Philadelphia Gay Politics SUCK... publishes Obama hit piece
« on: April 09, 2008, 07:49:10 pm »
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/05/scathing-editorial-obama_n_95210.html

The Philadelphia Gay News sucks ass and just did a MAJOR hit piece on Barack Obama called "“Clinton Talks; Obama Balks” -- claiming that Obama refused to do an interview with them.  So, they get all queeny dramatic (the gay community is FIRMLY in Hillary's pockets in this town, just like in NYC... it's an Oedipus thing) and fun the front page (see link above) where they just leave a huge blank space where the Obama interview would have been.

OF COURSE, now it comes out that Philadelphia Gay News publisher Mark Segal’s a major Hillary contributor, and neglected to offer that as a normal disclaimer publicly in the rag.  What an ass.  Biased a bit?

I don't read that tired excuse for a newspaper as it is, and in the future I will take all copies and throw them in a trash receptacle.

Obama said he can “reasonably see” repealing “don’t ask, don’t tell” during his administration. He also said he would support legislation to ban workplace discrimination against gays. He said he’d like transgendered people to be covered by the law, but thinks it would be tough to get such legislation through Congress.

For Full disclosure I like Hillary.  I also like FULL Disclotheser :)

:)  I didn't say she was gonna win and I'm not giving money to anyone.  I will vote for ANY democrat over John McCain.  I posted a positive statement from Barack.

FYI
This is the response Philadelphia Gay News publisher Mark Segal gave to the conroversial front page article(s):

"Mark My Words / Mark Segal

Obama goes national, still no local

PGN was overwhelmed and pleased by the reaction to last week’s front page interview with Sen. Hillary Clinton and the absence of one from Sen. Barack Obama.
Our reasoning for our cover was justified by some news I’ll share in a minute.
First, thanks to all of you who wrote — regardless of your position on either of the candidates. With the exception of those who used sexism, racism or anti-Semitism to make their point, we appreciate your feedback. About two-thirds of the e-mails were positive, while about a third were negative, and many were cut-and-paste form e-mails. And in their justification, they pointed out one leering fault on our part.
Last year, I attended a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton as a favor for my governor. I paid for the ticket out of my own pocket. More than a favor to my governor, I really wanted to hear her speak and see what she was about. In the following week’s column, I wrote about going to the fundraiser, putting it on record. In more recent columns, I've stated that we're blessed to have two such highly qualified individuals running for the Democratic presidential nomination, and that we can be proud of either choice. Two weeks ago I wrote this: "Liberty City Lesbian and Gay Democratic Club, in coordination with the National Stonewall Democratic Club, held a presidential event for the GLBT community this week at Woody's. Even though they had already endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton in the Pennsylvania primary, they invited representatives from both candidates. That’s unity!
“This year we can make history. We have two incredible candidates, and if anyone thinks they can predict the nominations at this point, please have them look at the track record of political pundits thus far this year. The way for Democrats to win is to unite behind whoever the candidate may be. After all do we want President John McSame?”
After Obama’s inspirational speech on race, I found myself on the fence. For personal reasons, that speech touched me deeply. I have been public about my high regard for his grace and intelligence and ability to transcend all lines with his oratory. We also made those points to those close to Obama who were pressing for an interview on our behalf. But even those we put on pedestals sometimes fall or make mistakes. Not talking to the local LGBT press for 1,529 days is such a mistake.
Now, the news I promised. On Monday, Obama sat down for an interview with The Advocate, which has national distribution. That’s good, but I hope Sen. Obama doesn’t think it’s one and done.
Today’s cover, like last week's, once again points out that Obama has not done a full interview with the local LGBT press in 1,529 days. Prior to Monday, the last interview he gave was with Chicago's Windy City Times in 2004 while he was still a state representative. Last fall, he gave a limited interview with The Advocate following the controversy that erupted when his traveling Southern campaign had an antigay minister in tow. The magazine handled that with grace, and also tossed a few other questions in, but that was damage control. And now again, when Obama is in damage-control mode, he turns to The Advocate.
With all due respect, Senator, by going to The Advocate, you had a cheat sheet. Clinton had already answered the tough questions in PGN last week — the same questions you were going to be asked.
When PGN requested interviews with both senators, we had identical ground rules. Both candidates would be asked the same questions, no follow-up questions would be asked and both would have only 15 minutes. This formula was devised so no bias could be shown to either candidate. We even held the Clinton interview for one week to give the Obama campaign time to decide if they wanted to participate. They finally called, an hour and a half before our deadline — and tried to keep us hanging another week.
During this campaign, no other news outlet has asked the following questions directly to the candidates themselves: Would you use an executive or signing order to strike down “Don't Ask, Don't Tell?” What would you do to improve the immigration policy for gay couples? What changes would you make toward governments that execute gay people, such as Iran, Egypt and Iraq? Should the Department of Education give local school districts and teachers direction on presenting LGBT-positive lesson plans?
The point is you know Clinton’s views on those issues, but Obama's are unknown. Only the local gay press will ask detailed questions. That is also why most communities look to their community newspapers for detail, not just fundraising talk and stump speeches. Don't you want to know where Obama stands on the murders of gay men in Iran and Egypt and, more importantly, what he'll have his Department of State do about it?
We agree with political blogger and The Atlantic columnist Andrew Sullivan that this battle for the nomination will most likely go on, and that is good since it will toughen the eventual candidate for his or her battle with Sen. John McCain. We hope that by then, if the candidate is Obama, he will have spoken with the local gay press. But his history has been spotty. In each state he has traveled to, his staff has held out the possibility of an interview to local gay press simply to pull the rug after that state’s primary. That is disrespectful to the local LGBT media and, by extension, the gay community.
Local LGBT newspapers are the lifeblood of communications in our community. No other media does that.
PGN has offered to meet with Sen. Obama anywhere or by phone — his choice. We have questions that LGBT voters in Pennsylvania would like to hear the senator speak on. Senator, we are your friend, not your adversary. In the fall, we all will have to work together. The local gay press would like to be a part of that campaign.
It can’t be one and done for the gay community. He can’t take us for granted that way. We hope that is not the case. The welcome mat is still out, Senator."

