Fish Oil Pill and Atripla
« on: December 26, 2010, 07:48:25 pm »
Has anyone heard of any interactions between taking a fish oil pill and taking Atripla?  I take the Atripla before bed and usually take a fish oil pill at the same time.  I notice an increase in side effects when I take the fish oil pill at the same time as the atripla.

Hi,

I don't take Atripla, so I can't comment on whether fish oil may increase side effects when taken at the  same time.

However,  Why not try taking your fish oil at another time.  I take mine with food, usually at dinner.

The reason I take them at night before bed is because if I take them during the day I end up burping fish and it grosses me out.

Hello Bug..

There are several fish oil/Omega-3 products on the market that don't cause that fishy after taste or burping fish problem. Your local health food store can probably direct you towards them. The two I use are: Eskimo-3 Double Strength 1000mg and also Fisol from Nature Way. Both are mercury free and free of PCB's.  Fish Oil products that are better absorbed and coated so not to be broken down immediately in the stomach but dissolved in the small intestine probably won't cause that fishy after taste.

I take Omega-3's everyday with breakfast and Atripla at night. Best of luck to you.

I take that prescription fish oil Lovaza.  I wasn't going to fill it but then I found on the Lovaza website you can order a card to get up to $20/mo off any copay.  So I only pay $10/mo for it and it has no aftertaste nor do I have any problems belching.  Whether it has any good benefits remain to be seen.  I am trying to get my HDL up.

Hi,
Atripla contains Efavirenz.  Taking fatty food (chocolate, cheese, fish oil etc) near to the time you take Efavirenz causes increased absorption of the drug and therefore more severe side effects.  Try taking your fish oil earlier or in the morning.

I never had a problem.  I actually started taking my fish oil after dinner only because my son was doing it and it was a way that would remember it but I have taken them together and never had a problem.  If it does not cause worse side effects then i would not worry about it

The link to Thebody, that I provided earlier to  the OP has changed.  For the sake of confusion,  I reposted the updated link again,  in case anyone is interested:

http://www.thebody.com/Forums/AIDS/SideEffects/Q198924.html

"Due to the fat content (fatty meals increase Sustiva levels and risk for side effects) of fish oil I would generally recommend taking fish oil capsules at a different time than the Sustiva (such as at breakfast or dinner/6PM). KH
