(San Francisco, California) It may be possible to battle AIDS into a low-rate of infection, but it will take a long time and elimination of the disease seems unlikely, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease said Saturday.

It's a disease transmitted by sexual activity, which is a fundamental component of human behavior, "so it isn't going to be easy to shut it off," Fauci said at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

A quarter-century after doctors first began recording cases of the illness, AIDS gets fewer headlines now that drugs are available to keep it in check in infected people, but the drugs don't eliminate the virus.

And I wished for guidance, and I wished for peace
I could see the lightning; somewhere in the east
And I wished for affection, and I wished for calm
As I lay there - Nervous in the light of dawn

Regardless of who he is, or his position, it's still speculation. He's using the base of knowledge that exists today, but even that base is changing rapidly. And most important, no one can predict what discoveries can be made that will change that statement. Case in point, cervical cancer. I am sure that right up to the time that vaccine was developed, there was also someone saying that a vaccine for it was way off. So, no one should let this bring them down. Things are moving rapidly on the research front, and I for one feel very, very hopeful for the future. This year alone, we are seeing the beginning of two promising trials, Dr. Kang's vaccine, and the New Zealand PEHRG214 antibody vaccine. So we may be seeing great things coming from these. Then you have the PD1 and B12 discoveries and you can see that things are really moving along. J.