Thank you for that post, bear60.
And I'm still not thinking that $1000 constitutes a major contribution in a campaign as big as Hillary Clinton's.
It's a chunk of change, alright. But not a major contributor.

I am a huge Obama supporter but let Hillary or Mccain have it (seems they are both running for the same party anyway). Who wants to be in office after Bush? Can you imagine all the blame the next President will get? He or she won't be able to clean up the HUGE mess we have now in 4 years. The next president will get blamed for everything. So let Hillary or Mccain go right ahead. Who wants the headache.

Besides there are plenty of people gay and straight that won't vote for Obama simply because of his race. VERY sad but true. Many of us in the gay community haven't even dealt with our own race issues.

The country voted for Bush for 8 years. That should tell us something. Hell I even knew the war in Iraq was very bad news and I am not even an elected official. But many people went for it including Hillary.  Now we have 4000 soldiers killed. Over 15,000 soldiers injured. Many with very serious injuries. I see them often in the DC area. Young attractive men with one leg, no legs, missing arms etc. For what? Not to mention the thousand and thousand of Iraqi lives lost. For what?  Some Americans are running around making fun of Obamas name saying he is Muslim etc and meanwhile our solidiers and innocent civilians are over there being shot at right now. Go figure. Bush has an American name, seemly picture perfect family, religious and what have we gotten?

I prefer Obama but could  easily vote for Kerry, Gore, or Kathleen Sebelius if they were running for election. I even liked Ann Richards.  I used to like Hillary too until I saw all of the things she is willing to do and say just to get elected. It's sad.

I also don't support Obama just because he is black (bi-racial). I didn't support Jesse Jackson when he ran. I wouldn't support Al Sharpton. I don't care for the Roland guy on CNN or the other African American professor from Georgetown on the talk shows. Someone needs to give  both of them a valium. They are too excitable. They scare me and I'm black :-). I do really  like Professor Cornell West though.

Most likely a democratic win for the White House will not be able to achieve a number of those promises being hurled at the American voters today. It will be a daunting task to address the mess and turn the tide. I don't see much changing in the first couple of years. Bring troops home, most definitely.

Good news is Democrats are registering to vote like hasn't been seen in years. Good sign, indeed.

