After reading most of the responses in the CSI: NY forum I have come to a couple of conclusions. Either only the idiots found there way here OR we have done a piss poor job of educating the masses on the English language as a whole.
I dont mind the occaisional LOOSE when it should be spelled LOSE. Or some of the internet slang that goes around but the wanton (<- great example, I had to look it up to make sure it was right) destruction of entire paragraphs and the blatant lack of intelligence is SHOCKING and frankly difficult to stomach!
I'm not perfect and I am NOT saying I don't make mistakes but JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ.
AC OUT.

liek OMG, im sooooooooo srsly w/ u on this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ps, i totally luv stella! PLZ dont give her teh aids!!!! shes such a goooood persun!

And whats sad is that people who actually care about English....are usually abused, insulted and belittled when they try to correct someone.
-
One of the greatest mysteries of American culture to me is the strong distrust of intellect here.
As long as schools pride their football team's averages more than the quality of their libraries, such will be the case. But this is hardly a new complaint. Being an "egghead" was a tired cliche at the dawn of the 20th century, and intellectual pursuits have never been "cool".

I used to get irritated about grammatical and spelling errors on forums. I gave up. It's a sure-fire way to start a flame war.
-
Let me apologise now for my past and future mistakes. As someone who is only a high school grad and its been a long, long time since I was in school, I know I make mistakes when posting. I just hope you will kindly overlook them and not be too harsh with me.
Hugs

Teresa honey
I wouldnt worry about it...I , like Puck, have basically given up. Besides I dont type vey well and make a lot of errors simply because I am typing.
-
It's not just English speakers that do this.
I don't mind having people correct me...however, it does come off as snooty when someone does it way too much. There is a point where you just let it go and chill out.

[SARCASM]Umm... OK... I don't even know where to begin here... where's the puncutation? The capitalized I's? And I'm not gonna even begin to go into the run-on sentences...[/SARCASM]

I blame SMS text messaging.

hey alan....
rock out, with your cock out!!!!!
lol.. I know you know what i mean!

I generally over look the common mistakes in posts that everyone including *I* make. Its when the ENTIRE post is difficult to follow because of the grammar and misspellings and what not.
Everyone has typos and lots of us mistakenly spell things incorrectly. Thats not what I was ranting on and it never makes me feel superior. I hold it against NONE of you that I am so intelligent and you are not! [SARCASM]
you all know me by now, it was just a rant. But seriously, are they retarded over there?
-
Spot on, Philly.
The sms curse is also spilling over into oral communication. I cringe when I hear anyone say, 'I just texted you'.

Try hearing, "Why didn't you Myspace me?"
Myspace has become a verb as well.

You think that's bad... I heard a Russian a couple days ago transform "MySpace" into a verb in Russian. It came out "Majspejsovat' ".... I spent the next few minutes conjugating that in my head.
Hmm майспэйсовать ... it even looks funny in Russian.

Je myspace
Tu myspaces
Il/elle/on myspace
Nous myspaçons
Vous myspacez
Ils/elles myspacent.
Interesting.

I worried about this once but not anymore. I type with 1 finger on my right hand and my vision isn't perfect so I'm just happy to be here participating as much as I can.

i dont use spell check cause it makes me feel stupeded than i am. PLUS, the old timers know sspell check was not a feature. also, i safe gaurd myself by never initiating blogs that extend one paragraph. breveity speaks volumes.

But I used a cedilla for the "nous" and everything... poop.

I have often been embarrassed by my writing skills. I totally slaughter the written English language with regards to present/past tense verbs. It was actually the one area of the CLAST that I failed. The CLAST is the College Level Academic Skills Test in the State of Florida and is a mandated test that all undergraduate students are required to satisfy by graduation.
I could not type a lick when I first came to the forums. Now I have mastered the 4 finger punch as I call it. I no longer have to look at the keyboard. ::)
My college is ranked 1,243 in the top colleges in the nation. I admit I made the number up, but only due to laziness. I think I might be off by only a 100 give or take.
I think it is awesome to point out the weakness of others (sarcasm). Your (haha) no better for it... :-*

Well color me SHOCKED that this thread is still up here at the top. When I posted it I thought about 10 of you would look at it and I'd get about 5 comments.

