Reminding friend to take meds
« on: August 14, 2011, 03:47:49 pm »
Hi,

I have a really good friend who is HIV+. When he has been out for a drink I sometimes remind him to take his meds. Is this something that would get on your nerves or would you see it as a caring gesture?

He has been positive for about 20 years but admits he misses the occasional dose. I worry but don't want to be a pain.

Thank you.

Ellie

Have you asked him directly?

No, I haven't. Perhaps I should...

P.S. V sorry for multiple posts! Not sure what happened there. Please can someone delete the duplicates?

There's something tech-whacky going on with the forums -- it's not you -- and someone will tend to the duplicates if necessary.

I went back to your posts of more than a year ago, and I'm going to assume this is the same friend about whom you wondered if you should inquire about his blood test results.  Same person?

Here's what I think. He's managed to stay alive for twenty years post-HIV and part of staying alive is quality of life. Part of quality of life is having friends who let you be yourself with a stupid virus.

Yep, he misses the occasional dose. So do I and I'll bet so do most everyone who is, was, or will be on HIV meds. Life gets in the way. Or you fall asleep. Or you have beer.

You're worried, he's not. So, keep on being the friend you are and if he asks you to remind him, do it. Otherwise, tip a glass and enjoy the friendship. You're giving him tremendous medicine -- the kind you cannot prescribe or buy.

Oh, thank you so much. What a lovely reply. Really good advice too. Yes, it is the same mate. I think the world of him. And yes, I can be a real worry wort.

You're welcome, Ellie. Every HIV positive person should have a friend or five like you. Em
