Ritalin - does a mind good?
« on: March 24, 2011, 03:14:35 pm »
Anyone have any experience taking Ritalin?

My shrink gave a bunch of tests today.  I've been off SSRI for a bit and shrink says I'm not depressed but have some lifestyle and professional functioning that might improve with Ritalin.

Your experiences? Thanks!

Ritalin has always seemed very Valley of the Dolls to me.  If you end up like Neely O'Hara you'll also need some downers for bedtime, and thus the circle is complete.  Later, rinse repeat (daily).

I'm sure for some people ritalin works fine, or they'd not dole it out.  I guess I'd just be cautious.  I'm not sure what " lifestyle and professional functioning" means but maybe I shouldn't.

Well I dont want to sparkle sparkle sparkle like Neely.  That's not a pretty picture!  But maybe one sparkle!

So far anything she has thrown at me has worked so I'm willing to give it a try. The issue is gross disorganisation procrastination, and lack of focus.  None of this was a problem before I broke down during my break up.  I think I fried quite a few circuits.  I'm going to run it by my new HIV doc next Friday and see what he thinks.

One added sparkle would be a good thing. Valley of the Dolls, no thanks. Scary.

Anyone have any experience taking Ritalin?

My shrink gave a bunch of tests today.  I've been off SSRI for a bit and shrink says I'm not depressed but have some lifestyle and professional functioning that might improve with Ritalin.

Your experiences? Thanks!

I have been using Ritalin for about 4 years and it really helps me in a number of ways.  I take various depression medications, which make me tired and foggy mentally.  The Ritalin helps me to regain a feeling of being alert, but most importantly, it increases my mental acuity.  I no longer walk around in a fog, often forgetting things, or simply being unable to concentrate for any extended period of time.  I use a 20mg SR in the morning, with the option of another 10mg for mid-afternoon.

I find that the drug does not give me any type of "speed" feel, instead I find myself alert and able to function much more effectively. My guess would be this added acuity is why your doctor is suggesting the drug. Given what you describe, you may find that Ritalin (Methylphendiate) can greatly improve how you feel, without you having to go to the Valley of the Dolls.
