resistance test question...
« on: July 15, 2012, 11:08:45 am »
Ok, so i am at the stage of waiting for my resistance test results back and being a natural worrier I am nervous and fearing bad news. Can anyone tell me if it is possible/ likely that a strain of the virus can be resistant to all forms of treatment leaving no option of meds at all? My doctor told me not to worry about that but didnt give a specific answer

thanks, chris.

Chris, the chances of you being resistant to every single drug in all five classes of meds currently available are slim to none. You'd have a better chance of winning the lottery while never buying any lottery tickets.

Even if you are resistant to one or two drugs, you still will have plenty of options available to you. Relax.

You are far more likely to not have any resistance issues than you are to have any, so just hang tight until you get the results in.

To give you some comforting news, take a look here: http://hivdb.stanford.edu/surveillance/map/

You can see that the studies done shows that there is very little "built in" resistance in the HIV found in South East Asia. One explanation could be the limited use of ARV in this region.

I second what Ann said but there is a bigger chance to pick up a resistant strain if you were infected in the first world, lets say Europe or the US.

Hope this helps to settle your nerves. I was also infected in South East Asia so you are not alone :)

Thanks alot guys, yeah that does help settle my nerves. I guess the first stages of being poz are the most confusing and the scariest, really glad I found these forums, they have been a huge help.

Ann I always wondered how resistance works. My doctor said its usually when a poz person is not taking his/her meds properly (like skipping doses or something) and then the VL starts building up and the virus becomes stronger because of that. So when that person infects you he/she's already passing to you a strain that is resistant to the meds he was taking. Is that it?

Yeah, doctors in India (South Asia) don't even prescribe a resistance test for this reason. They just assume it's going to be the wild type. You've to insist to have it done, which means you've to pay yourself.

All the best with your test Wanderer. I'm sure it'll be sensitive to all classes of drugs.
