If you're white and were born in Philly you're either Italian or Irish.

probably a bunch of Italians

Coming from an Italian family myself (New Jersey, no less) I'd bet money on that.

Wumpy, are there any communities in Texas with people of Italian heritage?  Or have they all been imported, like me?

Barbara please. The only "Little Italy" you're going to find in San Antonio is at Maggiano's on Afterglow Street. ::)

I bet I've lived in more Italian communities than Henry has, and I'm not even Italian. And shouldn't your name really be Enrico?

My first apartment in NYC was in Little Italy across from the first pizzeria in America. And, of course, I currently live in an Italian neighborhood.

It's a little known fact that our Society Hill neighborhood contains the largest concentration of 18th & 19th century architecture in the US.

thankyouverymuch

ps: Enrico, were you South Jersey or North?

North Jersey.  Morris County.  Although I did have one Aunt who lived in Camden *shudder* -- not the 'burbs like Cherry Hill, but Camden.  She was on Mom's side of the family, the Polish side  ;D , who I didn't have much contact with.  But that's another story.  I guess you could also call me Heniek as well as Enrico.   ::)

Well, early 19th century, perhaps.  Louisville takes over for late 1800's.  We claim the largest number of preserved Victorian homes.

Honey, if you can read that it's being specific about one type of architecture -- only Victorian.

Society Hill is 18th century to early 19th. In other words all pre-Civil War (Federal and Georgian architecture). Victorian architecture doesn't begin until after that. We have a lot of Victorian in West Philadelphia but much of it was torn down to expand the Univ. of PA and Drexel. Plus at the time this area was considered a "streetcar suburb" and not the city proper.

It's very apples to oranges since Philadelphia had ten time the population when the war began. There weren't many people living in Louisville. And by the way, consider yourself lucky that Yankees occupied the city and thus didn't torch it. ;)

Think of it this way. I live in a building older than most of what is in your historic district, and my building isn't even landmarked or in an historic district.

San Antonio only had 8,000 people living there at that time so it wasn't even worth torching. And before you come back with how you're growing so quickly you're almost as large as up here, please realize we're confined to 140 sq. miles whereas you have 400, and will probably just annex the rest off Bexar County.

Oh, let's not go there -- I was born and raised 35 miles from General Lee's mansion, and 30 from the Battle of Bull Run. Neither of you tards can make that claim.

... not to mention during college I lived around the corner from Tredegar Iron Works where that cannon was probably manufactured. So full of fail, Guilhermina.

Oh please. The oldest part of the town I live in has buildings from the late 1300s right through to modern-day - including a castle (Peel Castle). In fact, the oldest part of the castle (Monk's tower) dates from the fifth century, and it's still standing. It was built by monks as a defense against Vikings. So there.

Monk's tower, the oldest bit...

Um, yeah, sure, that's why people still (21 years later) still tell me how strong my American accent is - and my nickname is still The Yank because of it.

Anyway, you're not originally from the place you're always bragging about either, so put a sock in it put mittens on.

It is commonly known that we real Indians are the most ancient of the lot, in fact so much so that many of us continue to live like we did 5000 years ago. LOL

Interesting how you only hold up VA as a supreme thing when it might help you win an "contest".  I've lived here for over 12 years now -- VA is not really "all that".  It's a pretty state, but man they have some weird ways of thinking here.  I mean they keep re-electing folks fools like Eric Cantor and Ken Cuccinelli into office over and over.  They may be an "old" state, but they don't seem able to actually live in the current, modern, real world.

Thanks for the personal attack darling!

Aside from that, let us all acknowledge for the record, that Virginia was also progressive enough to elect the first African American governor of any US state since Reconstruction, and they did it 22 years ago. This was no small thing.

And that election happened 3 weeks before I moved to NYC so I can claim to have voted for him.

BTW -- your alma mater is having it's annual rash of robberies.  All these new students who don't know how to conduct themselves as the walk around the city, drunk, at night.

M

Failure to dodge bullets while doing ecstasy? Fortunately the homicide rate didn't skyrocket until the year after I left.

ps: have you eaten here? It did well on Travel Channel's "Best Sandwich in America" contest several months ago? I think it was a fried oyster sandwich that they had entered. Unfortunately it lost to Philadelphia ;) But seriously, if I'm driving up I-95 when driving to my brother's it's an easy stop-off alternative to Bill's BBQ on Boulevard.

Who da thunk it, college freshmen getting drunk and disorderly. Seems some around here have forgotten their own misspent youth, now that they have let go and let God.

My landlord leased the first floor to college students last month, and they managed complaints their first weekend here from having a party until 2 AM. I didn't hear anything. But I'm over them for turning the front stoop into a huge ashtray. Seriously, how hard is it to put the butts in a PBR can?

Naturally they're all slacker hipsters attending U-Arts.

I hope they don't develop the unseemly habit of coming up the rear fire escape and smoking GANJA on the rear roof because it comes right in my kitchen window and is annoying.

Just hang out the window and wave your cane while you stick out your dentures out at them and they will scatter .

I'm not that decrepit yet. For the record, I didn't even break a sweat yesterday during my stress test on that treadmill (unlike Guilhermina or Theodora).

Wow, you're in good shape.  That better diet works.  And, the marathon sex.  You sure they didn't give you the granny version, where you just do a brisk walk?  I was running top speed as the incline kept increasing.  Then, they tell you to jump off and run to the bed, so they check your heart.  I feel worse now, if you could do it with no problem and I thought I was going to pass out.  ;)

LOL, I reiterated with the staff that I was coming off foot surgery 4 months ago (in fact my physical therapy only ended 2 weeks ago) so instead of working me to exhaustion they got me up to the minimum reading (139) where they can take an acceptable test. I actually went to 141. If they'd had me go to the next elevation level on the treadmill I would have been running, and obviously that wouldn't probably be a good idea for my feet now (if ever actually).

As it was this morning when I woke up there was a light bruised color where all of my tendons had been lengthened, and my feet are sore. Well, more sore than usual, they basically always hurt sadly.

Also, my target number may have been different than yours because you're younger than I am. Still, if I hadn't had surgery twice on my feet I would have had absolutely no problem even at my age going up to the next level and running. It's not just that I am no overweight, nor have I ever been, it's also that since I haven't owned a car in 23 years I walk everywhere and go up/down lots of staircases. You folks that drive are too sedentary. And really Theo, at the age of 36 you shouldn't be out of breath with that test. Join a fucking gym.

Do you not smoke joints? I would try to get a toll for fire escape smoking, if I could do it without being "the troll who demands a toll"...

Yes, I felt so pathetic that I've dusted off my elliptical and have been using it, instead of using it as a clothes hanger.  In my defense, they said the beta-blocker can cause issues.  Ok, I am just out of shape.  I can't blame the BB for all my difficulty.  It was a wake-up call.  At my age, I would think it should have been a breeze.   I think my heart rate got to 188, when they said to jump off.

Drug use is illegal. Of course I don't smoke pot.

Clearly you missed my point --- perhaps because the message wasn't directed at you.
This had nothing to do with being disorderly, it had to do with being new in a city and getting mugged and/or assaulted because you don't know your surroundings.   ::)

Yeah -- Richmond is having a banner year for murders and shootings.  I'm happy to be situated in the suburbs, with my yard, driveway and pool!

I've not eaten at Black Sheep -- in fact, hadn't heard of it.  There are a plethora of little eateries around the city -- always able to find something new and interesting.  Although, there isn't any good Thai food to be found anywhere!!
