Spell Check
« on: May 24, 2011, 08:52:37 am »
Is there an issue with the spell check feature lately?  Not sure if it's a technical issue or something I've done wrong.  I need that feature because of my vision issues and my fear of the grammar police.

Who cares about your spelling.  Most people here are English is their second or third language.  But if you care, you can cut and paste your post to the Word doc and bring it back to the posting screen here after doing the spell check.   :-\

if you use IE you can get an add-in called IESpell http://www.iespell.com/download.php

or if you're like me and write long replies sometimes (LOL) or you like to think about your reply and end up timing-out, using metekrop's suggestion to compose offline will not only give you a spellcheck option but save you from losing a post to wherever it is that lost typing disappears to. LOL

oh, and by the way, I still see the spellcheck button when I'm posting here, and it works as good as it usually does (even though it doesn't like so many of the words we type here). Is the "spellcheck" button missing for you? or does it just not work properly?

Really?  ::)  That explains Philicia's blatant murdering of the English language.  Shakespeare is spinning in his grave

I have the button, but as of yesterday, it doesn't do anything when I click it.  I'm wondering if I inadvertently did something to stop that spell check window to open.  If no one else is having the problem, I must have screwed something I shouldn't have.....Again!

Edited to add;  it just worked this time and I swear no weed or wine was involved. :)

Really?
going a bit off-topic, that would be an interesting stat to know - how many members are from what countries?

I would imagine out of the current 13,600, the majority are from the US, followed by England and then either Australia or perhaps Canada (??). (although third place could be something different as we have 2 Spanish language forums) So actually, I would wager good money that English is the first language (and maybe only language - butchered or not LOL) of the vast majority of members, and not a 2nd or 3rd option at all.

well, spellcheck does open in a pop-up window so it is possible to have temporarily disabled pop-ups or something and stopped spellcheck that way. Glad it's working for you though. ;)

Well, I guess we would need to differentiate between "active members" and members who sign up just to ask a question (or 768 of them until they get banned) in the Am I Infected? forum.  The second group tends to have a good number of people from many countries.  The first group is what would matter, and I would venture to say 95% of these members come from the three or four countries that you mentioned (with some expats such as Mecha and others).  I'm sure that Ann could provide us with some good statistics.

You guys gotta get off IE. Firefox has a built in spell check that lets you right click to choose the correct word. If you have firefox you just have to download the dictionary you want to use in the add on menu and the spell check works on anything you type on any web page.

As long as there is no subject verb disagreement.... spelling errors are easily forgiven.  Dangling participles are ok too!

Wow, I really like that spell check.  I've already used in on a couple of other sites.  And now, wolfter is actually a word.  I can also add all my hillbilly isms as I use them.

As far as dangling?  I prefer rock solid salutations more.

edited to add:  wanted to see if reckon is actually a word.  Yep, it sure is.

No problem with spell check, but have noticed problem and wonder if any of you have, too.  When I get to the bottom of the text window here, which is easy to do especially when quoting someone, the cursor will jump up and down--back to earlier parts of the post.  It won't stay where I'm typing.  So, I can't see what I'm typing.  I have to just wing it and then use the arrow button to make sure what I wrote came out right.  Normally, of course, when you fill up the initial text field, it should just continue on down as you type.  I'm not sure why it is doing this.

Is it just me, or anyone else experiencing this?  I have not experienced this with any other site.

you are using IE and you need to click the compatability button, which is the icon by the address bar that looks like a ripped in half page of paper ;)

You're the man!  That fixed it.  I've been going nuts over it, but thought it must be my computer, since no one else was complaining.  I really need to learn me some more bout this here typin machines.  In 3rd grade and really though highschool, I was very knowledgable about computers.  However, those were the Apple 2e's and Macintosh's.  The internets were just getting going at the point I graduated highschool.  I know how to work most programs; it's just the technical stuff that gives me trouble.  And, this was a very simple fix, but I never paid attention to that icon next to the address bar.

Thanks!

On the subject of Spell Check -

A couple of days ago I posted in the report technical problems area that one of the banner ads at the top of the Forums page advertising the National HIV Conference word "Conference" misspelled.

I would have thought that it would have been fixed by now as it is pretty obvious when one looks at it.

While it may not seem like a big deal, if I was a company thinking about placing an ad on the site - I would think twice after seeing a bold, blatant misspelling in a prominently placed banner ad - and the fact that it has been there for numerous days.  Companies are big on image - what type of image is projected for them and/or the site when large (and small) ads are posted and remain posted with no correction to these types of errors.

Just venting - at the same time I wouldn't want to see future businesses who may consider advertising (and thus supporting this site) driven away by an easily corrected error.
