Zimbabwe's forgotten children, struggling to survive

Zimbabwe, when I was growing up there, was the breadbasket of Africa and had one of the best education systems in Africa if not the world.

The healthcare system was great, too.

For a child born in apartheid-era South Africa, as I was, it was a land of opportunity. After my mother moved to Rhodesia, I received a first-class education, and graduated from university in post-independence Zimbabwe.

It is startling how quickly a society can fall apart.

My film, Zimbabwe's Forgotten Children, follows the stories of a number of children struggling to survive in the country today.

Zimbabwe has become a very hard place to be poor, and poverty is ugly. Conspicuous consumerism is very evident, and greed is also very visible.

I shot the film undercover, after getting a permit to make another film, about my childhood and how it has shaped me.

It is a shame indeed, when the jubilant people celebrated their independence from white colonialism in 1980 I am sure their dreams did not include the horrors the Mugabe regime has bestowed upon them.

I don't know how true it is, but one of my friends told me the story of how Bob Marley spent $200,000 of his own money to perform for the people on Independence day, only to be horrified by the brutality the citizens were being subjected to outside the palace's gates.  Evidently he refused to perform for Mugabe and was essentially shunned, but performed for the people the following day.

This is the performance from that day:

It is a crime against humanity what mugabe is doing. Our Zuma is in the UK he thinks sanctions against Zim should be uplifted but we here in south africa are paying their electricity, Mugabe comes to South Africa for his monthly injections and medications paid by the south african tax payer. apartheid was gone before the eighties, racisizm is still very much part of the south african people and this said being reversed, wealth distribution with some leaders here sitting with millions in their bank accounts while the people in rural areas have no water. sithole most likely never experienced the apartheid era but has made a big thing about it.

maybe if one has a look sithole is one of the people living in luxury here in south africa but is quick to slam everything on apartheid like most of them do, we have a sex addict for president who has 20 children and writes it to his culture which is not so the only one that is allowed to have more than one wife is the Zulu king Zweletini.

yet poverty in this country is on the uprise as i live in south africa was born in this country in 1972 and will most likely die here as well,

Has your film been shown in the US? Is it possible to see it? If you're able to share that information with us, it could help to educate us further.
