Doubt about infection
« on: June 26, 2013, 01:29:28 pm »
My partner is HIV+ and we have regular sex in which I always top and we always use condoms. What I wanted to know is what should happen for me to get infected if, for example, the condom broke. I am not sure if there is no risk if I have no injury in my penis or if simple contact between his blood and my semen is dangerous. Thanks for your help.

Hi Fred , there are many factors that factor into the risk of having unprotected sex with a HIV positive individual , I can offer that if you and your partner have a mutually secure monogamous relationship where you are both STD free and your partner is undetectable you may then can weigh the pro's and cons of unprotected sex . I'm not venturing into giving odds .

To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Hi Jeff, thanks for your answer. I wanted to clarify that I'm in no way considering having unprotected sex. I was just curious as to why an infection may take place.

I understand your question better now and my apologies for misunderstanding you . I will remove the question I quoted so that you still have the same amount of follow-up questions if need be .

Infections although rare do occur when condoms fail sometime but I have not personally seen a person test positive for a brief insertion after a condom break , so it would low risk , not no risk .

As long as you use condoms consistently and correctly for vaginal and anal sex you will avoid exposure .

Thanks Jeff. I was expecting that answer, I know the only risky activities are unprotected anal/vaginal sex, but sometimes getting paranoid is difficult to avoid.

Fred, properly used latex condoms really do provide very effective protection against HIV transmission. It maybe of reassurance to you to know that longterm studies have been conducted of both gay and straight discordant couples. There was lots of mutual unprotected oral sex and only protected anal and vaginal intercourse. The results were that none of the sero-negative partners became infected.

In addition, if your partner is on HIV meds, then his reduced viral load makes it even less likely that he will transmit the virus to you. Your being the top even further reduces the potential risk to you of transmission.

Keep on enjoying yourselves and always using condoms.
