Who Is (Was) Asymptomatic?
« on: May 10, 2007, 10:26:31 am »
I know some members are like myself, not yet on meds.  I have supposedly "good" numbers (600cd4, 10,000vl) but have been plagued with what I view as skin symptoms (eczema etc).  Yet some people here have no HIV related symptoms, and it sounds as though some who are now on meds went into double digit cd4 without having an idea they were HIV+.  Interested in hearing everyone's experiences.

I'm not understanding you.  Why would someone be on meds for HIV if they don't even know they HAVE HIV?

Sorry, I should have phrased it better I guess.  I'm interested in who had no symptoms before their diagnosis, or who has been living with an HIV+ diagnosis with absolutely no symptoms.

I have no symptoms, but i've been recently diagnosed, so I wouldn't be surprised if I get some kind of symptom later. So far I'm feeling great, very energized, and horny as hell. I got syphilis phase 2 & hiv seroconversion at the same time, so I don't know what gave me this constant low fever for a month, until one day I reached 102 and the next day everything was back to normal. Could have been seroconversion or syphilis or both.

I seroconverted in the winter of '82/'83, and I had no symptoms when I was officially diagnosed in '94 (with a CD4 of 79 and ratio of 4%).  I felt great, in fact.

I knew in my head I was positive, but there was something about the passing of time that was encouraging to me.  I kept thinking "the longer I'm healthy, the better the sign that perhaps I've dodged the bullet..."  Denial at it's finest, I suppose.

I was quite healthy for another six years or so.

Things have sort of gone to hell since then, but still nothing life-threatening.

My health issues now all seem to be related to meds and a reconstituted immune system that isn't quite sure what to do with itself.

I had and have nto had any symptoms prior to diagnosis.  It was part of a yearly physical.  I didn't even have a seroconversion "event".  I am however, on meds since my CD4s declined to a low enough level.  Now they're back up and I am undectectable.

So, I have not yet had any HIV related illness.

I'm not on meds but frankly I have no clue if I have no symptoms.

I don't remember ever having seasonal allergies until after I converted....but then again that was not too long after 9/11 and in nyc I find a lot of people who developed allergies at the same time for the first time.  Of course it could just be a natural development as can happen to anyone.

I have had 3 major sinus infections since converting and I never had them before - again I can not say with certainty that HIV is the cause.

I've noticed some slight fat loss in areas - nothing dramatic and I doubt anyone but me has noticed - but can't say if it is HIV or age.

I can say that I have had no major illnesses as I approach my 5 year mark of infection (Memorial day weekend) but my tcells have been steadily dropping...so maybe it's just a matter of time.

Iggy, I had the same thing happen to me.  Allergies (mild compared to other people) when I'd never had them, sinus stuff when I'd never had them.  I guess it was about 6 years after diagnosis and lasting a couple of years.  Then they just seemed to lessen and disappear again.  It was quite odd.  Oh, and I was living in NYC at the time though I doubt that had anything to do with it as they cleared up while I was still there too.

Hope yours do the same.

I`ve had three/four separated situations during thee 6/8 yrs ( to my presumption) that I remember :
1.Body rash (mild ) 6 years ago went to the best University Hospital for Infectious diseases > Doc told me that it is probably a measles  :o  :P ( although I`ve had them as a kid) ..........I was suspecting trichinosis ( from unclean pork stakes )
2.A very big allergenic response to a bee sting after one day : half of my thigh was red as a Communism , and a doc was really scared ( got shot of analgetic) , but that was 8 years ago..............
3.Long lasting  loose stoles ( for about two months ) , get rid of them at last by antibiotics , 7 years ago
4.Long lasting pneumonia after my Achilles tendon operation.Resolved by a strong antibiotic. , 6 years ago................
So I`m really confused..........................

I seroconverted in 1985, but had not symptoms until 1996 which were sinus related but not serious.  I followed my numbers, but was in a very stressful job, had just been through a major brush  fire, and within three months my numbers plummeted and I was hospitalized with PCP.

The difficulty with PCP, is that the onset is slow and mimics other bronchial problems, really didn't feel bad until right before I was admitted. At admission my cd 4 was low and viral load very high, so  although I was following my numbers the added stress seemed to bring on the disease.  I started meds at that time.

Matty the Damned had an asymptomatic seroconversion. Or at least the symptoms were so mild he didn't notice them. He was diagnosed following a routine HIV antibody test.

About 12 months later I developed severe candida, had horrible lymphodenopathy, night-sweats and the like. I was promptly diagnosed with AIDS and put on combination therapy at that time. Efavirenz/3TC/Tenofovir if memory serves me right.

Since my diagnosis I've had fairly symptomatic HIV disease. Fungal infections, skin rashes and so on.

I was diagnosed in 1990, did not get on meds until 1998, then my viral load is 100,000 and 400 cd4 and asymptomatic except for a little of skin rash. Today still no symptoms of any sort, undetectable vl and around 900 cd4 mark.

I went to 42 cd4 without KS, PCP, thrush, etc. but what I *did* experience was extreme weakness (e.g. the inability to even lift a fork or spoon) and rapid weight loss (without the ability to regain any weight no matter how much food I ate). Does that count?

I went in to double digit CD4's before being diagnosed with HIV and AIDS.  I was busy studying at Uni through my entire infection, oblivious to the fact I even had HIV, let alone AIDS.  I wasn't sick, and didn't take a single day off Uni.  It wasnt until my CD4's got to around 35, at the end of Uni, that I got sick and sent to hospital with a slew of OIs and diagnosed.

