B-12 patch. Have you try ?
« on: July 03, 2008, 12:21:34 pm »
Hi,

went to the pharmacy today, and found these B-12 patch.
Each patch contains:

Vitamin B-12 (Cyanocobalamin) 1000 mcg
Selenium (Sodium Selenite) 200 mcg

Direction of use:
Use patch 1x per week for 24h period.
For best absorption, the patch can be placed behind the ear lobe on the upper part of the neck.

The patches are round, white skin colored.
Each box (around 20$) contains 4 patches (1 month).

Nano trial:

A small clinical trial was conducted in August 2003. Six volunteers ( 4 male and 2 female between 20-48) had a baseline blood sample. A B12 Patch was placed behind the ear of each volunteer after the baseline sample was taken. A series of samples were taken at 1,2,4,6 and 8 hours after the baseline. All samples were analyzed for serum B12 levels at an independent laboratory. The average serum level increased from 721 to 1,407 picograms per millileter. Most physicians are concerned about B12 deficiency if blood tests indicate levels below 400 pg/ml.

Initial clinical testing demonstrates the B12 Patch doubled vitamin B12 serum levels within 8 hours of patch application. Other forms of vitamin B12 supplementation are very inefficient in getting B12 into the blood stream.

Question: Have you try ? Better than a B12 shot ?

John

Did you ask your doctor to measure your blood B12 and selenium levels ?
From what I have read, the l-selenomethionine form of selenium is very absorbable.
And indeed, my tests confirmed that - after one year of oral supplementation at 200 mcg and a few months at 275 mcg, my blood selenium level was a little elevated. I had to go back down to 200mcg. You definitely don't need a patch to get your selenium absorbed.

B12 is a bit of a different story. It is hard to absorb orally. That's why they give you such high doses in the B12 oral supplements - the same 1000mcg as in your patch, even though the RDA is around 2.5 mcg. Most of the oral B12 goes to waste, and a small part gets absorbed, but it's enough. I have been taking 1000 mcg of the cyanocobalamin form of B12. I had my blood B12 level measured. Again, it was high, but not outside a safe range. Supposedly the methylcobalamin form is better absorbed, but it also costs way more, so it is not worth getting it unless you find that the your level is still low while taking the other form.

In the end it comes down to whichever you prefer. I know for me oral supplementation is much more convenient :)

Hi madbrain,

I think you made great recommendations ! In particular to measure the blood level of B12 and selenium !

Thanks !

Note
Regarding the use of a patch, I read somewhere that oral vitamins give more work to the liver, while direct delivery to the bloodstream (without first going to the liver) is better, as it cause less work to the liver.
Is it correct ?

You are welcome.  Regarding your question, I think it would be best to ask a doctor. Even if the oral pills go through the liver, it's not necessarily a problem. Your doctor is probably already monitoring your liver regularly, and more often if you are on HAART, and so should be able to advise you if it's OK to take oral B12 supplements.
