Where else can you find an iPad 4 with bluetooth keyboard in a case sitting above the sink in the men's room in Concourse Z next to Gate 19, and since my flight was already boarding I couldn't go looking for Lost & Found to turn it in.

I feel kind of bad about it, but oh well. :P

ps: o hai guyz! I've now been awake for 21 hours so it's klonnie time.

Can't the Kraut just go online and wipe the iPad making it useless?

Honestly you couldn't give it to the boarding attendant, or flight attendant. I know it sounds lame, with probably the most popular excuse being that they would keep it themselves, but still better their conscience and not yours.

They can wipe the information via iCloud I think, and if they have the locator app they can tell where the iPad is via GPS. But they can't force you to return it, it will only show a message with a phone number asking you to call them to return it. And of course this is only if the owner knows how to do all of that.

So if the info is wiped (and I have no intention of engaging in identity theft anyway) I guess I'd just have an operable iPad with a clean drive.

That's a lovely suggestion but it's a bit late to consider doing so right now. As it is, it won't power up because the battery must be drained so I have to buy an Apple cord for $20 to charge it. If the owner has the locator app activated and it gives me his/her phone number and if (and that's a large if since this was in Germany) it's a US phone number I will return it, though he/she will need to reimburse me for the power cord and shipping expenses.

As I said, my flight was boarding when I went into the bathroom so I was rushing to get in line when I came out, and I was already over Lufthansa because my first flight had been delayed causing me to be re-routed from Munich to Frankfurt with not much time to navigate from one terminal to the other and also go through passport control.

Or keys in a door of a Jaguar?

I'd conclude it was local law enforcement attempting to set someone up (for auto theft).

So if someone "finds" your iPhone you're cool with them keeping it? Sorry Mary but you basically stole that iPad. May God have mercy on your soul.

That really takes the proverbial cake. You steal someone's iPad and you expect to be reimbursed for a power cord and shipping expenses?

Glad it's your karma and not mine. Jeeze. You should be ashamed of yourself - hell, I'm ashamed for you. It's bad enough that you stole someone else's property, but then you come online and brag about it? You're too much - and very much full of fail.

1) You can turn it on, but don't you need a password to get into it?

2) Any Kraut worth his krautiness will have Find my iPad and will contact you.

3) Surely there are tips online, how to "make us of" a "found" iPad. But I'm with Ann, go with number 2.

Losing a machine really sucks. Even though any Kraut will have his iPad fully backed up and also with have theft insurance.

I think there is a cultural difference operating here.  In some countries, people will leave lost property thinking either cleaners or the owner will recover it.  OR, people, take lost property to the municipal lost and found.

This went against my American instincts when I first came here - the idea of just leaving an object where it is sitting...

I found a fully loaded briefcase containing a laptop this spring, on the steps at the train-station.  I did NOT leave it there because things ARE unfortunately changing...  So just dropped it at the ticket window, it took me 30 secs. But it was when I was getting off the train so I knew I had a few minutes to spare.

But, back in USA, even in a big city like NYC, people DO hand in found objects.  Metro North and Grand Central has a good service, at least it used to....

Im sure I know what is right to do about objects....  Because objects are so personal and meaningful.

I know what is right to do about a bag of cash, too. However in that case I might not do what is right...  But, I might..  You still read about people returning bags of cash and yep the person who lost it is happy.  But I guess you don't read about the bags of cash that just get cycled into the system, never reclaimed.

Well yes, of course -- it's the only way to turn on the iPad because the power is drained, and you need to do that to receive the locator message that if the owner has activated it will show his phone number to return the device. Some people put a passcode on it and others do not. I researched last night and if I walked into the local Apple store and presented it as lost evidently they would do nothing about it. It's not their responsibility to operate a global lost and found operation -- who knows what country this person lives in. It was Frankfurt Aiport not Purt Aer Vannin in Douglas, for all I know they could be in Bhutan by now.

Obviously you don't know shit about how these machines work, so you can take your proverbial cake and use it as a suppository.

And why should I pay for shipping to return someone's lost iPad -- they're lucky I'm returning it. If I'd left it on the sink some other person without lofty scruples such as I (may choose to) possess would have walked off with it.

ps: and to the rest of you Holy Saints as I explained I had NO TIME TO LOCATE LOST & FOUND because my flight was boarding. Yooz some very judgmental Marys.