Many who voted for this war and lengthy involvement have since realized it was a big mistake. All were influenced by the false claims of President Bush and his advisers at the time. Recall, we were attacked on US mainland and the shock, hurt and anger was affecting many in Congress.

Hillary's recent tactics are pathetic, I agree. I don't know why in the hell she had to resort to feeble campaigning tactics.
Sniper fire, indeed. Disappoints me. Much.

I find the whole charge of "elitism" by Hillary to be hilarious.  What drugs is she on?  For one thing, this bogus "elitism" charge is a total Republican campaign repeated charge.  Just like they turned "liberal" into a dirty word and now people are forced to say "progressive".  To see Hillary turning repeatedly to such typical tricks more worthy of Karl Rove beyond disappointing.

Can someone tell me how Obama, raised by a single mother on food stamps, is an "elitist"?  And hello, it's even funnier coming from John McCain, a man who owns 10 homes and married a painkiller addicted heiress many years his junior, so that her fortune could pay for his Senate campaigns.

And of course, the cable channels just lap it all up and don't provide any proper context.  But hey, the media is supposedly "liberal"

Hillary will do and SAY anything to win in my opinion . She even has her daughter and Bill out campaigning despite all the embarrasing mess that happen when Bill was in office. Although daughter won't do interviews with journalist. Clintons are worth more than $109 million and that is what we know. Not mentioning what money may be hidden. Oh yea the charity money. what charities were they for. And she has the nerve to talk about elitist. Let her have it. She won't stop until she drags everyone  down with her.

I thought she was a Democrat but she is doing a better job then Republicans at smearing Obama. Gore didn't win because of Bill Clinton and I'm afraid Obama won't win partly because of a huge help by Hillary in pulling him down.

Man I used to love the Clintons . It is so sad to see her act the way she is. Is there nothing she won't do to win?

Let her have it though. Hell she can drink shooters answer the telephone at 3am and show us how tough she is. It worked for Bush.

Well, being a staunch democrat and Hillary fan, I hope she does get the nomination. But, if not, then I'll vote for Obama.

In reality, I would vote for this party's candidate, but they aren't on the ballot in this state.

Gore didn't win because of Bill Clinton and I'm afraid Obama won't win partly because of a huge help by Hillary in pulling him down.

Actually, Gore DID win -- unfortunately, the Supreme Court sent Bush to the White House.

Man I used to love the Clintons . It is so sad to see her act the way she is. Is there nothing she won't do to win?

this is true -- but, alas, it is true of everyone running for the White House.  I do mean EVERYONE -- either through what they do, or what they don't do, or what they say, or what they don't say.  Running for the White House is all about making promises that will be kept only if convenient.

Bottomline for me -- while I would prefer Hillary, I will happily vote for Obama if he gets the nomination (and I'm thinking he will).  I simply can't abide a McCain win bringing in 4 more years of Bush nonesense.

By the way -- I do not think that my being a white gay man is the reason I support Hillary.  The thing with her is that we pretty much know all about skeletons.  She may have higher negatives than Obama, but when the Republican machine really starts it's stuff, I feel far more confident that there isn't something big and scary to be found in Hillary's closet that hasn't already been dragged out.  I'm not saying that Obama does, but if one of them has a big dark secret that might help McCain win, I can't imagine it will be from Hillary -- she's been under a microscope for 15 yrs now.

"Electability" arguments are, by nature, bogus -- as they're inherently unprovable.  Also, these same arguments are what gave the Democrats the supreme douchebag candidate named John Kerry.

If Gore won he would be in the white house. He didn't win as much as he should have because he couldn't use Bill Clinton. Which is how Bush got in office.

I actually think Hillary could have easily pulled through without dragging her own party members through the mud. But like I said let her have it. If I were Obama I would pull out. He can easily live a very very good life without this.

Americans voted Bush in twice. So that is what we are up against.  Fear Fear Fear sales.

At this point I think Hillary has done enough damage to make sure no Democrat will win this time. Her kitchen sink strategy is working.

We still have primaries to fulfill. It's not over till the fat ladys sings.

If Hillary loses it will be because of her campaigning and what comes out of her mouth. If Obama loses it will be because of his campaigning and what comes out of his mouth. What is going on here is nothing new under the sun; mudslinging at the final bend and towards the finish line.

