Title: OMG! LUMBAH PUNKCHA!
Post by: Matty the Damned on May 24, 2011, 04:31:13 pm
'sup cocksuckers,

So last week I visited the Frau and she decided that I might have some neurological issues (hyper-reflexive, pupils won't dilate, pronounced weakness in my left leg, occasional blindness, blah blah) that need closer attention.

So she's handed me over to some Infectious Diseases Doctor who is gonna give me an MRI and various other tests including a LUMBAR PUNCTURE!!

Fuckin' epic, right?  ;D

This is all happening today.

I have to travel about two hours east on the train to the hospital where they do this shit, but the train ticket only costs me $2.50 each way. Also all the medical stuff is 100% free (including the hospital stay if needed) AND I get picked up by an AIDS community worker at the station to avoid the inconvenience of changing trains to get to the hospital.

Socialised medicine is such a burden. I long to be free! :(

Anyways, I imagine this stuff will involve lots of sitting around waiting. As I'll have my trusty mobile internets with me I might update you from time to time.

There could even be pictars!  ;)

I am on the train!

We're currently making a stately progress through the upper mountains which is a Fashionable Place to live. Consequently lots of wannabe hipsters, dumpy women in pashminas and fey middle aged men in berets are getting on board.

There is a distinct whiff of patchouli and pretentiousness in the air.

Some woman is singing Islands in the Stream in the most irritating off key tone.

Some hippy fuckwit is prattling on about acupuncture. ::)

Here is a pictar of the back of his head:

Well this is starting to get tedious.

I've just been admitted to the infectious diseases ward by a registrar (Rahul -- cute!). It's a four bed ward and my cell mates are all women!

Truly I am living the dream of every 30 something gay man, stuck in an airless ward with three diseased bints.

Apparently one of them has a broken back. Unfortunately she can still talk. It seems she can't peeeeeeeeeeee!

Women are such dramah queens, honestly. ::)

Prior to this Rahul examined me at considerable length over in the AIDS clinic. He has lovely warm hands.

Anyhoo, teh LP has been postponed in favour of a spine/brain MRI because they now doubt my issues are ID related. I get to see a neurologist at some point.

I could be here for a week, or so they keep saying.

Good times, eh? ;D

The bright spot is he is only sharing with 3 women..it could have been worse, it could have been a 6 bed ward.

Hoping for some good results, keep us posted.

They've now gotten a social worker of some sort in to deal with Mrs Broken Back across the way. Personally I would have just drugged the wench, but she's calmed the fuck down now so it's all good.

This is boring. There's no way I'm laying around here for a week. If they don't have this sorted by Friday morning I'm gonna fucking jet.

Ah hospital farts and manners how the colonies are so truly misrepresented in the Mother country.

Congratulations on not becoming more psycho at the smell off patchouli oil , there are crimes unsolved in the West off the Mother country due to that effluence,  remember to pack a delightful nosegay for your return home , perhaps essence off Rahul.

Did you pack a weeks worth off Hospital costumes?

Nevermind there is probably a grant to buy suitable couture for those found stranded, far from ones valet.

Do take care

Well Enid, Marge and I have had just about enuff of Madame Broken Back. She carried on like a busted arse all night. Singing out like a motherfucker. I was sorely tempted smother the old moll.

She's lying there now, snoring her fucking head off.

To be honest Enid doesn't mind that much seeing as she's as deaf as buggery, but frankly Margaret and I have had it up to pussy's bow.

Hopefully I get the MRI today. Also a nerve conduction test and a lower body CT.

I gotta say, the girls have it pretty good. Enid and Marge don't even have to get up to go the brasco. They wear those adult nappy things and are able to relax in bed whilst they shit themselves and then have some poor nurse attend to the mess.

In my opinion, that's living! :)

Your words are like poetry - I felt like I was caught up in a fine romance novel - (an excerpt of this soon to be published, I'm sure, work appears below:

Through her open gown, she was seducing me as I lay in my hospital bed -
Marge is a fine looking dowager. Her vent is lushly thatched with noble silver locks -
Seeing it caused an immediate warmth to begin forming in my loins - over the muffled sounds of Enid's snoring - I committed myself to having Marge - it was going to be a night of romance, a night of passion.... under the cool Australian moon.

