Alcohol and meds
« on: April 16, 2013, 06:00:01 pm »
Ok I'm 22 and I like to go out with my friends from time to time of course I'm going to slow down because of my diagnosis and I know that drinking an abundance of alcohol is not the healthiest thing in the world. BUT do I have to stop altogether? Like I'm naturally a shy person so alcohol can get me to be the me I am around my friends. I start my atripla tonight and I just wanted to know if going all out like once a month is a really really bad thing. And if it isn't is there a certain amount of alcohol that I should limit myself to and how do I still take my meds but drink the alcohol on the same day

No, you don't have to stop drinking alcohol altogether.

No.

I have a couple Margaritas a week, and sometimes I've been known to take my meds with a beer.

Moderation is the key.  ;)

As Moderator Ann is wont to say - all things in moderation, including moderation!

If you're a seriously heavy drinker (more than three drinks a day) you might want to talk honestly about that with your doctor. S/he might swap your regimen for one that's more gentle on the liver. But we're talking long term hard drinking there, not the occasional party.

Na, you're cool.  I get down, often, on the weekend  and my numbers keep getting better.  Obviously if you're not seeing the results you want to see- I would slow your roll.

Also, just FYI, all substances are not good for your liver.  You're already taking one drug every day that your liver is working to clean out, alcohol is just another drug your liver is working to clean.  Make sure you give your liver a rest or risk liver problems.

Thank you! I've cut down how much I drink when I go out usually it's just two cups then I'm good to go...when I'm planning going out should I just take the med a little earlier than normal?

Na, you should definitely take it at the same time every day.  It's a forgiving drug, but that's at least the goal.

I used to to drink really heavily, like 6+ drinks 5 or more nights a week before my diagnosis. I have by no means quit drinking, but now i generally only really drink one night a week. This is more due to just trying to live a healthier life in general, work out more, and focus more on the things that really make me happy. i think a positive diagnosis can be a good wake up call for some people, certainly was for me!

i have noticed that now when i do drink like i used to my hangovers are EPIC. This is most likely due to my body not being used to the hard partying any more and not HIV related. When i first started taking my meds, i would get really nauseous after one or two drinks, but thats totally gone now and im back to drinking straight whiskey again.

so, take it easy if you feel like it but you should be fine. cheers!

Being 23, I wondered the same thing when I started my meds. I've been on Atripla for a month and probably have gone out and really drank twice, I've found no adverse side effects so far. Just take it slow the first time to see how your body reacts. Happy drinking  8)

That last part bears repeating. Unlike many other drugs, you really do need to take your anti-retroviral pill(s) at around the same time to keep the little bastard inside you fully suppressed and unable to mutate.

Left alone, HIV makes billions of copies of itself each day, but it's not actually very good at it and has no correction mechanism. Each of those incorrectly replicated virions is a potential drug-resistant mutation – resistant to your (and our) drugs. For your own long-term health (and everyone else's) you want to keep a steady supply of anti-retrovirals in your body to keep replication (and mutation) down to a minimum.

Just drink in moderation socially and you will be fine.

If I go out on Saturday night I will have 4 drinks over 4 or 5 hours.  I used to drink when I had a friend who I used to have dinner with twice a month, wine with dinner and a stronger drink watching a movie.

I'm not a big drinker, haven't been drunk in over 20 years and can easily go a month without a drink if I don't go out.
Pray God you can cope
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.

1.  Tell your doctor how much you drink so they can monitor your blood work to make sure your liver is healthy.

2.  Make sure your Hep A/B vaccines are up to date.

3.  When you are drinking/partying either take your medication before you go out or set up a system to remind you to take them.  The problem with drinking or partying is that when you are drunk or high its easy to forget/pass out/do something other than taking your meds.  Missed doses = bad.

Do you mean The Learning Channel, or Tender Loving Care?

In my first week with Atripla, I had one incredible dream. Unfortunately, no more. Had issues with sleeping, so I now fly with butterflies, Lunesta.

I've noticed that I generally get sick(er) if I mix too many drinks  and HIV meds. Beyond a point it really isn't worth puking at 4 am and you learn to regulate.