Are some democrats so venomously against Hillary Clinton that they will not bother to cast a vote should she win the nomination? As some one wisely stated, Obama and Hillary are politicians. Either is poised to win the primaries and that's the process called 'politicking'.

One thing I know for sure. Neither candidate will find support by the likes of Pierce Phillips!  :D

"Electability" arguments are, by nature, bogus -- as they're inherently unprovable.  Also, these same arguments are what gave the Democrats the supreme douchebag candidate named John Kerry.

Well then, every argument as to why someone prefers one candidate to another is "by nature, bogus -- as they're inherently unprovable".  You see, people vote based on what they think, feel and/or believe about a candidate OR they vote for someone as a vote AGAINST someone else.  We never know what a candidate will do if they win.

What I am finding so interesting in this thread and anywhere that I see a Clinton vs. Obama as favorite candidate is that there is constant Hillary bashing by the Obama backers and there is the "I prefer Hillary but will support Obama if he wins the nomination" thing happening.  So, perhaps Obama can be a little less "nasty" towards Hillary because he has his supporters doing it for him.  At the end of the day, I would hope most Obama supporters would back Hillary if she wins (again, I think the nom is going to Obama anyway).  You see, there really is not much difference between the basic platforms of these 2 candidates, so they (like most close primary battles) tend to get nasty because finding fault in the other is the only way to distinguish.  I am not condoning this -- I dislike negative campaigning, but the fact is that it works, so we really only have ourselves to blame for it.

One more thing -- Philly, you ask why white gay men are supporting Hillary -- did I miss where you explain why you find Obama's position so compelling?  This is a genuine question -- I haven't heard too many people be able to give anything but "feelings" or "voting against the other candidate" reasons for supporting one over the other.  Yes, I include myself in that too.

Because I'm a cheap whore, I'm just going to cut & past something I sent a few days to another board member who asked me a similar question.

>>>
Yes.  And this is coming from someone who supported Hillary when she first ran for the Senate, and voted for her, etc. as I was living in NYC at the time.

I can't get around her dodging on her Iraq vote.  It was political opportunism and cowardice of the worst sort, and she still won't own up to it.

Plus after the primary in South Carolina I was completely disgusted with the race baiting of Bill Clinton, which is what also started the move for the Kennedys to endorse Obama.  Previous to all that I was a bit on the fence, as Hillary had performed so well in the first half of the debates, though I was still uncomfy with her extremely disingenuous explanations of her Iraq vote.

Furthermore, I simply have no desire for Clintonian drama continuing in the White House, and that would surely happen with Bill sitting around without a real job.  What will this man potentially be doing for 8 years?  This situation would be unique, but Hillary has not addressed the issue adequately.

Most importantly for me though, is that I also think Obama will attract more independents, which would  then provide a coattail effect in terms of local and congressional elections providing for greater margins in Congress, and thus more ability to implement a progressive agenda legislatively.  Obama, as a far more charismatic politician (indeed I would say a once-in-a-generation type), would give Democrats the first opportunity in my lifetime to convince average Americans about the worthiness of not just policy changes, but entire attitudes towards progressive ideology -- in the same manner as Ronald Reagan was so formative for Republicans and had such a lasting impact on conservatism.

Anyway, at this point there's simply no way for Hillary to win mathematically.  He can lose PA and then still only need 33% of the superdelegate votes to win the nomination.  I think it's obvious he'll get more than 33% of their votes because he already leads in both pledged delegates and the popular vote.  At this point Hillary is just trying to suck up more campaign donations to pay off debts and not be in the hole.  Of course, by delaying her exit she's just handing Obama and the entire Dem party into Republican hands.  Sad, actually.

(So Mike, feel free to do a similar write up on Hillary.  I don't think that the two candidates are a similar as you think).

