Title: HIV Transmission Questions :(
Post by: NervousBoy78 on September 23, 2013, 08:22:26 pm
Hello,

This past weekend I got into a physical altercation at a night club (not my fault). Long story short, I ended up with a cut on my pinky and middle knuckle, a scrape on my forearm and several scratch marks that were obviously bleeding as much as the normal scrape/scratch would. The guy I was fighting had a few wounds as well and I ended up getting some of his blood on me. Not a lot, just some spots of blood. I did not think anything of this until my mother advised that I should get an HIV test because blood was involved.

Now I know the skin provides a barrier against HIV, but I don't know about broken, bleeding skin. What I am losing sleep over is since his blood was on me, I am worried that it might have entered MY blood stream via my cuts, scratches... etc. I am kind of freaking out. I mean, blood to blood contact does not sound good. Please lead me in some kind of direction. Thank you!

The risk factors for HIV are ...

Sharing IV drug needles immediately after use.
Unprotected anal and vaginal sex.
Mother to child during or shortly after birth
Very specific healthcare situations.

No one has ever been infected with HIV in the manner you are concerned with so rest assured you were not at risk for HIV .

Hello Jeff and thank you... even if his blood came in contact with broken skin? I'm sorry, I'm having a hard time understanding.  :(

You didn't have a risk ... I read your concern carefully .

HIV isn't transmitted in that manner . Use condoms for vaginal and anal sex , don't share IV drug rigs and you will avoid HIV , it really is that simple .

Thank you Jeff.... I appreciate your response and will rest easier tonight. Sorry if my question seemed a little stupid. I see someone else's blood on me and I get a little unsettled.

Thank you again!

You are not alone , we get these questions all the time and not one infection has resulted from these incidents  . If you had a risk we would be begging you to seek testing and treatment if needed ... but fortunately for you there was no risk .
