I'm a Margarita/AIDs man myself.

Look, I drink too and hate to be preachy but 4-6 beers daily seems a bit much. I know that alcohol in moderation is not a problem and the problems arise when you start drinking in excess and forget to take your meds each day on time.

Especially if you have very low CD4's, I would be very careful that you do not miss ANY doses.

I don't know if physiologically 6 beers a day will hurt you regarding HIV, I will have to defer to someone else on that specific question.

I think Will hit the nail square on the head on this one.  I am a one - two beer, four or five times a week guy.  My city is known for the craft beers, and rain.  If I lived in the fine metropolis of San Antonio, I would be drinking Margaritas too!

Back on topic: I have some purely unscientific, anecdotal, observations about alcohol and HIV for me.

It seems like alcohol affects me more post HIV than it did pre HIV - and the primary logical reason that I can think of is that my liver is processing the meds and the alcohol at the same time, and is therefore taking longer to process both.  The advice I have been given is to drink lots of water -- and I try to drink a glass of water or two between each beer.

Best, JM

If you live in the States you are a functional alcoholic. If you are European you are a light drinker

A six pack of beer each day sounds excessive (but I'm American).

My concern is liver damage.  Liver disease is the number one comorbidity in people with HIV.  In addition, as mentioned previously getting drunk is a big barrier to taking meds consistently.

Tylenol is especially bad for your liver and beer makes for lot's of burping.

It's a good idea to take your meds in the morning when you are not drunk. Much easier to be responsible that way.

Don't mix Percocet with alcohol because of the acetaminophen (Tylenol).

If you drink Mount Gay with tonic and take straight Oxycontin with it you won't have liver damage for years.

I drink no beers containing AIDS. Hops, malt, barley, foreign, domestic, craft, and home brewed beers. None with AIDS....

Sixer a night? I'm a cheap date, two beers and out like a light.

Like Jmarksto I am also a craft beer guy. Although Belgian beers are my favorite. I usually have at least one beer a day. Most times it is between 2 and 4 beers a day. Some days more than others. I have an alarm set on my phone to remind me to take my meds. Most of the time I have taken them before it goes off.

I have no peer reviewed evidence, but am convinced white zin increases CD4's and lowers VL.
