Recent encounter
« on: February 22, 2012, 02:09:22 pm »
Hi there, I recently had an encounter with an HIV positive man (didn't know until after).

We kissed, sucked each other for a little bit (no ejaculatin) and jerked off. No sex. I know the chances of me getting HIV from giving him head is low but I found out after that I was positive for throat gonorrhoea. I didn't think I mad any symptoms at the time but I have heard that this can substantially increase my chances of contracting HIV this way.

I tested negative for HIV the day after but now obviously have to wait a while before knowing definitively. It is driving me crazy. Any advice?

At no time did you put yourself at risk of contracting HIV.

The only confirmed risks for the sexual transmission of HIV are unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse. The risk as far as is oral is basically only "theoretical."

You can get tested for your peace of mind. I expect you will test negative.

Thanks, you think getting the test is necessary then? I think it would make me feel better, I'm just concerned about the gonorrhoea thing enhancing any possible risk? I gess even doubling a low risk is still a low risk? Hope so anyway!

You would only have been more vulnerable to HIV if you had an active case of gonorrhea prior to when you had unprotected intercourse with the guy. It would have meant your immune system was down and that's what makes the difference.

If you mean you acquire gono from this guy then no, that in itself would not have made you more vulnerable.

As for testing that is strictly up to you. If it's going to weigh on your mind then I suggest getting tested at 6 weeks. At that point all but the smallest number of those who are infected will test positive. You have to decide if you need the comfort of a negative result to move on from this incident.

Getting the positive throat gonorrhoea test the day after this incident, I would presume I got it before this guy and it was active. By unprotected intercourse do you mean anal or can oral with throat gonorrhoea be a worrying risk? Thanks for your help

Please read the replies that you have been given. Saliva contains over a dozen different enzymes and proteins that inhibits HIV transmission.

HIV is transmitted by;
Unprotected penetrative anal and/or vaginal sex
Sharing works with other IV drug abusers
Mother to child

Unprotected intercourse means either vaginal or anal intercourse without using a condom.

Like Rod I don't see any cause for concern about HIV in relation to this incident. Getting tested would be simply to collect a negative result for your peace of mind.

Thanks. Your words are honestly so comforting.

I'm driving myself mad with research into this and I think that without the throat gonorrhoea I wouldn't be at all concerned. I read that this infection causes a recruitment of CD4 cells to the throat and that is what enhances the chances of infection with HIV. What are your thoughts? I know there was no ejaculation but it doesn't make me feel better. I'm worried my circumstances will make me the exception to the rule...

Do you have any tips on staying sane through the window period. I wish it was 6 weeks and I knew already.

You did not have a risk for HIV. Do yourself a big favor and lay off all this unwarranted drama. As I have said to you previously your getting tested is only for your peace of mind. You did not have a risk for HIV. Period.

Worried,

You can stay sane while you wait for your peace of mind test by staying off hiv-related websites. Including - but not limited to - this one.

In addition, inasmuch as you  are unnecessarily worried about getting HIV from this guy, it appears that you DID expose him to gonorrhea if you sucked on him. You might want to give him a heads up.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

Yeah of course I let him know.

My 4 week test result came back negative. Hope it continues. The mind can be your worst enemy eh? I am feeling a lot happier though!
