Unprotected sex and oral

Hi,  I am male, and the weekend of August 13, 2011 I had unprotected anal sex, I was the receptive partner, and there was some ejaculation.  I also had an encounter the same weekend with a male who I gave oral too, with ejaculation into my mouth.  I quickly spit it out.  The one I gave oral sex to took an Oraquick HiV test a couple of weeks later, and it was negative at 20 minutes, (I was able to confirm the result)  but he has been in jail before and has used IV drugs in the past, but not recently.  Also has some jailhouse tatoos if that matters.  The other guy is married, and said he had not been with anyone else besides his wife.  I want to believe him as I have known him for a while, but this was our first sexual encounter.  He was the insertive partner to the sex.

Exactly 13 days after the encounters, I had the worst sore throat that made me lose my voice.  Over the next few days I also experienced some fever, and very painful muscle aches/burning.  I did have some diarrhea, but no nausea/vomiting or rash that I was aware of.  Lymph nodes did not enlarge at that time either.   These symptoms lasted about a week and a half, but the voice took a good 3 to 4 weeks to fully return. 

The day before my sore throat occurred, I started a new job in a children's clinic (I am in healthcare and know how to assess, but that doesn't make me any smarter about sex, apparently)  and many of the kids had sore throat, fever, and all sorts of other illness.  Even the staff attributed my illness to my new exposure to the clinic environment.  But they of course did not know about my recent sexual activity. 

A couple of weeks after the illness I contacted a friend at the health unit and was tested for HIV, which was negative.  Of course I was worried, and noticed I dropped about 7 pounds in a week, and making my muscles smaller.  I also tested negative at 6 weeks and at 10 weeks ( 70 days), and had other STD test, which were negative.  The test is the Clearview Complete HiV 1/2.  I didn't have Hepatitis screenings though.


About 3 to 4 weeks after my symptoms went away, I noticed enlarged groin and abdominal lymph nodes which makes me nervous, because they have essentially remained enlarged, although they fluctuate in size lately, and are still there. 

Of course, I still plan on getting tested in the future, but for my own peace of mind, is 10 weeks a good indication?

Although you definitely had a high level risk for HIV by having receptive, unprotected anal intercourse, with a negative result at 10 weeks it is very likely that you will continue to test negative at 3 months. And you should re-test at 3 months just to be sure.

Your swollen lymph nodes are something you should discuss with your doctor. Keep your hands off of them as they are very sensitive.  Squeezing them can create a real problem.

Hopefully you're going to scoot by safely this time regarding HIV. But you need to stop having unsafe sex. You can be with as many partners as you want to but you need to do it the safer way. That means always and without exceptions having the insertive partner wear a condom for anal (and vaginal) intercourse. Otherwise you will be putting your life at high risk.

Also, we advise anyone who is sexually active to at least once a year have a full STD panel done. Other STDs arte much easier to acquire than HIV.

Ok, I am back with an update.  First, thank you for lending an "ear" to my situation that had me really concerned.  I called my doctor's office last week, and asked for several blood tests to be done, specifically HIV, Hepatitis panels, and the usual CBC, etc.  I had it drawn on day 91 after my stupid encounters.  So this week I saw the nurse practitioner and all tests were negative and did not show anything unusual in my other blood work either  (except that I am now becoming hypothyroid, but that's pretty common).   

So after all of my worrying, which was due to my own reckless sexual behavior, I can finally be at ease about those encounters 3 months ago.  It was the longest 3 months of my life!  I hope I have learned my lesson too, I really do. 

Just wanted to say thank you for your listening to people like me who are/were freaking out about symptoms and such. 

For the benefit of other readers, I tested with an HIV antibody test a few times, around maybe 4, 6, and 10 weeks, which were negative.  The one guy I gave oral to also tested negative again, around 10 weeks afer the encounter.

OK. That's happy news. And very importantly remember to always use condoms for vaginal and anal intercourse, because those are the real sexual risks for HIV.
