Thinning hair (and other problems).........
« on: November 01, 2007, 10:10:37 pm »
For the past month, my hair has been getting very thin.  I'm not sure if this is a result of being + for so many years, the meds, or just plain aging.  In other news..........  I started running a fever yesterday and blowing and coughing up all sorts of nasty shit.  Then during the night, I started puking.  Went to the doc's today.  He told me I have a sinus infection, bronchitis and a touch of the stomach flu.  He gave me a prescription for antibiotics and asked me if I wanted him to prescribe a cough medicine, which I said "no" to.  For some reason, those types of meds make my heart pound.  Anyway, has anyone else noticed their hair thinning?

Hey babe,

Have you had your scalp examined for fungal infections? These can often cause alopecia in poz bodz.

Thanks for the advice Damned One.  I'm guessing I would see a dermatologist for this?  You know dearie, both my parents' hair thinned when they got older.  I wonder if it's just being over 40.  I will, however, take your advice under advisement and try to get into see a derm soon.

A dermatologist would be able to do it, but checking for a fungal infection of the scalp should be something any doctor can do.

Some kinds of alopecia are certainly inherited (male pattern baldness comes to mind) but women can be affected too. There can be a whole range of things which can cause/exacerbate hair loss in males and females, including certain medications.

Well, as for meds, I'm on Sustiva, Trizivir, BactrimDS, insulin, Neurontin, Motrin, and some other random ones.  I'll make another appointment with my doc or something next week.  Thanks my dear Damned friend.

I'm on thyroid medicine for underactive thyroid.  I do bleach my hair once a month (no, I'm not natural).  Maybe that would be another possibility.  I just don't want the grey to show right now and I'm not particularly happy with the natural color of my hair.  Ah, vanity........

I started with thinning hair before I knew I was poz.  When I found out and asked my doctor about it she said that it can happen if your numbers fall low.  When I realized I was losing hair, it was right before I was diagnosed and I had a cd4 of 52.  I see you are on bactrum.  Are your numbers low?  That can be a cause.

Well as a mature woman of 51 I hate to tell you this, but once you reach your 40s things either fall out or fall south!  I don't know if you dye your hair, but I did since my late 20s (I went grey early) but in my 40s my scalp hated all dyes so I stopped and since then my hair has got a bit thicker and in better health. I now love my grey hair and women even come up to me in the supermarket and tell me they love it!  I'll post a picture one day and you can judge for yourself!! We do loose a lot of hairs quite naturally and I don't know if you have noticed any bald spots, but if you haven't, then it probably is just an age thing (sorry!).  Anyway, its always better to get it checked out.  Things are bad enough for the older woman without going bald!

Hope your general health has improved and you are feeling a lot better now.

Take care.
Hugs

Did someone say hair loss?

Since you've already had good advice, I'll just add, "Bald is beautiful."

I know it's tougher on women to go bald or thin hair.  When I visit my parent's in their retirement village lots of the women have pretty thin hair.

When I had long hair in the 70s in college I came home and my mother didn't like it, but noticed that my front area was receding, I didn't believe her. A few years later I went to a crew cut because it was so thin and my str8 friends and clients would say "I didn't know you were gay" Just from a crew cut in 79. I had that look up until 18 months ago when I had scalp surgery for skin cancer, but I still had that little dark peach fuzz on top with scars. Now I"ve had to go thru radiation on top and it all fell out, with just the sides growing. I'm still not used to the look of NO hair on top.

For lots of mature women I really like the short hair look. Hope you get some good help or a great new look.

Well, I'm going to be calling my doc today because of coughing up hairballs and developing what I believe is a yeast infection, so I'll just add the pressing question of hair loss when I see him.  When my mum (RIP) was going through chemo for her lung cancer, she lost all her hair and wore a turban.  Which actually looked quite stylish.

Thanks for the feedback people.