When I asked if he was any good, I was told "Whoever performs the procedure will be competent."

Matty-

Hope the LP goes smoothly, and I echo the senitments of he others here: We will require photographic evidence showing all.

Plus, if you handle it like a big boy, then maybe Marge will let you get a closer look at her lushly thatched vent with it's noble silver locks.....

She let me read her paper this afternoon so I reckon once lights go out she'll let me chuck one up her. ;D

Just had the MRI. Brain and spine. 1 hour and 10 minutes long.

Anybody who had an MRI will know what I mean when I say that it was a deeply unpleasant experience.

Suffice to say that there will be no LP this afternoon. I've just informed the infectious disease registrar of this and he's not real pleased.

But fuck that. I have reached my limit of medical stuff for this week.

I'm going home. This afternoon. :)

Sorry doll, but fuck this shit. I've got limits and they have been reached.

This is essentially a fuss for doctors. Basically it seems like a pissing match beween infectious diseases on the one hand and neurology on the other as to who owns me.

This is a teaching hospital and is infested with students. Since Wednesday I've been examined by more than 15 doctors and I've had e-fucking-nuff.

I'm not being difficult, I just can't take anymore. After the MRI there is no way I'm letting anyone stick anything in my spine today.

We can do that next week, but now I need to go home.

And I intend to do just that.

Alright man - well you are an adult and can make your own decisions ---- I just get overly concerned and protective these days.  Three weeks before my dad passed he had went to the ER - my mother drove him there - he waited in the ER for 5 hours - got tired of waiting and went home ---- 3 weeks later the ambulance took him to the ER ---- and the rest is already known --- so, this is a sensitive area for me... I know it is tiring, frustrating, etc. but if you leave and things get worse - I just hope you get your ass back there.....I really wish you would just stay.  I don't ever think - especially since recent events in my family - that it is a good idea to leave AMA (against medical advice) - My one friend went to a teaching hospital and had a similar experience of being seen by to many people and going through the same old same old over and over just to be a teaching activity ---- I told him to speak up ---- the next time he went, he made it clear that he was not going to consent to being seen by a bunch of students and used as a "lesson" or teachable moment - they had to honor his request and he no longer had an entire classroom of future doctors using him as a "homework assignment."

Just please take care of yourself --- maybe get some rest and stay and get the LP done tomorrow..... that way you don't have to make the journey back and you can find out whats up and get on with things....

BTW, if Jan finds out --- she has a broom and can probably get there even quicker then a plane will get me there.....

Love you Matty!!!!

It's all good babe! The ID consultant has just discharged me. My MRI was clear so that's good.

But I have received a diagnosis. Apparently I have a very rare degenerative neurological condition called hereditary spastic paraplegia. It's genetic and it causes progressive weakness and spacity in the lower limbs. It can affect other things too.

Apparently I already have the tell tale gait associated with this disease as well as other key symptoms. I've been referred to a consultant neurologist for assessment. There is no cure and I have to have a genetic test to determine precisely which form of HSP I have. Treatment options are limited.

Anyway this is entirely unrelated to AIDS so this thread can be moved to Orf Torpic, Goderators willing.

Heh. Well I'm at home. :)

I should point out that this condition is not fatal. For the last 10 days I've been somewhat concerned that I may have developed something really horrible like motor neurone disease or MS.

But I've not.

There's no doubt this disease is debilitating but it is what it is. At the very worst I'll end up in a wheel chair.

Which, when you consider the possibilities, isn't so bad. Imagine it! Matty on Wheels! Roller Matteh!

Whatever.

The big concern for me is the hereditary aspect. It's usually a dominant genetic condition, meaning that only one parent has to have the gene to pass it on and there is a 50% chance that a child will inherit it.

Also if you have a dominant gene for an illness, you will develop that illness at some point.

Recessive conditions are different. They require both parents to have the faulty gene to pass it on, and then only 25% of offspring have that disease with another 25% being asymptomatic carriers.

Noting that my brother and his wife have an 18 month old son with a daughter on the way, there is considerable angst in my clan regarding this issue. We now have to, as a family, undergo genetic counselling.