My support of Hillary is really about one thing -- as stated earlier -- I want a democrat to win the White House.  What Obama has faced from Hillary is nothing to what the nominee is likely to face from the Republican smear machine.  My fear about an Obama nominee is that there is something lying in wait that could hand the election to McCain.  Hillary's "baggage" (to use her word from last night's debate) is out there and it is very difficult to believe that anyone is going to find anything new.  Bottomline for me is that Hillary is more of a known quantity.  I've not agreed with everything she has said or done.  Obama is indeed a very charismatic speaker, but I simply don't have enough substance to look at from his past.  He may well be a man of principle and intelligence who could breathe new life into Washington, but that hasn't shown yet.  What I am seeing is a man who seems to be very ambitious (as are all the candidates) who is using his great oratory skills to leapfrog along the ladder of power without leaving much of an imprint of accomplishments as he does.  I also agree that Bill hasn't been helping Hillary all that much, but Bill isn't running.  While having a former president as a candidate's spouse is a new thing, I am personally not spending any time worrying about his potential return to the White House, albeit in the East Wing this time.  I am far more concerned about having another Bush-like inhabitant sitting in the West Wing.
The fact of the matter is that I have seen very little difference between what the 2 of them say about the major issues, so I would be fine with either in the White House.  My comments above merely explain why I prefer one over the other -- I am NOT declaring that I think Obama is unelectable.  I actually think that it will take an implosion by the Democratic nominee to cause a Republican victory.  My hope is that neither of them would offer this scenario to the them.  They have both made some interesting gaffs of late, but none that would seem to be fatal for the fall.

Two other points that I want to comment on from previous posters:
Hillary's Iraq vote:  She didn't vote for war -- she only voted for giving the President authority to use force (something that other President's never went for, but used force anyway).  This was done by her AND the MAJORITY of Congress based on info provided that appears to be false, but also because the Administration said it would be used to have more bargaining power.  This blame lies with the Administration far more than with Congress, because even if Congress had said NO, does anyone believe that Bush wouldn't have moved forward anyway??  Plus, it is easy for Obama to say that he WOULD HAVE voted NO -- it is pretty much Monday morning quarterbacking -- he DID NOT HAVE to cast a vote back in 2003.

People harping about all the money that the Clinton's have made -- Hogwash!  First, you can't really run for President if you aren't rich (Obama is a millionaire too).  I'm not saying this is a good thing, but it is the truth.  Everyone who had the ability to make money, would do so.  I do not think for one minute that if we have a President Obama, that an ex-President Obama would hit the speaking circuit too and pull in more money than Bill ever has because of his speaking ability.

So there you have it -- no matter who wins the nomination -- I will be supporting them with my vote and with a campaign donation.

The biggest rally of the entire campaign was last night here in Philadelphia for Obama, attracting 35,000 people.  I would have gone but I'm sick with bronchitis.

Obama may have given a speech at Independence Mall near the old Independence Hall but it was Hillaries  team of dykes and fags that was out in force at the bars with Hillary stickers.  We heard that Chelsea was bar hopping in center city so we parked ourselves ( a group of 6 of us) at one bar where they kept saying Chelsea will be here soon.....but after 11 oclock and one too many Sky and tonics....I said to Kurt...."Take me home."

Modified to add:  Curiously enough there was not one Obama campaign worker handing out stickers at the gay  bars.  At least not the bars where we were.

Actually its an old tradition. Its called "pressing the flesh".  Chelsea wasnt alone, she was with Mark Segal the PGN publisher (see above in this thread) and the governor of Pennsylvania: Ed Rendell. Ed and Mark are good buddies.
Getting the gay vote here in Philadelphia has become a very big deal. Mark Segal is largely to thank for making that an important campaign "must do". When former mayor John Sttreet ran for Mayor he had to get with the program  and come out to gay establishments to meet the constituents or risk not being endorsed by Mark Segal.
There is a big democratic LGBT political  group The Liberty City Democratic Club:
Dear Liberty City member,

Last Thursday, Liberty City members came together for a fundraiser at Woody's to support our plan to help elect LGBT-friendly candidates in April 22nd's primary election. We raised over $5,000 to help pay for the printing, mailing, and advertising associated with our get-out-the-vote effort.

Thank you to all of the sponsors, hosts and members who supported the event, especially the folks at Woody's and Michael Weiss who donated the space, food, and drinks.

Tonight, Liberty City members will gather together, and listen to the recommendations of our Endorsement Committee to form our endorsed slate of candidates in key races.  Eligible members will have a chance to debate the candidates' qualifications, and vote on the committee's recommendations. It's a fun and spirited meeting, and truly a chance to see real democracy at work.