AND MAY I REMIND YOU THAT NOBODY RETURNED MY BORIS BIDJAN SABEIRI SCARF WHEN I LOST IT AT THE PHL AIRPORT SIX MONTHS AGO!

Q: when you find $100 on a sidewalk what do you do -- now answer honestly folks. I bet Ann takes it to her local church and offers it to a priest. Doxie just spends it on blow. And, well... I won't say what meech does.

You do realize that there's probably only a 30% chance that a Kraut was involved, seeing as how FRA is the 3rd busiest airport in Europe and I was in the international departures past passport control.

Hey I'm not being the school marm here. I think you had a pretty common reflex.  And I think you should get reimbursed for sending it back if the owner presents.

You did say that you'd only call if it was a US number, however, that was sorta iffy...

I only explained that in some places, the thing to do it just leave the object.  Which goes against my instinct, at least.

100 bucks I would most likely pocket it, as said above.  100 bucks is not a "bag of cash".  8)

About leaving things, however.

One time coming home late from work, bushed, I left my laptop in my sack on the train.  Waiting for the bus, I realised my mistake, ran back to the train, which was still there, trash being emptied.  My sack was in a huge trash bag.  I asked the cleaners - why would you throw away an entire full heavy knapsack....  He sorta made an attempt to say it would have been recuperated later on, the sac just gets filled with everything....  But i doubted this....

Who knows.....

I just know losing a valued object sucks big time.  Its worse then losing money, usually.

Jet setting international business travelers should have riders on their insurance to cover such losses -- how exactly a laptop or iPad is a "treasured possession" is beyond me. They're entirely replaceable. It's not like losing Grandpa's 18k hand engraved white gold ruby ring.

As far as the information stored on the unit Apple fully provides for remote "full wipe" of the data, which has been double encrypted anyway. And if you don't place a password on the homescreen then you are a moron.

Furthermore, Apple LOVES people losing these items, because people go back and buy another one right away because they're all crack addicts. If you can't afford to lose such items then you should fucking be using a pen and spiral notebook to record your very.important.life.

ps: Thanks to everyone for asking if I enjoyed my trip. It's really nice to have a such a close group of friends here.

/irony

Oh, and another thing -- I stole an unused Lufthansa travel blanket too! Should I return this? O hai -- and I you folks steal sealed soap from hotel room bathrooms. I don't even ever do that. So low class.

And by the way, as a person of distant Bavarian extraction I find the repeated use of the word "Kraut" in this thread offensive and disturbing and kindly request that the concerned parties halt such derogatory language.

Cherie, I asked in the other thread.  ::)

Don't be so defensive about the pushback on the iPad.  I would say you're ambivalent (seeing as you started a special thread, which could only invite such pushback...) and you'll do what seems right to you.

If I found a hundred quid in the road I'd turn it in to the local cop shop. If no one claims any turned in lost property within 30 days, the person who turned it in is contacted and offered the item. I got my first mobile phone that way.

If I found a fiver, I'd pocket it. Anything larger, I'd turn it in. I know what it's like to have things lost or stolen and for someone of limited income, losing even a tenner can be catastrophic.

Miss PeePee, you could have simply handed it in to the airport staff at the gate from which you were departing. Your claims of not having time to locate the lost and found department simply do not wash with me.

You drug addled queen, quit trying to rationalize the fact that you're a thief. If you had spent half the time returning it instead of making excuses we wouldn't be having this conversation. As you were handing your coach ticket to the flight attendant you could given them the iPad and flew home with a clear conscience. No one is buying your lame excuses. As for your trip, now that I know you're a common thief I hope the only souvenir you came home with is a case of the clap. You should be put on the no fly list.

When I told my 79 year old father all about this last night, and mind you he is/was a Southern Baptist deacon, he said something like "Oh, I guess it's like finding money on the road." Followed by, "Oh, your mother saw everyone using those things on our cruise last month and now she wants one -- which one should we buy?" Maybe I'll just send him this tidy piece of German "hot property" as a Father's Day gift and call it a day (and hopefully get less grief from the AIDSmess Peanut Gallery).

You drug addled queen

I was not on drugs when this happened, if you are referring to legally prescribed prescription medication for my anxiety issues, not am I at the moment (though I did take two on the flight and two last night to go to bed -- no that was four to go to bed so I guess it's still in my system, long half-life and all that).

I was definitely on something when I made my new avatar in Marseille. ::)

Nothing more telling than rationalization.  Clearly even you know this was wrong.