But such is the stuff of life. :)

In all honesty, this is really way down on my Index of Give-A-Fuck. Having AIDS is a much bigger deal and moreover I still am far better off than many people I know.

That said, the love I get from y'all is greatly appreciated. This thread kept me going through a few stressful days and I won't ever forget that.

Fondles,

Matty the Damned

I'm sorry to hear this news.

On the family issues, if it is a dominant gene, then did one of your parents have this too? Would how it affected them give you some better idea of what to expect?

Of course, if it is due to a recessive gene, then your brother is less likely to also be affected, and his children even less so.

Thanks Urban,

I've looked briefly at some of the scientific literature on HSP. It seems that 70%-80% of sufferers are affected by a dominant gene. And talking on the telephone with my father today, it seems possible that he has some mild form of this condition.

It is possible to be quite mildly affected and not really notice anything is wrong.

Given that HSP is quite rare, the likelihood of both my parents having the recessive gene (as carriers or afflicted) seems improbable. In very rare cases it's possible to have a "sporadic" form of the disease, where a mutation arises in an individual and there is no familial history.

The only reason I've been diagnosed is Frau Eva spotted various neurological abnormalities in a routine examination. I thought I might have a spot of mild PN (I've got some numbness in my big toes) and Betty encouraged me to raise it with Eva.

For quite a while I've noticed that my left leg feels "heavy" when I walk. Also when I walk for any reasonable distance my calf muscles and occasionally my thighs feel painful and stiff afterwards. I simply put this down to being out of shape, but now I know it's the spasticity at work.

I went for a long walk today and now my legs feel like they're made of stone. At least they match my heart. :)

When I underwent neurological examination it was discovered that I cannot stand on my toes or rock back on my heels without losing balance and falling over. Similarly I cannot stand still with my eyes closed for more than 10 seconds before I sway to the left and fall over. Also I cannot crouch, I become unbalanced and fall.

I fail other standard neuro tests as well involving hand eye coordination, leg strength and tone, dorsiflexion etc.

I had no idea that these things were happening. So the real heroes in this tale are Miss Betty for making me raise the issue with Eva and Eva for taking the time to do a thorough neurological exam and spotting the problems.

Darling-

Having suffered a lumbar punction in 2002 (without a doubt the single worst year of my life), I can assure you that you're damned lucky to have avoided the procedure. Mine was done in one of those filthy, horrifying rooms in the ER where they keep you until you're deemed either ready for upstairs or seen fit to return home.

In reality, they calmed me down with a Valium drip and massive amounts of local anesthetic, so the actual, physical pain was only about 30% of what you might have imagined (though 30% was still a tough row to hoe). The entire exercise lasted, perhaps, 45 minutes. The hardest part was the excruciating blow-by-blow that the doctor announced throughout the procedure, as if I really needed to know precisely what he was doing at precisely that second.

The oddest thing was the funny little spigot used to withdraw the spinal fluid itself: it looked like a child's "so you wanna be a plumber" toy. My biggest regret was that they hadn't performed a viral load on the fluid removed.

The absolute worst part (aside from my ex Kenny's presence throughout the procedure, in mask, gloves and a breathing mask), was the blinding headache I suffered afterward. It made a migraine seem trifling in comparison. As I recall, it lasted for more than a day.

Not having found whatever horror they'd anticipated, they sent me home several hours later that night. The bright spot there was that Kenny was forced to sleep on the couch, so I had a blessed night of peace and (painful) tranquility (if such a thing is possible).

You ducked a bullet. Everything about the experience was painful, nerve-wracking and utterly devoid of both dignity and glamour.

Yours-
B

You ducked a bullet. Everything about the experience was painful, nerve-wracking and utterly devoid of both dignity and glamour.

Yours-
B

Indeed my pet.

I had an LP some years back and it was ghastly. Not something I wanted to go through again if it could be avoided.

That said if neurology requires me to have one, I will. I just couldn't do it straight after the MRI.

As you know even a white woman has her limits. :)

I don't think you'll be a spazzy gimp and if you are we still love you and at least you have socialist medicine to partake of.

Smooches.
