Sounds worse than anything in Mississippi now doesn't it? And remember, this is the second largest city in Europe, after Istanbul then London.

Well, the courts there just sentenced an anti-Putin punk band to 2 years in prison for peacefully demonstrating.  The Russians do always look so pissed and mean, and like they could snap your neck and not think twice.

Russians are very conservative, especially the current politicians, and not being democratic doesn't help. I've never seen so many Neo-Nazis anywhere else than in Moscow, you saw people with swastikas tattooed on their arms in the metro, it was crazy. And quite ironic, considering they were the ones who brought down the Nazi regime.

Around 2005, I knew this Vietnamese guy who said he was bady bashed up by a Neo-Nazi gang on a Moscow metro and people just looked on.

PS- You see the Swastika all over India/Nepal in Hindu/Buddhist temples and homes, it's decorative symbol. The Nazis took it from India as a symbol of Aryan superiority (based on the Aryan Invasion Theory of India among other racist theories:  which remains very controversial on the subcontinent even today) and thoroughly distorted it.

Yes, it seems that Russians blame foreign influences for the fall of the Soviet Union (and the dire situation of the country in the 1990s). So there's a lot of racism, even towards people from former Soviet republics. And homosexuality falls in the category of foreign influence.

No wonder their response to HIV has been a disaster.

The HIV situation in Russia is indeed terrible. There are more than 1 million infected people there, and it grows worse by the day.

Russia has traditionally had amongst the nastiest governments (or more specifically crime families) throughout the history of that country.  From extraordinarily brutal czarist regimes that almost always had the most evil and uncompromising leaders through communism and the freedoms deprived to so many.

I think during a period under one czar they had a plentiful crop and enough people got to eat to make life seem somewhat bearable.  During the communist days of the 1950's and '60's when they were first into space life was decent for a higher percentage of people but when communism was played out in the world economy they again lagged behind and life became unbearable again.

I often think how thankful I am now in life that my grandparents on my father's side left Russia in the late 1800's.  My mother always said her in-laws were the sweetest, kindest souls.  But it is a nation of hard scrabbled folks for the most part I would say.