I'd have (slightly) more respect for you if you'd just say, "yeah, I stole it -- so what", instead of trying to justify your theft with "I didn't have time.....", "you'd all steal something too.....", etc, etc.

Girl your reasoning is beginning to border on the bizarre. You know damn well your father would have turned it over to the proper authorities. Notice he said buy and not steal when he discussed getting one for your mother. Anywho, keep it, sell it, give it away, you still stole it.

For the record, when I related this find on facebook Jan gave me the big "LIKE" thumbs up. So if you Saints are gonna be h8trz you better be hating on that old woman too, and goodness knows you all treat her like her shit is white as a field of lilies. But poor ole Miss P -- no, she's the living embodiment of Beelzebub. The living reification of Lucifer, harbinger of evil, doom and death. Beast of the sea, with seven heads and ten horns and upon these horns ten crowns, and upon my heads the name of blasphemy.

Fact is, I still haven't decided to do with it. Like I said, it will cost $20 just to power up the device and that's only because I already own a Mac and can use the USB port. If I had to plug into a wall outlet it would cost me $40 (cord plus adaptor), and then -- if and only if the locator app is on and gives out the owner's phone number, I'd have to pay the cost of a call if it's international plus the shipping. I'd not be surprised if all that came to $100.

But you're right -- I should have just left it on the shelf above the sink so that the 20 year old boy from Bangalore waiting for the toilet after me could have taken on the responsibility.

Girl there's something wrong with you and continuing to reach for a rationale is almost psychotic. Quit playing the victim because no one gives a flying fig if poor ms p has to pay forty dollars to power up her stolen 500 hundred dollar iPad. You really have become unseemly about all of this. Plus just creepy the way you bring Jan into something she had nothing to do with. That's it for me.

Oh dear!!  not going well is it Miss P.

Oh, and another thing -- I stole an unused Lufthansa travel blanket too! Should I return this?

I have two Air travel blankets, I did steal one but asked if I could have the other and they gave it to me, (two seperate flights) I use them as car blankets.

What's done is done, you know Miss P will do what he wants to do, regardless of what you all think, right or wrong it's his choice,

Oh and less of the *old women* Miss P only I get to say that.

It's not as if P picked up someone's baby and took it home.  All this moral judging over an iPad.

Oh, that is such a weak lie.

I'm going to start kidnapping kittens and puppies next week. Rest assured. I can't wait to see the reaction of all the animal lovers here. Next month I'll steal infants and use them in vivisection experiments like Mengele.

How about if I mail the iPad to you and let you shell out $100 to return the item to the owner in Jakarta. C'mon tough guy -- pony up!

ps: Goodness knows this thread is about 150 times more interesting than the drivel that passed here the last 10 days I was gone. You girls need to step it up with your Atripla side effects and paper cuts caused by HIV.

I found a bottle of Percocet someone left on the table at a restaurant.  I gave it to the server.

Later, I thought that server probably had a good night.  I should have called the pharmacy.  It was some mom and pop pharmacy way off from me, so it would have been hard for me to return it to the pharmacy.  But, it would have helped the person in pain, when they called the doc/pharmacy and said they lost it, and were probably told too bad, thinking the person was lying to get more pills.  But, I thought if they reported it as stolen, I could get messed up in them thinking I stole the pills.

I did find about $500 dollars once.  It was in a woman's bag, that was left on a bench.  There was no identification in the bag.  This was way back when I was 17.  I was in need of cash.  I kept it.  Today, I would take it to police.  One of the first times I went to an adult bookstore, I found $200 on the floor in a peep booth.  I did watch for an hour, to see if anyone returned for the money.  I kept it.  Again, I was about 18.  I think my morals have grown about things like this.  I think I would give it to a clerk, even though they would probably just pocket the money.  But, it would be off my conscious.

I would have turned in the iPad, just like I have chased down drunks who left cash in the ATM in front of me, but this:
I found a bottle of Percocet someone left on the table at a restaurant.  I gave it to the server.

This I would have  kept.

Sounds like moral relativism of a sort, n'est-ce pas?

So, I'm off to the Sunday farmer's market -- hopefully I will find some things to steal when nobody is looking. If I'm really lucky I will grab someone's cute little puppy and abscond quickly with it. This will be my new hobby -- crushing the affections of the bourgeoisie by pilfering their little loved furry creatures.

Yup, very first page of a Google search.  And Philicia provided all the details as to where this gadget was found (gate, bathroom location, etc.).   Maybe she wants to be found by the iPad's owner after all.