Before tonight's meeting, read the candidates' answers to our LGBT issue questionnaire for yourself, click here:

http://www.libertycity.org

Liberty City Endorsement Meeting
William Way Center, 1315 Spruce Street
6:00 PM, social time; 6:30 PM, meeting begins
Fresh hot pizza and cold local beer will be served.

Remember, only members in good-standing can participate in the debate and vote. All others are welcome, but won't be able to participate in the discussion. In order to be a member in good standing you must have attended two Liberty City events in the past 12 months and have paid your dues by the deadline. If you were a member in 2007, you can pay your dues at the meeting tonight. Otherwise, your dues must have been received or postmarked by February 14, 2008.

We hope everyone can come and participate in some way. If you are unsure about your eligibility to vote, please email us, If come tonight and speak to our Rules Committee.

See you tonight,

It's politics as usual... no one wants to speak about and or state What they will do to help LEAD this country out of this recession, real healthcare for ALL Americans, solving PUBLIC Educations problem, taxes... any real issues other than throwing stones or bringing up trash on one another...

So What? is the problem about McCain? is everyone jealous he married into WEALTH? look at the records of how much money he has freely given away... I've read where people were complaining about him drawing his retirement from the military? complaining about him drawing his social security? What in the bull crap is this about... the man worked for it... he paid into it... also he has given all his senatorial raises away to charity... his book earnings away etc... I have not seen a DAMN thing the Clintons have done but, engorge every effort and morsal into their own nest and when Bill Clinton was in office he used the gay voters for support and Hillary will do the same...

Now Obama lets see what he promises?

I see no problem in giving Obama and or McCain a chance in the office... but, I will definately NOT Vote for Clinton...

plus the president only has influence... put the blame of the mess were in where it is... our reps, senators etc... for being the BIG do nothings in DC...McCain has stated many times way many years ago about healthcare reform for the United States... and Congress has thrown every bill away and increase their own pockets...

So then we really shouldn't vote for anyone -- as all 3 of them are current US Senators -- therefore all the problems of the day are, in part, their fault.

The argument that the President is powerless before Congress is untrue.  If it were true, we wouldn't be in our current war, nor would any have happened since the end of WWII, because since Dec 8, 1941 Congress has NEVER declared war on anyone.

I absolutely agree that they should have disclosed the Clinton contribution, but if Obama refused to speak with them, what was untrue in the story?  Why does he avoid the gay press?  I don't think Clinton has all gay people in her pocket -- from what I read on here and from people I know -- there are a large number of gay Obama supporters.  Not to mention, that the number will go up even more once he gets the nomination.

Good point!
I had forgotten about that one.
However, why wouldn't he want to continue putting himself out there connecting with the GLBT community?  Seems to me that in a tight race both sides should be reaching out to as many groups, on a consistent basis, as possible.
Of course, as I said earlier, in the end I expect him to get the nomination and then the vast majority of Hillary supporters will swing to him.

Has Clinton really been that vocal and supportive of the GLBT community?  I know we have to thank them for DODT and DOMA, and the typical Clintonesque triangulations needed to justify how the gay community has actually benefited from them.

I honestly don't see either Obama or Clinton putting gay rights at the top of their agendas.  But either would be an equal improvement over the current administration.

Should he do more local gay press interviews?  Yes!

BTW- Declerations of war are so early 1900's!  Why declare war when you can authorize the use of force?  Why have a war when you can have a conflict instead?

All I can wonder is, is it "she's a woman" thing? Or jealousy thing? Or what?

That's not really practical.

But I think hate is too strong of a word.  I don't think most people hate her (some do).  I think a lot of people just don't trust her or find her genuine, some of which probably comes from the baggage she carries from Bill's administration.

When I heard about Hillary being a corporate lawyer on Wal-Mart's board, that did it for me.  I don't trust anyone who's sat on Wal-Mart's executive board.

Look sweetie, I don't hate her.  I lived in NYC when she first ran for the Senate -- donated money once, voted for her first run (moved during the 2nd run), etc.

Now, flip side -- should I start calling you a white supremacist for not supporting Obama?  Give me a break.
