worrying for nothing?
« on: February 15, 2010, 09:20:54 pm »
Hi everyone,

Thanks again for the great resource and taking the time to answer what are mainly unwarranted fears.

3 weeks ago I was fooling around with a girl of unknown status that I'm dating. We were getting ready to have sex and she was lying on her stomach on the bed. I was lying on top of her back and rubbing my penis up and down in between her legs against her vagina (basically the old hot dog in a bun trick). This lasted for a couple of minutes and when I started feeling her getting really wet, we stopped. I don't believe that there was any penetration, and at the very lest I definitely know that there wasn't any deep penetration, but the head of my penis was wet with vaginal fluid. Because of this, I'm unsure if that means I dipped in very slightly or if that was just from rubbing. We then had protected sex with a condom.

Two days ago (3 weeks later) I woke up sick and feeling like a train wreck with flu symptoms - fatigue, general achiness/uncomfortable, no appetite, mild headache, and light sensitivity and eye pain when I looked around. I basically slept the whole day on and off on the couch. No congestion, no rash, no sore throat, no alarming lymph nodes. I sure felt like I had a fever the first day as I had chills, but didn't have any sweats like you normally would with a fever. I didn't have access to a thermometer, but that night I was able to take my temperature and it was normal. I've checked a number of times since and my temperature has been normal. Today is the 3rd day of symptoms and I woke up feeling pretty awful still, but now that it's evening I'm just about feeling normal.

I'm worrying out of my mind here and I wish I could put it aside, but it's hard when I'm feeling like this.

What I'm wondering is:

1) Since I did get a fair amount of vaginal fluid on the head of my penis, what is the risk level of this potential "exposure" - is it something that I should be worried about?

2) Do the symptoms sound like ARS? Would ARS normally have a prolonged fever present the whole time that you are feeling unwell? And would ARS normally last longer than 2 and 3/4 days? What confuses me is that it's definitely a flu-like set of symptoms, but I've had no chest congestion which is normally found with the flu.

cheers and thanks in advance!

Thanks for answering, RapidRod... I'll chalk it up to a flu virus that I must have picked up at - I've been really rundown for the past 2 weeks that I'm sure I was a sitting duck to get sick. I'll test in a month just to ease my mind, but I'll do my best to not stress about it.

cheers and I hope that you're doing well.

HIV is a fragile virus. Sexually it requires the kind of receptive setting which unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse provide in order to be transmitted. Rubbing, no matter how wet it gets, is not that kind of a risk.

If you decide to test for peace of mind I certainly expect the result to be negative.

Cheers.
