, old age of 38.  It took me 5-1/2 years to get my BA in Computer Science, and another 2-1/2 years to get my MBA in Management.  After I finished my MBA I swore I would never take another class as long as I live!!  Well, as the old adage goes, 'Never Say Never'!  In January of this year I was accepted into another Masters program.  I just found my evenings to be too boring so I decided to get another degree.  I'm working on a Master of Science in Health Informatics.  It is an online program, which is very different from my BA and MBA.  It has taken me a while to get used to doing all the work online.  It's strange not being able to raise my hand and ask questions!

A couple of suggestions...

- Make sure you allot time every day/evening to spend going over the material.
- Make sure you get to know some of the other students because they will be a big help when you don't understand certain material.  (It's been hell in my current program because I'm going in not knowing anything about the health care industry)
- Try to get your assignments completed before the due date...it will give you plenty of time to go over your stuff before you send it in.  I made the mistake of waiting until the last minute a few times in the first semester and ended up working until very late at night finishing up.

Good luck with your MBA program!  It will be well worth it when you are finished!

Jim

thank you. i have been going back and forth over my acceptance and have to admit i am a bit intimidated by it all and don't know if i can pull all my shit together to move forward with this program.

i don't know if i can handle not being successful at another thing at this point in my life and i feel like im running around in circles. i also don't want to pick up more school debt. i just finished talking to both of my student loan orgs and those were very depressing conversations about my debt.

(a few paragraphs of me griping have been deleted  :P)

oh well.

Hi next2u

Congratulations on your MBA course. After diagnosis, the floor fell out of pretty much everything for me career wise (some of that, but not all, being HIV related), and I'm now doing a part-time drudge job to pay the bills. Of late, however, I've been toying with the idea of doing another PhD.

If you do take the MBA forward, I look forward to reading your posts about how it's going.

Kind regards,

M

mark,

did you say another phD? wow....

my next question, did you get your degree in a field to advance your career or was it more passion driven?

best,
d

Hi next2u

I've always been terminally incapable of studying anything which didn't engage me mind and heart, and nothing I have studied formally has been with a view to a subsequent career, although careers have developed from them. This (potential) move is, I think, an attempt on my part to rebuild my shattered life with the help of something which has, in the past, always given me joy.

You should always study for fun, I think: let's know how it works out for you.

 :)

i would love to study for fun but i can't afford to at this time ($$$$). my job will pay for my mba and it will help me continue in my current field and secure employment (hopefully) in other fields if needed. because this is not a labor of love i am a bit reluctant to throw myself into it.

i did enjoy my ba and my undergrad work for my mba wasnt too torturous but there were enough classes that what utterly mind numbing.... like that supply chain management class.

I know; when I said one should always study for fun, I was being a bit facetious - sorry. But the thought of having to study something intelligent, like "supply chain management ", would frighten the cr*p out of me.  :D

Anyway, I do hope it works out for you.

Congrats D.  You have a lot on your plate (job, money, school, men, HIV etc).  Take each decision one step at a time and don't worry about the big picture.  I find trying to think too much about my life can feel overwhelming.  You'll find your own path.

It may not be the shortest or easiest way, but that's alright.

i am able to complete one class (marketing) just fine. the work is a bit boring but whatever. the other class (ethics) i loathe. it is christian ethics! every paragraph has to do with god and good christian morality. i am about to fail that class cause I cannot force myself through the material :/. uggh, might as well put my nose to the grindstone and make it through it. ill have to take the fucking course eventually.

btw, this is not meant to offend any christians. my mom and most my family believe and practice. i just didnt realize how entrenched it would be at this school and find reading about ethics from a christian stand point not something i want to do after a 9 hour workday. let me be a little clearer - it's not reading about christian ethics that is so difficult, it's reading about christian ethics from a subjective (christian) view point.

I'm finishing up my masters, working on my thesis now.  Should be done by the end of the year.

Don't fret too much about the christian influence of your school.  I went to a catholic college in my undergrad (jesuit specifically) and they were awesome.  The school and the jesuit teachings ended up influencing me in more ways than I could have predicted.

And that is the value o education, learning and being influenced by ideas you weren interested in or aware of prior to going to school.

It's strange not being able to raise my hand and ask questions!

The extracted quote above is so true as I also found it strange not to be able to raise my hand for notice from the professor.

I completed my Master of Education June 2010 online.  I almost became addicted to all the activities required when attending virtual classes. That, in addition to work, kept me very busy.

Congratulations on your acceptance to the MBA program!