Today my counts are around 200 and I'm asymptomatic... again.

My experience was much the same except for the fact that I probably spent about 8 months on a downward spiral until diagnosis.  I seroconverted sometime in 86 and didn't get diagnosed until November 1999. That was my initial positive test, then I got an AIDS diagnosis in January when I found out that I had pneumonia, had lost a lot of weight, had a nasty case of esophageal candiasis.   I thought the demands of a new job and the stress were getting to me, in those months before the diagnosis.  Fortunately, I never spent a day in the hospital and have gotten my t-cells up from a nadir of 22 to 350-ish (not counting that test before last that was 650, which was an obvious outlier).

eczema is not a directly related condition to hiv.

it can and does occur on it's own in 'normal', healthy people.

I doubt it has any correlation to your hiv based upon your lab numbers.

I'm sure what the person is self-diagnosing as eczema is more likely seborrheic dermatitis.  Maybe not, but I've been to plenty of dermatologists over the years who have diagnosed what others have labeled one as the other, the dermatitis is seen quite often in HIV patients.

Yes, that's been exactly it.  Though my dermatologist said eczema, and yet does rounds on the AIDS ward, so he must know the difference.  And it seems docs like to say "oh, it has nothing to do with your HIV" but one can't help but wonder.   Does HIV take hold of an existing weakness? I've always had sensitive skin, but now it seems in hyperdrive with the rashes, flushing and the fungal issues Matty mentioned thrown in.

My childhood allergies also seem to have come back with a vengeance, plus some new ones thrown in, like allergic reactions to alcohol which really sucks.

I have to admit, I'm sort of envying those who were able to dodge the symptoms for so long.

No issues until I ended up in the hospital with MAC, PCP and a cd4 of 22.  Looking back the symptoms where there, loose stools, weird body rashes sometimes, inability to keep weigh on, weight loss, constant sinus issues, etc.  Funny how one can rationalize when one does not want to admit the truth.  CD4 of 505 now and I feel like I am 10 years younger .... of course, now I am chubby and cannot lose weight to save my life ..... oh well1

I showed no symptoms except for seborrheic dermatitis and night sweats.  I've always had sinus and allergy issues, so that was nothing new.  I don't even remember feeling bad during the conversion phase, whenever that occurred (3-4 years ago, maybe?).  The only serious 'symptom' was PCP.  Since I started meds, there haven't been any symptoms of any sort.

Ha! I was diagnosed with a CD4 of 1!

Plus fatigue, anemia, weight loss, and an oral thrush. My docs say that I picked up the bug about 10 years earlier, perhaps even longer. Don't know. I can't remember any seroconversion illness nor did I fell sick during all those years. Once I started the meds, symptoms cleared up very quickly. I'm asymptomatic now with CD4 70+.

Well, like I said I've been to several different dermatologists about these things.  Some have been good, some not.  Also this was back in the 90's when they were just beginning to grasp such crap so that was part of the issue.  From what I recall seborrhoeic dermatitis is a large reaction to some kind of yeast that is found on everyone, but keep in mind that your skin is your largest body organ technically so it's logical that it's easily affected by a suppressed immune system.  I'm sure some people are more prone to it than others too.   In my experience dermatology is also 3 parts voodoo so you'll see varying diagnosis from different people... you should REALLY try and seek out one that has seen a decent amount of HIV infected people if at all possible.  Right now my HIV specialist has no issues giving me what he thinks I need, and frankly I trust him for basic dermatitis than going to a specialist, but that's because he has a really large practice.

But in my decade dealing with this skin issue off and on, I've found the best preventative thing to not be any medical based salves (I save those for flare ups) but a good skin cleanser with glycolic acid.  I was told this trick by a long-term survivor (RIP) many years ago and it really does work.  Sometimes you have to play around and find the right one, I guess it depends how much glycolic acid is in it.  The acid simply strips off a thin layer of dead skin from your body, which is where this yeast resides and is activated.  You have to use it regularly though.  Feel free to PM me if you need a brand name recommendation.

My seroconversion was asymptomatic so I was surprised when my PCP called to tell me my routine check up came positive for hiv. My partner then tested positive with 2 digit cd4's and 6 digit vl's. He started on sustiva/truvada yet 10 months after that he contracted toxoplasmosis with hemiplegia. I'm glad I continue to be asymptomatic so I could take care of him.

Hi

I remember the exact moment I was infected, but I never felt any symptoms.  My only HIV related visit to the emergency room was caused by an allergic reaction to Zerit.   Once the doctors figured out the right combo for me, I haven't had any HIV related illness.  I feel very fortunate for that.
I know I was infected in 1997 and I didn't test poz until six months later.  I didn't get my first labs until 2000 and my VL was in the millions and CD4 was 268, which really shocked me because I didn't feel any symptoms since I first tested poz.
10yrs later my VL is <50 and CD4 764 and very healthy!
The only thing I can't remember having before HIV is all the allergies I have now and some type of eczema on the elbows, anyone else?

My partner was diagnosed with HIV in 2006 - we don't know exactly when he was infected but it was almost certainly in 1994.

He was completely asymptomatic for about 10 years (although he had a very bad reaction to a cat scratch a few years ago which, with hindsight, might have been a clue).

His first symptoms were those of HIV related encephalopathy and (again with hindsight) started to show up in 2004, although they were misdiagnosed as depression for almost 2 years.
