A Little Piss Never Hurt Anyone
« on: April 18, 2014, 02:12:18 am »
Portland Oregon is draining millions of gallons from their reservoir, because a teen pissed in it.  These people need a mental health evaluation.  How many piss in the reservoir, who aren't caught?  How many birds swim, piss, and shit in it?  If he had HIV, I guess he'd be heading to prison and the reservoir would be blown up.

They say they take pride in their water and claim it is the best.  They say it must be drained, because the water in the reservoir has already been treated and goes directly to tap.  What's up with that?  Our water comes from the Ohio River to our reservoir for holding.  Then, it is sent for cleaning and to tap.  As I understand our system, once it is cleaned, it is not exposed to open areas, where someone could piss in it or birds could swim, shit, and piss in it.  With their system, it seems it could be a target for somene dumping something really serious into it.  But, they freaked out over human piss, when it must be full of animal waste, acid rain, cigarette butts, trash that blows in, etc.  Since they have this kind of system, I'm not sure why they freaked.  They could just add a little more chorine, if the human piss over animal piss bothers them so much.  Personally, I wouldn't want to drink water that is left in an open reservoir after cleaning, but that's me.  I would be more concerned about all the rats falling in.

Ted the articles I saw said the water officials acknowledged that the piss caused no danger if it was in the water and probably never made it into the water anyway. They said draining the reservoir was a gesture to the psychological revulsion or outrage citizens might feel. They said Portland has plenty of water, so its not a travesty, but yes its a waste.  Also they are currently building covered reservoirs.

atlanta's main, and oldest, water treatment facility has a series of large pools/ponds, each containing water at a different stage of the treatment process. over the years these ponds have become very popular with migratory birds whose flight path is interrupted by the airport. it has always been a running question, is all that bird crap in the later pools is essentially untreated a risk? waiting to go into the system. place used to be almost park like, people would walk out there. now at least they have a fence, prevent those evil terrorists from backing a truck up and pouring god knows what in. still seems like a possible plague nightmare. norwalk bird flu water borne illness for all!

so who's going to be the first to admit a watersports kink  8)

Apparently it costs $35,000 to drain and replace this water. Of course animals are urinating and defecating in it all the time but the knowledge that a specific man urinated in your drinking water is too much for some people to handle. As a member on The Verge commented "If the bird poops and no one is around to hear it – Has it pooped at all?"  ;D

Someone else commented "covered reservoirs actually breed more bacterial growth and contamination and part of the reason Portland’s have remained open for so long is the exceptionally clean source water (Bull Run). That and open reservoirs means Portland has cleaner water with less chlorine treatment than most of the country. Millions of dollars are going to be spent for additional water treatment and possibly UV lighting to purify the water to current standards after they are covered."

i backpack, for weeks a stretch sometimes. on a forum i am a member of, we have some hot button topics just like we do here. one of those topics is water treatment; do you, if so chemical, filter, or purifier? how small and light are you wiling to go at your comfort level. in the past few years there have been bad norovirus outbreaks on the the appalachian trail, and so become a more heated topic.

a manufacturer of water filters had a hilarious series of advertisements. the first picture, with no caption or advertising, early in a magazine was always two beautiful people, in the mountains, drinking from a babbling brook or roaring river. the second, much later in the magazine, was a different animal everytime, "meanwhile, upstream" while pissing in the water. the moose one is legendary, it was so... shocking, repulsive, yellow, so much piss. with the company logo in the corner of the page. it said it all.

Its sad that the state of California is in one of the worst droughts in decades and Portland is going to flush away 38 million gallons of clean, drinkable water for appearance sake.

Having a Urine infection off 6 days now only just getting treatment I find I have a complete breakdown off humour regarding any group off people who would drain a whole reservoir due to Public opinion , what wavy backbones they must all have , must take them ages to walk anywhere.

I will say that DanO just moved to Portland and within a week we have this...I don't know if there is a connection, just sayin.

Ok, the reservoir in question is just MERE blocks from my house (no, it wasn't me).  Those reservoirs have been there for over 100 years and are in an urban park. You can only imagine what has gone on in them over the years - some time ago they caught two people skinny dipping in there.

This issue is getting significantly more press because there is currently a campaign to remove the water bureau from a particular city councillor's control and the opposition is making a big deal about the decision to flush, but then again they would have made a big deal about the decision if they didn't flush.  The politicians need to either inflame or defend themselves, the local press can't help themselves with this kind of stuff, and you all get the over spray.

Seattle and Portland have a few similarities...we used to have the same open water reservoirs just like Portland.  After 9/11 they got worried that they would be a prime target for terrorism.  Pollute the drinking water and you can cause havoc.  Within a year or so they were all covered and they built parks on top of them.  I'm surprised Portland didn't do the same thing.

Days off?  What's that?  I actually like my job and a little bit of stress is is somethign I kind of thrive on.

For Portland, though, I can see the reaction for this 'event'.  It's a completely foreign land.  Everyone seems to be fit and actually USE their gym memberships. Pretty people everywhere. It seems as if everyone has a bicycle and uses it, along with street cars, intercity trains and busses. Down the street there is a bike shop and the one in the window was $5,000! You know they take their bicycles seriously when they can put that on display and no one walks by and laughs. They have these alien contraptions outside, too, called "RECYCLING" that people actually USE!  Everything is recycled - EVERYTHING!  I've already heard the contention on the water bill, which is used to fund a lot of the social programs and the 'incident' is much talked about and the look on the faces of the speakers is one of revulsion mixed with portents of death due to urine!

Back in Milwaukee we even had "plus-sized" manniquins at some of the department stores.  No such thing here!  I had to go to the only Wal-Mart I could find the other day just to get a taste of home.  It didn't dissappoint! There was even someone on a scooter pulling a shopping cart behind them. That takes me back. I guess that's where all the out-of-state people congregate.

Our lake is manmade to both support the former Erie Canal and provide a water table for the growing community.  It's the main source of water for the surrounding areas.

I always had a bit of a sex fetish while swimming at night.  I guess 1000's of people have sampled my juices.  :)

Got me to thinking, was that a risk and should I disclose?

Just recalled the scene from Caddyshack where the turd was floating.  Sure made me laugh.

I've been debating on capping off the well and hooking into our recently installed public water system.  Now I'm wondering why bother?  Already have a nice filtering and softening system.  And it costs around $2,000 to tap in with a recurring monthly bill.

I'll try to find a link to our new water tower....I swear it looks like a giant dildo.  My brother lives on the highest hill in the area and they placed it within view of their front porch.  He absolutely hates looking at it.

the first 2 photos in this link are our previous little prick design.
