Another really scared person - ex had sex in rehab hospital
« on: September 25, 2006, 08:40:45 pm »
I just broke up with someone that I was with for 3 months. He's an addict (pills and alcohol, but never needles) and a terrible liar and manipulator. I asked him to get tested before we became intimate, but he always put it off, then he said he got tested but they lost the results. So now I'm terrified that maybe he knows he's HIV+ and he tried to hide it from me. We never used protection. He was in a mental hospital/rehab center for several months last year and he admitted that he had unprotected sex with a woman in there that he wasn't "sure about", so he got tested in December but "can't find the papers". If the woman he had sex with used needles, she would be a high risk for HIV, right? If he had sex with her a few times, what is the risk of him getting HIV from her, assuming she had it? And then what would be the risk of him transmitting it to me? There are a lot of IF's that probably water down the risk, but I'm terrified just the same. I just got tested today, but the girls at the clinic said that a negative result isn't accurate for A YEAR! Is that true?

No, she wasn't correct about the waiting time. The CDC, which is conservative in such matters recommends testing at 13 weeks past the most recent unprotected incident.

Testing at that point will give you a reliable result.

And from here on in no matter whom you are with the guy needs to be wearing a condom everytime you have intercourse. No exceptions.

Good luck with your test.

First of all, don't put the blame on him. You put your self at risk. Woman to man transmission is a lot lower than man to man. Now that you have had a risk you need to be tested. Test 13 weeks past last possible unprotected exposure. Now if blowjobs are all you are worried about, then you didn't have a risk. You can prevent contracting HIV by always using condoms.
