Welcome to Do I Have HIV?

Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Vaginal Fluids and a hand job

Greetings,

I scratched my arm the other day while working.  There was very little blood but a bit of skin was peeled off.  Can I get infected with HIV with this kind of wound if it comes in contact with infected blood?

No, you won't become infected in that manner.

HIV is a fragile virus and is not easily transmitted. It has to have a receptive setting like the inside of a vagina or anus. Please read our lesson on Transmission. There's a link to it in the Welcome thread which opens this section.

You are worrying needlessly. No risk. Period.

Thanks, Andy.  Sorry, but one last follow-up question.  It is my understanding that an open wound can be a risk of HIV infection. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)  Under what circumstances does this happen?  I mean, does it depend on the size or depth of the wound, and/or the amount of infected blood that enters the wound?

Ginza,

It would have to be a very substantial wound. Cuts and scratches really don't pose a great risk. HIV is primarily sexually transmitted. I agree with Andy 100%, this is not an HIV situation.

Hi! I need to ask something.  I just went to a massage parlor and had a hand job from the masseuse.  Before she started the hand job, she touched her vagina.  I knew she was wet because I touched her vagina too.  Obviously, she would then have vaginal fluids in her hand. My question is, would I be in any danger of being infected with HIV if I had a hand job from a woman who's hand had vaginal fluid on it?

Absolutely not a risk. HIV needs a much more hospitable environment than the one provided by a handjob to be transmitted. There's never been a confirmed case of transmission via a handjob and you aren't going to make history by becoming the first.

Of equal importance is that it is the fluids in the cervical area which potentially carry HIV, not those present at the vaginal lips area.

Needle sharing

Hello!  I just need some clarification with this:  It is always mentioned in this forum that once HIV+ virus is taken out of its natural environment (inside the human body), it will quickly die and not be able to infect.  In that case, why is needle sharing a way of transmission, when the HIV+ blood inside the syringe (or on the needle) is already outside the human body?

The sharing of intravenous needles is one of the highest risks for HIV transmission. The blood is protected within the needle and is injected directly into the vein of the user. That makes it a perfect venue for transmission.

By contrast someone bleeding on an environmental surface or even on another person is quite different and does not offer HIV that kind of accessible circumstance in which to survive viably and be transmitted.