Hopefully the item belonged to some millionaire from Dubai who is not even missing it at the moment.

Ps./ Philicia, I hope you had a très fabuleux time in France.

Pps./ could everyone be so kind as to stop using the derogatory "krauts" while referring to people from Deutschland?  I'd truly truly appreciate it.   That is pretty much the same thing as referring to Mexicans as "beaners".  Pretty please.

Kthxbi!!1

Oh girl -- I tried that route already yesterday to absolutely no avail. I guess "Nazi" and "Jew Killer" will come up by tonight.

Also, cocks

ps: And ladies -- this is basically how Lufthansa and Frankfurt Airport operate:

On the 24th of May 2012 I landed in Frankfurt from Detroit and accidentaly I forgot my I Pad in the pocket of my business class seat 11D. I realized it after few minutes when I reached the gate. Immediately I informed the Lufthansa ground staff in order to go back and pick it up or have somebody to do it for me. The Lufthansa staff did not allow me to do it and they informed me that I had to file a claim to the Lost & Found desk to have it back. UNBELIAVABLE !! I was just few meters from my precious I Pad and I have to file a claim? Extremely frustraed I went to the Senatour Lounge close to gate B42 hoping to have a better support being a long time Lufthansa customer. To my surprise the lady at the counter gave me the same reply: "You have to file a claim" !!!

Now after 2 days I do not get any positive reply from the Lost & Found office and probably the I Pad has been stolen some where in the airport and this is only because the Lufthansa staff did not let me go back and take it or send an operator to do it immediately. On top of this I can not find anybody to talk with, I can only send e-mails. After having flew all my life with Lufthansa I believe I do not deserve this. This item for me is extremely important, not for the value but for its content, all my life is in it.

ps: Miss P has caught an upper respiratory infection as of 4 AM this morning and it's obviously due to this iPad issue and the Angel of Death.

If I'm really lucky I will grab someones cute little puppy and abscond quickly with it. This will be my new hobby -- crushing the affections of the bourgeoisie by pilfering their little loved furry creatures.

If this turns out to be a weekly/monthly thing, then please make sure you look after the little furry creatures.

Remember they will need regular injections, wormed monthly and if necessary fixed up, and please don't feed them your fancy french cheeses, or fancy hamburgers, they do a nice line in gourmet dog/cat foods.

Of course they will need a nice warm bed at night, so I suggest you move your bedding to the couch now before you start the kidnapping, I'm guessing the mood you are in at the moment there is going to be quite a few furry creatures running around your apartment, so you really do have to be prepared.

Why such a fuss about this bloody Ipad?
Just write a message  to Lost& found in Frankfurt/Main. If they dont find the owner you can keep it after 3 months legally. If they know the owner , he has to pay You 5% of the price plus shipping fee.

Anyway, Germany has bigger problems at the moment. A quarter of the country is underwater and the damages will be in the billions.
Nobody is offended here to be called as Kraut. :) We know our  evil history and can live with it, as long as the rest of the world buys our cars and machines.:)

I BLAME ANN
If you really wanted to redeem yourself you would quite blaming other people and send Dame Ann an iPad. Just a thought. You could easily afford this if you would quite those fabulously, delish, highfalutin concepts of a restaurant for a week or two and start eating cheap like Ms. Willy. His thighs are giggly and happy and this could happen to you as well.

Oh and please don't send the stolen one to Ann, that is not what I meant. Neither one of us as accomplices to your escapades, I should speak for myself, wants to end up in prison.

I just walked outside and gave the iPad to a homeless man.

I'm also extremely constipated (but finally just squeezed out one turd with Willamina's name on it) and have developed an upper respiratory infection since early this morning, most likely due to all of the Gitanes I was forced to smoke in France.

Yeah, I'm still on Euro time too. Normally I adjust to jet lag in one day, but being sick has made it impossible. I fell asleep during Keeping Up With the Kardashians on the sofa and then moved into the bedroom after a couple hours on the sofa, but then kept getting up to go to the bathroom. Finally I just couldn't get back to sleep so I got up at 3:30 AM (which is when I normally go to bed!).

Now I'm waiting for the post office to open at 9 p.m. and then CVS for some Mucinex-D extended release, plus I have to cut out ciggies until it clears up. I'm not bedridden or anything though and that Mucinex is like "lite" meth and has been making me do loads of laundry and scrub tile flooring. That has it's benefits I suppose.
