PLEASE just be aware that this episode is even more likely than the last to slap you in the face with some hard realities .. and that if you are feeling a little fragile, it may be best left for another day.

I don’t mind admitting that it had me choking back the tears a few times.

Which parts made you cried Votz?

Excellent program. Chances are that I will see another Tinnanman Square type massacre in my life in Asian before anyone of them can produce 2 hours of TV on HIV/AIDS like this. Sad. Now I can concentrate on preparing to receive my first set of test results tomorrow!

Both the haemophiliac and the guy who was resistant to all twenty-four drugs really got to me.

The Uganda segments just got me really angry.

Other parts made me immensely proud of (and grateful for) the BBC, public service broadcasting, the NHS in the UK .. and the great team at my hospital (Chelsea and Westminster).

The story of the haemophiliac is life affirming and sad at the same time..

I know that hospital well.. my best friend's boyfriend was treated there. They packed and returned to London after the boyfriend found out he was infected. They settled in a place in Chelsea not far from the hospital. I visited them twice and both times I lived in their place. I must have gone with them like 3 times for the boyfriend's appointments with the doctors. Sadly, the boyfriend took his own life because of depression less than half a year after the diagnosis and at a time his CD4 count was jumping from less than 100 to above 400.

Although I was crying within the first 15 mins. and had to quit watching for a little while (so I went and took my morning meds ;)), thanks for the links. I was glad to see this segment dis the "hiv-lite", "chronic manageable disease" idea some. Even though it's turning more that way every day, for many people it still is a terrible burden.

When my late partner Randy was diagnosed (in the hospital), he was already too sick for the only med at that time (AZT). They were really only treating his thrush when he passed away in May 94. I was the "lucky" one to be on AZT for a while; although I had to quit it, since it seemed to be killing me faster than Randy was dying. It's been close to 15 yrs now, and I've been through a lot of meds (from 38 pills a day, now down to 7).

My current doctor has doctors interning through his office. Just recently (on the way home from learning that my VL has jumped up some), my current partner Jim (hiv-), who goes into the exam room with me on my appointments, told me how much it bothers him to hear my doctor explaining to these interns how I am on a "salvage regimen". However, since I survived being hospitalized with PCP (an amazing ten years ago!), I don't care what the doctor calls it. I'm just happy to be on a regimen that is working (the VL was back down on this recent visit), even if it does make me puke a dozen times a month.

The Uganda segment was especially sad seeing how our American "faith based initiatives" are doing such damage.  Abstinence-only teaching hasn't prevented millions of unexpected pregnancies, what makes they think it'll prevent the spread of HIV? Hopefully someday America will get religion out of our government, and use science to make decisions and policies.

Thanks again for those links, so us in the States could watch. ;) ;D

Thankyou to the person who put this on originally - it is a wonderful program and hopefully will be seen by many people - especially those people who hand out the aid money.

I was glad that I watched the second part on the net, which meant I could pause it, go away and take a breather before continuing.

I thought that it presented a more complex picture of how we live with HIV.

The Ugandan sections were deeply moving.  We have may have many complaints about the service that we get in the UK, but at the very least, access to basic medical care and drugs is not something we are fighting for.

The issue of stigma was interesting.  On the one hand, Stephen Fry said that for many the fear of stigma may be worse that the reality, but it showed how it exerts itself on many of our lives.

I hope that as many people as possible get a chance to see the films.