I probably should just move on -- but I can't seem to do it right now, so......
Perhaps all these folks who have bad grammar, spelling and punctuation skills should just look elsewhere for the HIV support that they need.
Why do these forums exist again -- perhaps I missed something.
Just saying.....

I'd like to add my 2 cents here:
Bear60 said: And whats sad is that people who actually care about English....are usually abused, insulted and belittled when they try to correct someone.
It is rude to correct someone in a public forum (be it electronic, or in person). So I believe
the "corrector" gets insulted for being rude, not for caring about grammar. If you were
listening to someone who is giving a speech, would you bring up their grammatical errors
in the public Q&A session that followed?
If you feel the need to correct someone, do it privately (e.g. send them an email, or if in
person, pull them aside). If you don't feel comfortable correcting them "one-on-one",
then don't correct them publicly.
Bucko said: One of the greatest mysteries of American culture to me is the strong distrust of intellect here.
To some extent, I think this is in our history. You could probably trace this all the way back to American Revolution, and breaking away from the English monarchy. Mark Twain was popular in the US, at least in part due to his subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) railing against "conventional" intellectuals.
That said, I agree that too much emphasis is placed on students' football scores instead of their
English test scores here in the US.

Henry

Joemutt. Excellent point. And thats why I added the last line. I am still SHOCKED to find this at the top of the board. Really im not commenting about the ticky tack type shit that everyone does. It's the ones where the ENTIRE post is just butchered. I understand we have a lot of folks from other countries here but in the CSI forum? Thats all USA I would think.
Anyway, you people should know not to take me THAT seriously.

Bad grammer makes my head hurt, especially when it comes from the news "readers" on CNN. That just grates my last gay nerve.
AC. Haven't you been paying attention for the last 20 years? Geeez, the United States is the most poorly educated country on the planet! In Kenya, you are allowed to use Swahilli for the first three grades as you learn english, after that all classes are in english and if you don't learn it, you have to stay in the third grade until you do. Needless to say this causes some grief for the American tourists who fret about the unequivically correct english that the Kenyan natives speak, but are difficult to understand because the American tourists don't understand good english. Oh yes, English was instituted at the national language of Kenya in, oh,, 1963...
Needless to say, you have voiced here what I have felt for years.
Thanks Love.

Well you bring up a WHOLE NEW POINT! Bad grammar when I read news articles is like fingernails on a chalkboard!!! OMG these people write for a LIVING. Just fucking spellcheck your shit! And proofread it.
-
One thing I have not seen here (forum) is when people choose to write in all caps. Good lord! Very hard to read.
Using caps to emphasize is OK, but just ALL CAPS KEYS is pathetic. I find it easier to read all small case lettering than to read
it's opposite. Of course, there is always getting it proper. For the longest time I use to type the word, "Ofcourse." I was shocked when I couldn't find it in the dictionary. :)
(edited --> forgot to do a spellcheck)
-
If I am not mistaken, "of course" is actually a shortening of the phrase "as a matter of course", but then I didn't do college so I wouldn't know for sure. Seems like I remember that one from english class, 9th grade. It seems like Americans have been shortening the "Queens' English" since the Boston tea party.
Love.

I like to read a well-written post as much as anyone, but I have to say this thread has made me very uncomfortable. After all, this is a support forum first and foremost and I'm afraid people who don't have a lot of skill with the written word will be too frightened of being judged to post much after reading this thread.
I see it more as a failing of the schools than a failing of the individual. Of course, sometimes it's just plain laziness, but not always.
One point that has been brought up a few times in this thread is the way our language is changing - for example verbs being made out of nouns like text. The thing is, language is a fluid and dynamic medium and we will never be able to stop it changing. English itself is a blending of quite a few different languages, such as Latin, Greek and French, with various Germanic languages thrown in as well as Celtic and Sanskrit. I'm the proud owner of several etymological dictionaries... I just love the subject!

Ann that was NOT my intention at all. It was SOLELY regarding the CSI: NY forum. That is it. I never criticize those of us who post here for support nor would I. The CSI forum was different, to me it represented "main stream" America, and it was frightening to say the least.
Im sorry this post got out of hand as it was NOT my intention.
If you are just looking at this post and havent posted yet, never fear, your ideas will be heard and the support you seek is here. Pay no attention to me.
