China touts success with first Aids vaccine

August 21, 2006

China said on Saturday that initial test results of its first Aids vaccine showed it could protect people against the HIV virus.

None of the participants in the clinical trial's first phase showed severe adverse reactions after 180 days and some showed immunity to the HIV-1 virus 15 days after receiving the vaccine, the State Food and Drug Administration said.

"Initially, this indicates the vaccine is effective in stimulating the body's immunity," the administration said in a statement on its website.

Researchers were still analysing the outcome of the initial trial before deciding whether further tests would be carried out, it said.

Kong Wei, the research team leader from Jilin University, told China Daily the initial results were "truly inspiring" although he said it was still too early to claim success.

The first phase tests began in March last year in southwestern China's Guangxi region, with 49 healthy men and women aged between 18-50 participating, the newspaper said.

The Ministry of Science and Technology said another 800 volunteers, including those from high-risk groups, would be needed for the second and third phases of the trial, the report added.

However, testing to ensure the vaccine's safety and effectiveness could take years.

China started its own research into an Aids vaccine in 2003 and has already invested into projects for the treatment and prevention of the disease, China Daily said.

Around 650,000 people in China - or 0.05 percent of its 1,3 billion population - have the HIV virus, but the rate of infections is rising rapidly.

In 2006, 70 000 Chinese contracted the virus, according to official estimates, equivalent to 192 per day. The government and outside experts predict there could be 1,5 million cases by 2010. - Sapa-AFP

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2007-12/04/content_7199321.htm

i found this on google by searching about a week ago
i was going to post on it

i feel there is a very very good chance upward of 70% that china will come up with a earth shaking breakthru on aids research, for many socio economic reasons having to do with science, population size intelligence, support of govt, prestige of a discovery or vaccine for the society, they are being trained via internet tv by lectures from the top universities from usa england oxford etc , their minds are less cluttered with usa pop culture etc

anyway the big news of this discovery above is a new new concept called
vaccine has a replicative vector

the new vaccine has a replicative vector, meaning it is designed to kill the HIV virus by replicating itself.

Early trials on mice and monkeys indicate the vaccine is safe and effective in stimulating the immunity of cells and body fluids.

"The results of the first-phase trial are expected to come out in about two months," Shao said.

In August, 2006, the country's first homemade AIDS vaccine, jointly created by Changchun Baike Pharmaceutical Company and Jilin University Vaccine Research Center, successfully passed the first phase of clinical trials. tatistics from CAS show that up until August 2006, there have been 120 AIDS vaccine tests on humans throughout the world.      An estimated 700,000 people are believed to be infected with HIV/AIDS in China, according to new figures released by the government.

this high number is another reason why the chinese will find a solution a vaccine for therapy treatment before the usa

could i should say

anyway

gotta run

my bet is nobel prize for china for this or one of a hundred other things they are working on in hiv science

I guess I was just bored and I started reading through some old posts and found this to be kind of eye opening. The big news of this discovery above is a new new concept the vaccine has a replicative vector, meaning it is designed to kill the HIV virus by replicating itself.  The same thing that KP-1461 is supposed to do. I guess I found that kind of interesting that more than one group of people are thinking the same way

Yes! China is where the hope is, I think. With such a big population base and so many smart people, they have to stumble upon something soon. Most importantly China has a centralized health care system so they share information and focus the best minds and investments on several key directions. not like western world different labs repeat the same tests over and over again and people hide info from each other hoping to gain the biggest profit.

Yes, some of them are really smart. I have a chinese co-worker who came from China when she was 12, and now she speaks and writes my mother tongue better than me >:(.

And also, considering the way human rights are regarded in China, I would not be surprised if, instead of monkeys, they start using humans to test the efficiency of their vaccines. They might start giving the opportunity to all those people awaiting execution to take part "voluntarily" in vaccine experiments. This would surely speed up the process of finding an efficient vaccine.

We need to be a bit wary, not because of Chinese intelligence, but their version of the FDA was a joke.

Due to corruption, many many thousands of "drugs" were approved for human consumption, of course, many of them are really just acts of fraud. I believe that some in the ministry have even been sentenced to death due to their lapse in judgment.

just sayin!

The PRC executes more people than all the other death penalty nations on earth combined. Notably, executions in the PRC are carried out with refreshing rapidity. People sentenced to death in the China have seven days to appeal their sentence. Should their appeal be rejected, they're doomed.

Appeals are uniformly rejected, following which condemned prisoners are executed via firing squad, generally within a matter of months

The death penalty does not apply for any offence in Hong Kong or Macau.

As brutal as this system is it is nonetheless an appalling calumny to suggest that condemned prisoners (or anyone else for that matter) in the PRC would be subjected to forced medical experiments. Those who would make such allegations should present evidence of their claims.

Suppose a nice doctor approach inmates on death roll, say: here is a deal if you get the HIV vaccine, we change your sentence from immediate death to death but after two years (it was a sentence in china before not sure whether it's still there; it usually changes to life sentence after the 2 years is up) or life sentence. The inmate doesn't need to get hiv injection, just testing on the vaccine. I am pretty sure lots of inmates will take this deal.

Don't get me wrong I love my country but the party in charge right now is brutal and corrupted.

Edit to delete hateful thoughts and add: I didn't mean I think they are carrying forced medical experiment in there. Above is just my speculation there is no proof whatsoever and I hope I am totally wrong no matter how much I want some kind of cure come out somewhere.
